Written in the authors’ unmistakable style, the book transports readers to a different world. The narrative surrounds the theme of time and follows people who live inside a clock. The Clock People is a wondrous work of mechanical engineering and imagineering that runs both like clockwork and anti-clockwork! The story follows the lives of people who live and work inside an antique golden fob watch to the sound of clicking, ticking, tocking, whirling and whirring. The Clock People lost their home, downsizing to another property in Clock Town. But this is just half of the story, the other half is lost in time, waiting to be discovered... The Clock People is Mark Roland Langdale’s fifth Matador children’s book, and will appeal to science fiction and fantasy lovers along with fans of his former books. “What is time? Scientists who believe in quantum wonder tales would have you believe it does not exist, that it is simply an illusion a clever conjuring trick and nothing more...”

Book excerpt: Examining one of the earliest films made specifically for young audiences in US cinema, Rock around the Clock (1956), this book explores the exploitation production company that made the film and the ways it represented young people, especially in terms of their association with rock ’n’ roll music and culture. Providing new avenues of approaching the film, the book looks at how Rock around the Clock has attracted significant scholarly attention, despite its origins as a low-budget production made by master exploitation filmmaker Sam Katzman. It challenges accounts that see the film’s young people as juvenile delinquents, using instead the label ‘cultural rebels’ as a signifier of youth’s ability to resurrect a moribund music industry and rejuvenate a stale youth culture. This book also questions the nature of the label ‘exploitation’ as applied to the film by examining Columbia Pictures’ role as a resource provider for Katzman’s film, comparing Rock around the Clock to contemporaneous films with a youth focus that were produced in different industrial contexts and investigating its relationship to adaptation by asking whether the film is an example of a ‘postliterary’ adaptation. Rich on archival research and industrial and textual analysis, Rock around the Clock will interest both film studies and youth cultures scholars.

Don't read it before bed!" —Sarah Pinborough, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes "Ararat is a rollicking and horrifying adventure...as relentless as it is addictive." —Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts and Disappearance at Devil's Rock New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden’s Ararat is a supernatural thriller about a mountain adventure that quickly turns into a horrific nightmare of biblical proportions. Ararat is the heart-pounding tale of an adventure that goes wrong...on a biblical scale. When an earthquake reveals a secret cave hidden inside Mount Ararat in Turkey, a daring newly engaged couple are determined to be the first ones inside...and what they discover will change everything. The cave is actually a buried ancient ship that many quickly come to believe is Noah’s Ark. When a team of scholars, archaeologists, and filmmakers make it inside the ark, they discover an elaborate coffin in its recesses. Inside the coffin they find something hideous. Shock and fear turn to horror when a massive blizzard blows in, trapping them thousands of meters up the side of a remote mountain. All they can do is pray for safety. But something wicked is listening to their prayers...and it wants to answer.

Book excerpt: An essential work for rock fans and scholars, Before Elvis: The Prehistory of Rock 'n' Roll surveys the origins of rock 'n' roll from the minstrel era to the emergence of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley. Unlike other histories of rock, Before Elvis offers a far broader and deeper analysis of the influences on rock music. Dispelling common misconceptions, it examines rock's origins in hokum songs and big-band boogies as well as Delta blues, detailing the embrace by white artists of African-American styles long before rock 'n' roll appeared. This unique study ranges far and wide, highlighting not only the contributions of obscure but key precursors like Hardrock Gunter and Sam Theard but also the influence of celebrity performers like Gene Autry and Ella Fitzgerald. Too often, rock historians treat the genesis of rock 'n' roll as a bolt from the blue, an overnight revolution provoked by the bland pop music that immediately preceded it and created through the white appropriation of music till then played only by and for black audiences. In Before Elvis, Birnbaum daringly argues a more complicated history of rock's evolution from a heady mix of ragtime, boogie-woogie, swing, country music, mainstream pop, and rhythm-and-blues--a melange that influenced one another along the way, from the absorption of blues and boogies into jazz and pop to the integration of country and Caribbean music into rhythm-and-blues. Written in an easy style, Before Elvis presents a bold argument about rock's origins and required reading for fans and scholars of rock 'n' roll history.
