Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coventry Patmore The chief, and almost the only, public source of information about the facts of Patmore's life is the Memoirs and Correspondence in two volumes, published by Mr. Basil Champneys in 1900. Mr. Champneys, whose work was performed with admirable judgment and sympathy, was supplied with all the necessary documents by Mrs. Patmore, whose "devoted foresight during her husband's life, and indefatigable industry then and later," are cordially acknowledged by the biographer. This large work was not a memoir of Coventry Patmore alone, but of his parents, his wives, his deceased children, and many of his relatives. As a collection of documents, extremely full and authentic, it can never be superseded. The present little volume is intended to supplement the official biography on the critical side. Mr. Champneys dealt with the records of Patmore's life, and of his surroundings. He had little space left in which to consider the works, which, indeed, could scarcely be analysed impartially in a family memoir. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angel in the House by Coventry Patmore There could be but one answer to the suggestion of Mr. Coventry Patmore that his "Angel in the House" might usefully have a place in this "National Library." The suggestion was made with the belief that wide and cheap diffusion would not take from the value of a copyright library edition, while the best use of writing is fulfilled by the spreading of verse dedicated to the sacred love of home. The two parts of the Poem appeared in 1854 and 1856, were afterwards elaborately revised, and have since obtained a permanent place among the Home Books of the English People. Our readers will join, surely, in thanks to the author for the present he has made us. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs and Correspondence of Coventry Patmore, Vol. 1 By far the most interesting of the available docu ments are those relating to Patmore's first courtship and marriage; nor have there been any which have put so severe a strain upon the discretion of his biographer. The charm of these is so great, the light they throw on his own and on his first wife's character so intense, that the temptation to employ them too freely has been strong. A somewhat liberal use of them seems indeed to be both de manded and justified; demanded, because Patmore is best known as the poet of wedded love, and there fore a special interest attaches to records of his affection for the wife who was the chief motive of his verse; justified, for his published work abounds in candid self-expression, never more fully than on this very subject. Indeed the limits he has set are none too strait, and within these his biographer may move in safety; nor do I think that those who know his writing best will accuse me of having vio lated the boundary which he has indicated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS The Children's Garland From The Best Poets: Selected And Arranged By Coventry Patmore This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coventry Patmore: Florilegium Amantis In a wood. 'Twas when the spousal time of May Hangs all the hedge with bridal wreaths, And air's so sweet the bosom gay Gives thanks for every breath it breathes. When like to like is gladly moved, And each thing joins in Spring's refrain, "Let those love now who never loved; Let those who have loved love again;" That I, in whom the sweet time wrought, Lay stretch'd within a lonely glade, Abandon'd to delicious thought Beneath the softly twinkling shade. The leaves, all stirring, mimick'd well A neighbouring rush of rivers cold, And, as the sun or shadow fell, So these were green and those were gold; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Penguin Book of Victorian Verse by :
Download or read book The Penguin Book of Victorian Verse written by and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1998-10-19 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Karlin has selected poetry written and published during the reign of Queen Victoria, (1837-1901). Giving pride of place to Tennyson, Robert Browning, and Christina Rossetti, the volume offers generous selections from other major poets such asArnold, Emily Bronte, Hardy and Hopkins, and makes room for several poem-sequences in their entirety. It is wonderful, too, in its discovery and inclusion of eccentric, dissenting, un-Victorian voices, poets who squarely refuse to 'represent' their period. It also includes the work of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George Meredith, James Thomson and Augusta Webster.
