Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A San Francisco police detective becomes obsessed with a sculptress’s apparent suicide—and hounds his new wife into helping him solve the case . . . When Officer Charles confronts a man acting erratically early in the morning on a quiet residential street in San Francisco, he presumes it’s a case of public intoxication—until the man blurts out that Mabel Edwards has hanged herself. The sculptress, who’d been working on a menacing-looking Druid statue, is indeed dead. And when the shaken officer briefly leaves the scene, his only witness disappears. When Det. Lt. Stephen Mayhew, on his honeymoon in San Francisco, hears about the death from his old pal Charles, he’s not convinced it was suicide—especially after he hears the nasty comments made by Mabel’s elderly neighbors. To his new bride’s dismay, he’s soon obsessed with his hunch, peppering everyone with questions and asking poor Sara to help him re-create the crime scene. How can she say no? That’s what she gets for marrying a policeman . . . Previously published under the name D.B. Olsen

Book excerpt: A stunning and lyrical debut novel Vincent Appleton smiles at his daughters, raises a gun, and blows off his head. For the Appleton sisters, life had unravelled many times before. This time it explodes. Eight-year-old Hariet, known to all as Ari, is dispatched to Cape Breton and her Aunt Mary, who is purported to eat little girls. But Mary and her partner, Nia, offer an unexpected refuge to Ari and her steadfast companion, Jasper, an imaginary seahorse. Yet the respite does not last, and Ari is torn from her aunts and forced back to her twisted mother and fractured sisters. Her new stepfather, Len, and his family offer hope, but as Ari grows to adore them, sheÍs severed violently from them too, when her mother moves in with the brutal Dick Irwin. Through the sexual revolution and drug culture of the 1960s, Ari struggles with her fatherÍs legacy and her motherÍs addictions, testing limits with substances that numb and men who show her kindness. Ari spins through a chaotic decade of loss and love, the devilish and divine, with wit, tenacity, and the astonishing balance unique to seahorses. The Clay Girl is a beautiful tour de force about a child sculpted by kindness, cruelty, and the extraordinary power of imagination, and her families „ the one sheÍs born in to and the one she creates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition appeared fourteen years ago. Since then there have been significant advances in our science that warrant an updating and revision of Sand and Sandstone. The main framework of the first edition has been retained so that the reader can begin with the mineralogy and textural properties of sands and sandstones, progress through their organization and classification and their study as a body of rock, to consideration of their origin-prove nance, transportation, deposition, and lithification-and finally to their place in the stratigraphic column and the basin. The last decade has seen the rise of facies analysis based on a closer look at the stratigraphic record and the recognition of characteristic bed ding sequences that are the signatures of some geologic process-such as a prograding shallow-water delta or the migration of a point bar on an alluvial floodplain. The environment of sand deposition is more closely determined by its place in such depositional systems than by criteria based on textural characteristics-the "fingerprint" approach. Our revi sion reflects this change in thinking. As in the geological sciences as a whole, the concept of plate tectonics has required a rethinking of our older ideas about the origin and accumu lation of sediments-especially the nature of the sedimentary basins.

Although Clarkl's star is not visible from Earth, Clarkl's advanced technology allows its natives to visit Earth and take Earthlings back to Clarkl for work. In the early 2070s, the American government entered into a contract with the people of Clarkl to manage and staff farms and kitchens to feed some of the large numbers of Clarkl natives who are faced with the planet's ever-present famine. The American government received certain critical minerals from Clarkl, and the Clarklians received the services of farmers and cooks. This novel presents the diaries of five Americans who went to Clarkl for work in the dining rooms. They left troubling problems on Earth to go to Clarkl for a guaranteed monthly income and a decade of hard work. The diaries discuss the ugly Clarkl natives, with all seven sexes described. Three imaginative illustrations by Lance Jackson show these natives. Carmen, Mary THE CLARKL SOUP KITCHENS AuthorHouse (277 pp.) November 2004 ISBN: 1-4184-8031-2 The cold planet of Clarkl, a place of .few comforts and extensive famine,. serves as the backdrop for this humorous, pseudo-allegorical tale.

Book excerpt: Clayton Tucker and his colleagues at the Dallas Observer eagerly prepare to cover the anniversary of the first human heart transplant using a cloned heart. Cloning, stem cell therapy and gene splicing have become nearly routine in 2016 and have opened the door to advances in medicine only dreamed of ten years earlier. Traveling to South Africa where the first heart transplant was done fifty years earlier, Clay discovers that Pontiac Pharmaceuticals has been closely involved in the research surrounding both the original transplant and the one in Dallas. Clay and Brian Singh begin looking into Pontiac and learn that it is part of Omega Security Systems; a multinational arms dealer fronting for a counter espionage organization. However, a power struggle is underway at Pontiac and Clay is contacted by Pontiacs COO Darius Kent. Kent is concerned that an advanced unstable biological weapon is being developed at the companies lab in Bosnia by the companys president, the Colonel. Kent helps Clay and Brian infiltrate the lab using the newly developed counter insurgency macro skin. They pose as two of the companies researchers recently transferred to the lab. Here they are confronted with ultimate biological weapon, the Alastor. Clay and Brian are able to download the Alastor research and escape the lab. Now the two must get back to Dallas with the data intact hopefully in time. The initial field test of the weapon is only days away.

He devotes all of his time to making and keeping friends for the university. I have never met anyone with as much capacity to help Aggies as he has.”—Former Texas A&M President Ray M. Bowen “Bob Walker contributed significantly in creating the culture of stewardship that has helped make Texas A&M one of the nation’s truly great land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant universities.”—Mark A.
