Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange tales from a Russian Occultist The late nineteenth century saw a rise in the number of people who became interested in the occult and among them were a few who became notable practitioners. Aleister Crowley, for example, became infamous as a member of 'the Golden Dawn' and founder of the religion 'Thelema', and the author of this book, Russian born, Madam Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, became a proponent of Theosophy-a religion of archaic wisdom. Her most famous written work on the subject is 'The Secret Doctrine'. Fortunately, for enthusiasts of the other worldly and supernatural fiction, Blavatsky utilised her more earnest pursuits to provide inspiration and background for some highly entertaining tales of ghosts, horrors and weird occurrences. Her single small volume of supernatural fiction, 'Nightmare Tales', was published in 1892, but there remained a small number of uncollected stories published in magazines of the day. This Leonaur original collects all of these short stories as well as a chapter from her book, 'From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan', which has in the past been included in anthologies of supernatural tales, to create the most complete collection of Madam Blavatsky's fiction ever published. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: This selection of short stories from H. P. Blavatsky are superb examples of her talents at writing mystery fiction, inspired by enormous knowledge of the mystical and arcane. Often, Blavatsky's stories are presented as correspondences or reports by or between interested observers into strange or supernatural happenings. Typically, the tales recount events in remote, faraway lands, their tellers having experienced contact with otherworldly forces or bizarre, unexplained entities. Several begin in an intriguing manner, capturing the reader's interest as circumstances inevitably ratchet farther and farther up into something more chillingly weird, or outright nightmarish. Spending her lifetime investigating all manner of spiritual beliefs and the ancient mysteries behind the religions of Egypt and Asia, Helena Blavatsky translated this ample material, introducing much ancient, forgotten lore to new audiences.

Book excerpt: The unifying factor of this collection is, that without exception, every author included here was in some way or another involved with or interested in the occult. In some cases, they were members of an occult organization, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Theosophical Society or similar such groups. Others simply had a strong personal interest in the subject matter or practiced some form of the esoteric sciences in private, their interests having been preserved through diary entries and letters to their peers or documented by the publishing legacy they left behind. The co-mingling of fiction and non-fiction is very much how this written material would have been published at the time. Writers include Manly P. Hall, Aleister Crowley, Algernon Blackwood, Helena P. Blavatsky, Arthur Machen, Franz Hartmann, Lafcadio Hearn, Lord Dunsany, C. W. Leadbeater, William Q. Judge, H. W. Percival and Richard Garnett.

Book excerpt: "It was a dark, chilly night in September, 1884. A heavy gloom had descended over the streets of A., a small town on the Rhine, and was hanging like a black funeral-pall over the dull factory burgh. The greater number of its inhabitants, wearied by their long day's work, had hours before retired to stretch their tired limbs, and lay their aching heads upon their pillows. All was quiet in the large house; all was quiet in the deserted streets.I too was lying in my bed; alas, not one of rest, but of pain and sickness, to which I had been confined for some days. So still was everything in the house, that, as Longfellow has it, its stillness seemed almost audible. I could plainly hear the murmur of the blood, as it rushed through my aching body, producing that monotonous singing so familiar to one who lends a watchful ear to silence. I had listened to it until, in my nervous imagination, it had grown into the sound of a distant cataract, the fall of mighty waters ... when, suddenly changing its character, the ever growing "singing" merged into other and far more welcome sounds. It was the low, and at first scarce audible, whisper of a human voice. It approached, and gradually strengthening seemed to speak in my very ear. Thus sounds a voice speaking across a blue quiescent lake, in one of those wondrously acoustic gorges of the snow-capped mountains, where the air is so pure that a word pronounced half a mile off seems almost at the elbow. Yes; it was the voice of one whom to know is to reverence; of one, to me, owing to many mystic associations, most dear and holy; a voice familiar for long years and ever welcome: doubly so in hours of mental or physical suffering, for it always brings with it a ray of hope and consolation.."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[...]C.] and yourself for many years.... C. W. L.'s word is final and his seership infallible to you." The quality of this supposed "seership" bears a very close resemblance to a stupid and vulgar hoax. This is clearly shown by Mr. Martyn, who says: -"In 1919 I went to America. Young Van Hook was in New York. He talked freely of C. W. L.'s immorality and about faking the 'lives' of people" (Italics mine.) Mr. Martyn then puts together various pieces of evidence against this man, and tells Mrs. Besant that he finds "staring me in the face the conclusions that Leadbeater is a sex pervert, his mania taking a particular form which I have-though only lately-discovered, is a form well known and quite common in the annals of sex criminology." (Italics mine.) This sex criminal, then, is the creature whom Mrs. Besant has accepted "for many years" as "sole intermediary between" herself and-the Masters of Wisdom!! One almost hesitates to draw the obvious inference; for this is the man whom she has for years held up to and imposed upon their followers as a model of all the virtues-"a saint"-a person "on the threshold of divinity."
