Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Coal Field, D: Comprising Six Reports on the Resources of Some of the Counties Located in the Western Coal Field It being necessary to publish a new edition of the -reports of the Geological Survey, .it is thought proper to change the arrangement Of the reports in the several volumes. This is advisable in order to bring together in one volume the several reports relating to a given subject or locality. In the first edition (second series) the volumes were made up Of reports, regardless Of subjects treated, and in order to learn all that may be published of a locality, the reader must examine sev eral volumes. For instance, the reports on the iron ores and the iron manufacture Of Greenup, Carter, Boyd, and Lawrence counties is in volume I, and the Report on the Geology of the above named counties is in volume 2. The Chemical Reports and the reports on the Timbers are scattered through four volumes. This arrangement of reports could not have been avoided in the early history Of the Survey without a delay in the publication Of the volumes. It is thought that the arrangement in this, edition will more fully meet the wants of the public, and will render the reports more valuable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blind Brother: A Story of the Pennsylvania Coal Mines Up in the Lackawanna region a strike had been in progress for nearly two weeks. Efforts had been made by the strikers to persuade the miners down the valley to join them, but at first without success. Then a committee of one hundred came down to appeal and to intimidate. In squads of ten or more they visited the mines in the region, and, in the course of their journeyings, had come to the Dryden Slope. They had induced the miners to go out at all the workings they had thus far entered, and were no less successful here. It required persuasion, sometimes threats, sometimes, indeed, even blows, for the miners in Dryden Slope had no cause of complaint against their employers; they earned good wages, and were content. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Cahaba Coal Field To His Excellency, Thomas Seay, Governor of Alabama: Sir: - I have the honor to transmit herewith, a report on the Cahaba Coal Field, by Joseph Squire. In his letter of transmittal, Mr. Squire has given a short account of the manner in which the map was first begun, and has come finally to be published by the survey. From this sketch it will be seen that the map and report are the result of more than thirty years work on the part of Mr. Squire, and, at the very low estimate of $1,500 a year, for the compensation of the geologist and for the making of the tests of the seams, they represent an expenditure of at least $45,000; the cost of the survey has been only about one seventh of that sum; the difference has been given to the state by Mr. Squire and those for whom he made the explorations. I think we should not lose sight of these facts. To make the map more complete as to the parts not occupied by the Cahaba Field, I have added the colors showing the distribution of the Geological Formations in the adjacent valley regions, and have appended to Mr. Squire's report, by way of explanation of these colors, a short account of the lithological and other characters of these different geological formations, together with such other matter as seemed necessary to account for the present attitude and positions of the strata of these formations in the valleys. Book excerpt: When Callie Rushton takes a position as a tutor for a prominent businessman Edward Burke in 1930's Roslyn, she is only wanting to put bread on the table for her struggling family. While she's heard rumors about Mr. Burke's past -as well as his unique connection to the town's African American history of the late 1880's-she doesn't think much of it until she meets Mr. Burke's right hand man, Gabe. Before long Callie finds herself delving into her employer's past, putting her position on the line. "The Emblem" explores love against the odds and is inspired by Roslyn's Black Pioneers, whose legacy lives on.
