She’s a top agent of the NSA’s clandestine Recovery Enforcement Division, specializing in human trafficking and sex crimes. Her current mission: To infiltrate the inner circle of Boston’s exclusive S&M clubs in order to save young women who are about to be auctioned off to the highest bidders. But Lexi’s only way in is under the control of her new partner in crime, Nick Donovan. Nick will do whatever it takes to bring down the billionaire sex-ring mastermind who’s kidnapped his sister. But the games he must play as Lexi’s dominant are burning away his icy control, and blurring the lines between partners. Meanwhile, their enemies are closing in as they enter a devastating race against time...bringing them dangerously close to a ruthless end. Fractured When an old nemesis resurfaces in New York City, girls from across the globe are recruited for a modeling competition, only to become enslaved prostitutes. It’s up to Lexi Steele, an undercover agent with the NSA’s Recovery Enforcement Division, and her partner, Nick Donovan, to infiltrate the operation and free the victims. Finding the mastermind, who slipped through their hands once before, is only half the challenge. Nick is keeping a shocking secret from his past that’s affecting their mission. Time is running out, and Lexi may be forced to do the unthinkable to see that the job is done. Vendetta Special Agent Lexi Steele, an operative with the NSA’s highly secretive Recovery Enforcement Division, and her partner, Nick Donovan, are on the trail of their nemesis, criminal mastermind Karl Bachmann. Lexi is shocked and furious when her team is ordered to stop their investigation. Why would the government let a vicious criminal who deals in sex trafficking get away? Bachmann is now out for revenge and bent on destroying Lexi. When a family member is kidnapped, it’s a race against time, but they soon find themselves caught in a web of deceit and betrayal that goes to the very core of the U.S. Government. Amid all the turmoil, Lexi fights her emotions for Nick, a distraction she can’t allow. He wants her trust and love—something she might never be able to give.

Book excerpt: "An exquisitely timed book ... Code Red is a worthwhile exploration of the shared goals (and shared enemies) that unite moderates and progressives. But more than that, it is a sharp reminder that the common ground on which Dionne built his career has been badly eroded, with little prospect that it will soon be restored.” —The New York Times Book Review New York Times bestselling author and Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne, Jr. sounds the alarm in Code Red, calling for an alliance between progressives and moderates to seize the moment and restore hope to America’s future for the 2020 presidential election. Will progressives and moderates feud while America burns? Or will these natural allies take advantage of the greatest opportunity since the New Deal Era to strengthen American democracy, foster social justice, and turn back the threats of the Trump Era? The United States stands at a crossroads. Broad and principled opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency has drawn millions of previously disengaged citizens to the public square and to the ballot boxes. This inspired and growing activism for social and political change hasn’t been seen since the days of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies and the Progressive and Civil Rights movements. But if progressives and moderates are unable—and unwilling—to overcome their differences, they could not only enable Trump to prevail again but also squander an occasion for launching a new era of reform. In Code Red, award-winning journalist E. J. Dionne, Jr., calls for a shared commitment to decency and a politics focused on freedom, fairness, and the future, encouraging progressives and moderates to explore common ground and expand the unity that brought about Democrat victories in the 2018 elections. He offers a unifying model for furthering progress with a Politics of Remedy, Dignity, and More: one that solves problems, resolve disputes, and moves forward; that sits at the heart of the demands for justice by both long-marginalized and recently-displaced groups; and that posits a positive future for Americans with more covered by health insurance, more with decent wages, more with good schools, more security from gun violence, more action to roll back climate change. Breaking through the partisan noise and cutting against conventional wisdom to provide a realistic look at political possibilities, Dionne offers a strategy for progressives and moderates to think more clearly and accept the responsibilities that history now imposes on them. Because at this point in our national story, change can’t wait.

