Download or read book Scottish Skalds and Sagamen written by Julian Meldon D'Arcy and published by John Donald. This book was released on 1996 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scottish Skalds and Sagamen explores a previously neglected but important aspect of Scotland's literary history: the influence of Viking culture on modern Scottish literature. The book illustrates, firstly, how the Viking invasions and settlements have made a lasting impact on the history, languages and cultures of Scotland and how, from the very beginning, Scotsmen made a distinct and important contribution to the dissemination of Old Norse culture in Britain and played a significant role in the creation of the notion of a Norse ethos." "Secondly, and more importantly, the book illustrates in detail how a consciousness of this Norse heritage has influenced nine major Scottish writers of this century: Hugh MacDiarmid, Lewis Grassie Gibbon, Neil Gunn, John Buchan, Naomi Mitchison, David Lindsay, Eric Linklater, Edwin Muir and George Mackay Brown, throwing new light on aspects of Scottish identity and literary trends, especially in the period of the Scottish Renaissance 1920-50. Scottish Skalds and Sagamen provides a new and stimulating contribution to the ongoing debate on the nature and sources of modern Scottish identity and Scottish literature." [4ème de couverture].

Download or read book Scottish Life and Society: Bibliography for Scottish ethnology written by Alexander Fenton and published by John Donald. This book was released on 2000 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major project comprises fourteen thematically arranged volumes. The aim of the Compendium is to examine the interlocking strands of history and traditional culture that go into the making of a national identity, in an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of knowledge. By bringing together information from a variety of sources, the Compendium not only provides a digest of topics, but also points towards areas for new investigation. The Compendium concentrates upon the present and the historical period and does not generally deal with prehistory, although for certain themes, such as the development of agriculture and buildings, early evidence is taken into account. Where appropriate, reference is made to foreign parallels and to the influence on Scotland of the cultures of neighbouring peoples. Scottish influence on the world at large is also taken into account, whether in relation to urban or rural, maritime or land-based topics. Material and non-material aspects of history and tradition are considered equally, at all levels of society, indeed oftentimes focusing on the interaction between people of differing social strata

Book excerpt: This study combines theoretical models drawn from folklore studies and anthropology to analyze the construction of cultural identity among the inhabitants of the Orkney Islands off the Northern Coast of Scotland. This work should appeal to scholars interested in anthropology, Scottish history, Scandinavian studies, ethnography, and folklore. by people in everyday interactions) in the process of creating and maintaining cultural identity in relation to the inhabitants of the Orkney Islands off the Northern Coast of Scotland. These narratives serve as the means by which a community negotiates and forms its self-identity and, therefore, provide a suitable window onto this cultural negotiation process. Combining symbolic interpretive theory from anthropology with performance theory from folklore, this analysis illuminates narrative as a cultural tool used to construct various identities, concepts of communality and community. This analysis, being directed towards the Orkney Islands, seeks to understand Orcadian identity in both its own perception of its separateness from mainland Scotland and the way in which it draws heavily on a sense of Scandinavian identity.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth Eurolinguistics volume, which contains the papers given at the 5th International Symposium at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, 2004. It is a continuation of a series on Eurolinguistic publications initiated by the Logos Verlag in 2003. The main aim of the symposium was to explore the effects of language contact and multilingualism in different maritime areas of western and northern Europe: Scandinavia, the Baltic States, the British Isles, The Low Countries, France, Italy, and the Pyrenean Peninsula. The contributions are centered on a wide-range of geohistorical maritime contacts with different spectra of multilingual and minority situations along the coasts and rivers of Maritime Europe. For an adequate and non-traditional subdivision of Europe which is neither national nor political, the articles published here deal with contacts under broader geographical terms such as Eurolinguistics West, Eurolinguistics South and Eurolinguistics North. It contains major water-bound regions belonging to the water-drainage areas of seas, lakes and rivers in the sense of Maritime Eurolinguistics.

Book excerpt: In this book, Dr. Ragnhild Ljosland, from the Centre for Nordic Studies, University of the Highlands and Islands, Orkney, explores the life and writing of this remarkable Orkneywoman who has been overlooked compared to her friends and fellow writers George Mackay Brown and Robert Rendall. Christina Costie often uses Orkney's oral storytelling culture as her vantage point and her writing is a treasure trove for those interested in folklore, old customs and beliefs. At the same time, Christina Costie's strong compassion allowed her to write truly moving poems and stories about Orkney life. Writing mainly in the 1940s and 50s, she embraced the idea of writing in the Norn and Scots amalgam which makes the Orkney dialect unique.
