Book excerpt: The rich and varied epigraphic record of the city of Teos in northern Ionia has been dramatically enriched by recent excavations at the site, conducted since 2010 under the aegis of the University of Ankara. Over the past decade, the number of known inscriptions from Teos has increased from c. 300 to c. 500, and every season's campaign brings significant new finds. The most remarkable document discovered in recent years is a long honorific decree of Abdera for the dēmos of Teos, dating to the mid-160s BC (Chapter 1, Document 1). The new inscription invites a reassessment of the uniquely close relationship between Teos and her daughter-city Abdera over a period of almost four centuries, from the original Teian settlement at Abdera in the 540s BC to the Roman sack of Abdera in 170 BC and its aftermath. We hope that readers will share our excitement in retracing the long shared history of Teos and Abdera, in times of both peace and war

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Athens an imperialistic state, deserving all the reputation for exploitation that adjective can imply, or was the Athenian alliance, even at its most unequal, still characterized by a convergence of interests? The Power of Money explores monetary and metrological policy at Athens as a way of discerning the character of Athenian hegemony in midfifth-century Greece. It begins with the Athenian Coinage Decree, which, after decades of scholarly attention, still presents unresolved questions for Greek historians about content, intent, date, and effect. Was the Decree an act of commercial imperialism or simply the codification of what was already current practice? Figueira interprets the Decree as one in a series concerned with financial matters affecting the Athenian city-state and emerging from the way the collection of tribute functioned in the alliance that we call the Athenian empire. He contends that the Decree served primarily to legislate the status quo ante.

Book excerpt: Polykleitos, the Doryphoros, and Tradition displays an impressive range of approaches, beginning with commentary on the artistic and philosophical antecedents that influenced Polykleitos' own aesthetic, as well as the role of contemporary Greek anatomical knowledge in his representation of the human form. Many of the essays offer extended analysis and detailed illustration of his surviving sculptures, later copies of his work, and reflections of his style in sculpture, paintings, coins, and other art in Greece, Italy, and Asia Minor. Several essays offer an extended discussion of Polykleitos' original bronze Doryphoros, its pose, its relation to other spearbearer sculptures, and the fine Roman marble copy of it now at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies presented in this volume deal with numerous and often undervalued aspects of multilingualism in Ancient Europe and the Mediterranean. Primarily, but not exclusively, they explore the impact of the great transnational languages, Greek and Latin, on numerous indigenous languages: the latter mostly disappeared apart from a number of written texts, often not well comprehensible, but at the same time provided the dominant languages with loanwords, some of them destined to enduring success. Moreover, Greek and Latin were remarkably affected by their mutual contact, with the complication that Greek was notoriously far from monolithic, and in some areas its different dialects intermingled with each other and with the local languages. The case studies of this volume were conducted in the frame of a European HERA research on Multilingualism and Minority Languages in Ancient Europe, which covered a number of very diverse areas, with an emphasis on Sicily and Southern Italy, Illyria, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace, Egypt and Asia Minor (also in medieval and modern times). This book makes indispensable reading for anyone with an interest in multilingualism and language contact in Ancient Europe.

Book excerpt: Feathered with illustrations, a deep dive into the meaning of this half-lion, half-bird creature over millennia of human history. Griffinology is a fascinating exploration of the mythical creature’s many depictions in human culture. Drawing on a wealth of historical and literary sources, this book shows how the griffin has captured the imagination of people for over five thousand years, representing power, transcendence, and even divinity. It explores the history and symbolism of griffins in art, from their appearances in ancient Egyptian magic wands to medieval bestiaries, and from medieval coats of arms to modern corporate logos. The use of the griffin as a symbol of power and protection is surveyed throughout history and into modern times, such as in the Harry Potter series. Beautifully illustrated, this book should appeal to all those interested in monsters, magic, and the mystical, as well as art and history.