Book excerpt: This meticulously documented call-to-action reveals extensive scientific evidence that the global warming crisis is far worse than officially indicated — and that we’re almost at the point of no return. Serious climate-change impacts are already happening: large ice-sheets are disintegrating, sea-level rises will reach 5 metres this century, and we are seeing devastating species loss. It is no longer a case of how much more we can ‘safely’ emit, but whether we can stop emissions and produce a deliberate cooling before the Earth’s climate system reaches a point beyond any hope of human restoration. These imperatives are incompatible with ‘politics as usual’ and ‘business as usual’ — we face a sustainability emergency that urgently requires a clear break from the politics of failure-inducing compromise.

Book excerpt: Even several years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, many organizations are ill-prepared to deal with crises, often opting to deal with them only after the fact. In Code Red in the Boardroom, Tim Coombs argues that crisis management should be a variety of activities that the organization performs daily to prevent crises from occurring. He defines the types of crises an organization might experience (both internal and external), draws from a wide variety of case examples, and showcases cutting-edge techniques that are being tested in the public and private sectors to demonstrate how crisis management can be hardwired into the corporate DNA, so that sensing, preventing, and responding quickly to crises become everyone's responsibility. In the process, he explores evolving roles for executives, managers, and front-line employees in communicating and implementing crisis plans. Ultimately, the book shows readers how proactive crisis management makes the company stronger, more resilient, and adaptable to change. A glossary of key terms and templates for establishing a crisis management program make this book an essential resource for all organizations. Even several years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, many organizations delude themselves about crisis management. Some enterprises, especially smaller ones, still believe that a crisis cannot happen to them. Others have gone through the steps of creating a crisis management plan, but really pay no more than lip service to the program, and may, in fact, be creating a false sense of security that leaves the company even more vulnerable to attack, accident, crime, or other sources of crisis. Tim Coombs argues that crisis management should not just be something you do when a crisis hits. It should be a variety of activities that the organization performs daily to prevent crises from ocurring. In Code Red in the Boardroom, Coombs defines the types of crises an organization might experience (both internal and external), draws from a wide variety of case examples, and showcases cutting-edge techniques that are being tested in the public and private sectors to demonstrate how crisis management can be hardwired into the corporate DNA—so that sensing, preventing, and responding quickly to crises become everyone's responsibility. Book excerpt: Twenty-First-Century Leadership to Fight the Code Red for Business aims to equip a cadre of leaders with the tools they need to stop using fossil fuels for energy, electricity, and transport to reduce their carbon footprint. Inspired by 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari, the book offers an important addition to the canon of literature for leaders who want to cultivate a sustainability mindset. In straightforward prose, the author outlines what’s at stake amid the climate crisis and the social, physical, and economic calamities that will follow if leaders don’t act. The book also highlights three disruptors—technology, geopolitics, and governance—that need strategic action. The four key traits that set apart a twenty-first-century leader include: • an appreciation for mobilizing science as part of business strategy; • an urgent need to make an impact on the code red for business; • a sustainability mindset that prioritizes the planet and people over profit; • a willingness to embed the Twenty-First-Century Board Leadership Model in the business’s agenda. We can either ignore science, as the nineteenth-century-mindset leaders have done by making profit their foremost priority, or become relevant, twenty-first-century, science-led, sustainability-mindset leaders dedicated to saving the planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although health equity and diversity-focussed research has begun to gain momentum, there is still a paucity of research from health geographers that explicitly explores how geographic factors, such as place, space, scale, community, and location, inform multiple axes of difference. Such axes can include residential location, age, sex, gender, race/ethnicity, culture, religion, socio-economic status, marital status, sexual orientation, education level, and immigration status. Specifically focussing on Canada’s rapidly changing society, which is becoming increasingly pluralized and diverse, this book examines the place-health-diversity intersection in this national context. Health geographers are well positioned to offer a valuable contribution to diversity-focussed research because place is inextricably linked to differential experiences of health. For example, access to health care and health promoting services and resources is largely influenced by where one is physically and socially situated within the web of diversity. Furthermore, applying geographic concepts like place, in both the physical and social sense, allows researchers to explore multiple axes of difference simultaneously. Such geographic perspectives, as presented in this book, offer new insights into what makes diverse people, in diverse places, with access to diverse resources (un)healthy in different ways in Canada and beyond.
