Book excerpt: The strategic significance of the Papuan Campaign can be briefly stated. In addition to blunting the Japanese thrust toward Australia and the transpacific line of communications, it put General MacArthur's forces in a favorable position to take the offensive. But this little known campaign is significant for still another reason. It was the battle test of a large hitherto-inexperienced U.S. Army force and its commanders under the conditions which were to attend much of the ground fighting in the Pacific. Costly in casualties and suffering, it taught lessons that the Army had to learn if it was to cope with the Japanese under conditions of tropical warfare. Samuel Milner holds a graduate degree in history from the University of Alberta and has done further graduate work in political science at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he served in Australia and New Guinea as a historian with the Air Transport Command, Army Air Forces. Upon completing Victory in Papua he left the Office of the Chief of Military History to become historian of the Air Weather Service, U.S. Air Force.

Book excerpt: With the Leyte Campaign the War in the Pacific entered a decisive stage. The period of limited offensives, bypassing, and island hopping was virtually over. American troops in greater numbers than ever before assembled in the Pacific Theater, supported by naval and air forces of corresponding size, fought and overcame Japanese forces of greater magnitude than any previously met. Though the spotlight is on the front-line fighting, the reader will find in this volume a faithful description of all arms and services performing their missions. The account is not exclusively an infantry story. It covers as well the support of ground fighting on Leyte by large-scale naval operations and by land-based air power under the most adverse conditions. In addition, careful attention to logistical matters, such as the movement of supplies and the evacuation of the wounded, gives the reader a picture of the less spectacular activities of an army in battle.

Book excerpt: In publishing the history of combat operations the Department of the Army has three objectives. The first is to provide the Army itself with an accurate and timely account of its varied activities in directing, organizing, and employing its forces for the conduct of war-an account which will be available to the service schools and to individual members of the Armed Services who wish to extend their professional reading. The second objective is to offer the thoughtful citizen material for a better understanding of the basic problems of war and the manner in which these problems were met, thus augmenting his understanding of national security. The third objective is to accord a well-earned recognition to the devoted work and grim sacrifices of those who served. "The successes of the South Pacific Force," wrote Admiral Halsey in 1944, "were not the achievements of separate services or individuals but the result of whole-hearted subordination of self-interest by all in order that one successful 'fighting team' could be created."* The history of any South Pacific campaign must deal with this "fighting team," with all United States and Allied services. The victory on Guadalcanal can be understood only by an appreciation of the contribution of each service. No one service won the battle. The most decisive engagement of the campaign was the air and naval Battle of Guadalcanal in mid-November 1942, an engagement in which neither Army nor Marine Corps ground troops took any direct part. This volume attempts to show the contribution of all services to the first victory on the long road to Tokyo.

Coast Guard at War-REG INGRAHAM INTRODUCTION BY SECRETARY OF THE NAVY FRANK KNOX THE BOBBS-MERRILL COMPANY Publishers INDIANAPOLIS NEW YORK 7. S. Coast Guard Flioto WAVES OF MEN AND WAVES OF WATER Waves of men as well as waves of water head for the beach as U. S. Coast Guardsmen drive their landing barges toward a South Pacific island during an intensive invasion drill. Many of the Coast Guardsmen participating in the early-morning drill are veterans of the original Guadalcanal invasion. . B 2 THE BOBBS-MERJULL COMPANY PRINTED NTHE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA First Edition THE CORNWALL PRESS, INC., CORNWALL, N. Y. To Gertrude 1 3 1844 Introduction THE STORY of the Coast Guards role in this war is well known to those of us who have followed the course of the war at sea closely. But those who associate the Coast Guard mainly with its peacetime functions of safeguarding Ameri can lives and property at sea and protecting legitimate ship ping along our coasts and inland waterways might wonder what the activities of the service are in time of war. For those people this book will supply the answer. An operating part of the Navy since the Presidents decla ration of a national emergency in November, 1941, the Coast Guard fought hard and effectively in the Battle of the At lantic. The loss of ships and men suffered in this battle is sad, mute evidence of the force of its fight. More heartening evidence lies at the bottom of the sea in the battered hulls of German U-boats. Again the Coast Guard has been highly valuable in land ing operations. With their traditional knowledge of the handling of small boats in all kinds of surf and under all sorts ofconditions. Coast Guardsmen were with the first Marines that landed in the Solomons and they were an equally essential factor in the success of the Navy task forces that have since effected landings in North Africa, in Sicily, 7 INTRODUCTION in Italy and in the islands of the Pacific. The story of their work in these operations is one that deserves to be told in the permanent form of a book. But there are other things than these things for which the nation at war has been dependent upon the Coast Guard. The security of our all-important ports, the protection of our thousands of miles of coast line, the manning of many of our troop transports, the rescue of mariners at sea, the test ing and regulation of lifesaving equipment aboard our mer chant ships and the maintenance of necessary aids to navi gation all these are functions and responsibilities of the Coast Guard. They are jobs that have to be done and done well, and they are eminently worth reading about. FRANK KNOX. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS So many of the commissioned, enlisted and ci vilian personnel at Coast Guard Headquarters assisted in providing material for this boo that it would not be possible to list them here, but I wish particularly to express my thanks to Captain Ellis Reed-Hill and his staff, notably Warrant Officer Arthur Bernon Tourtellot f without whose friendly and expert co-operation the boo would not have been undertaken. The opportunity to tal with the Coast Guards quiet, capable Commandant, Vice Admiral Russell R. Waesche, and such outstanding cutter captains as Commander James Hirshfield was of inestimable help. I also wish to than Mr. Archibald Ogden for his interest from the start. Contents CHAPTER PAGE I. THE FIRSTBLOW 17 II. THE FIRST FLEET 28 III. THE TURNING POINT 53 IV. COMBAT CUTTERS 90 V. Book excerpt: From the foreword: WHEN JAPAN ATTACKED PEARL HARBOR on December 7, 1941, and Germany and Italy joined Japan four days later in declaring war against the United States, intelligence essential for the Army Air Forces to conduct effective warfare in the European and Pacific theaters did not exist. Piercing the Fog tells the intriguing story of how airmen built intelligence organizations to collect and process information about the enemy and to produce and disseminate intelligence to decisionmakers and warfighters in the bloody, horrific crucible of war. Because the problems confronting and confounding air intelligence officers, planners, and operators fifty years ago still resonate, Piercing the Fog is particularly valuable for intelligence officers, planners, and operators today and for anyone concerned with acquiring and exploiting intelligence for successful air warfare. More than organizational history, this book reveals the indispensable and necessarily secret role intelligence plays in effectively waging war. It examines how World War II was a watershed period for Air Force Intelligence and for the acquisition and use of signals intelligence, photo reconnaissance intelligence, human resources intelligence, and scientific and technical intelligence. Piercing the Fog discusses the development of new sources and methods of intelligence collection; requirements for intelligence at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels of warfare; intelligence to support missions for air superiority, interdiction, strategic bombardment, and air defense; the sharing of intelligence in a coalition and joint service environment; the acquisition of intelligence to assess bomb damage on a target-by-target basis and to measure progress in achieving campaign and war objecti ves; and the ability of military leaders to understand the intentions and capabilities of the enemy and to appreciate the pressures on intelligence officers to sometimes tell commanders what they think the commanders want to hear instead of what the intelligence discloses. The complex problems associated with intelligence to support strategic bombardment in the 1940s will strike some readers as uncannily prescient to global Air Force operations in the 1990s.," Illustrated.
