Book excerpt: The Classic Thomas Troward Book Collection (Deluxe Edition) - The Hidden Power And Other Papers On Mental Science, The Creative Process In The Individual, The Law And The Word, The Edinburgh Lectures On Mental Science, The Dore Lectures On Mental Science - Thomas Troward - The Hidden Power And Other Papers On Mental Science (First published in 1921): When we once realise that this universal and unlimited power of spirit is at the root of all things and of ourselves also, then we have obtained the key to the whole position; and, however far we may carry our studies in spiritual science, we shall nowhere find anything else but particular developments of this one universal principle. - The Creative Process In The Individual (First published in 1915): Getting things into a better order is the great secret of progress. What we are seeking, therefore, is to discover how to arrange things in such an order as to set in motion a train of causation that will harmonize our own conditions without antagonizing the exercise of a likepower by others. - The Law And The Word (First published in 1917): People are beginning to realize that Thought is a power in itself, one of the great forces of the Universe, and ultimately the greatest of forces, directing all the others. Thought is the great power of the Universe. But to make it practically available we must know something of the principles by which it works. - The Edinburgh Lectures On Mental Science (First published in 1909): The Spirit of Life seeking expression in individual lives can have no other intention towards them than "that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." To suppose the opposite would be a contradiction in terms. - The Dore Lectures On Mental Science (First published in 1921): The Spirit is that which gives life and movement to anything, in fact it is that which causes it to exist at all. The thought of the author, the impression of the painter, the feeling of the musician, is that without which their works could never have come into being, and so it is only as we enter into the IDEA which gives rise to the work, that we can derive all the enjoyment and benefit from it which it is able to bestow. New Thought, then, is not the name of a particular sect, but is the essential factor by which our own future development is to be carried on; and its essence consists in seeing the relation of things in a New Order.

Book excerpt: Combining his logician's eye with his artistic sensibilities, Thomas Troward was able to communicate truths on the most esoteric of subjects, giving them the intellectual and spiritual respect they deserve. This 1921 collection of brief essays from one of the most respected forefathers of New Age thought covers topics from the sacred to the sublime, shedding new light on mysteries that have challenged mankind for centuries. For any explorer of Being and Thought, Troward here provides invaluable insights into positive psychology, the self, God, beauty, and truth. English judge, philosopher, and painter THOMAS TROWARD (1847-1916) lived most of his life in India, in the service of the imperial monarchy. Among his publications, many of which profoundly affected the New Thought Movement, are The Law and the Word, Bible Mystery and Meaning, and The Creative Process in the Individual.

Without these lectures the New Thought Movement and The Science of Mind might never have been born. Thomas Troward was an early New Thought writer who had an immense impact on those who would follow. Ernest Holmes Frederick Bailes Joseph Murphy and Emmett Fox cited him as a major influence and Genevieve Behrend was his student. It is impossible to over estimate his importance to the New Thought movement. His intense fusion of Eastern and Western philosophy is unmatched.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything that happens, happens for a reason-or, more specifically, everything that happens is an effect of some cause that came before. This is the logical progress of physical existence. New Thought pioneer Thomas Troward, in The Creative Process in the Individual, demonstrates not only how this equation applies to all creation, but how it flows from the divine and relates to the metaphysical, as well as where the individual is placed within this schema. Comprehensively considering the spiritual and mundane aspects of such an existential question, Troward, in this 1915 classic, ultimately exposes how the individual can operate in concert with these laws in order to better his existence and more easily meet his spiritual goal: connecting with God. English judge, philosopher, and painter THOMAS TROWARD (1847-1916) lived most of his life in India, in the service of the imperial monarchy. ""To realise fully how much of our present daily life consists in symbols is to find the answer to the old, old question, What is Truth? and in the degree in which we begin to recognise this we begin to approach Truth. The realisation of Truth consists in the ability to translate symbols, whether natural or conventional, into their equivalents; and the root of all the errors of mankind consists in the inability to do this and in maintaining that the symbol has nothing behind it. The great duty incumbent on all who have attained to this knowledge is to impress upon their fellow men that there is an inner side to things, and that until this inner side is known, the things themselves are not known."" So begins ""The Hidden Power and Other Papers"", a collection of lectures and papers by Thomas Troward on various subjects.

Only an insignificant portion of his work has been deemed unworthy of permanent preservation. Whenever possible, dates have been affixed to these papers. Those published in 1902 appeared originally in “EXPRESSION: A Journal of Mind and Thought,” in London, and to some of these have been added notes made later by the author. The Publishers wish to acknowledge their indebtedness to Mr. Daniel M. Murphy of New York for his services in the selection and arrangement of the material.

Book excerpt: In Five Golden Rules, John L. Casti serves as curator to a brilliant collection of 20th-century mathematical theories, leading us on a fascinating journey of discovery and insight. Probing the frontiers of modern mathematics, Casti examines the origins of some of the most important findings of this century. This is a tale of mystery and logic, elegance and reason; it is the story of five monumental mathematical breakthroughs and how they shape our lives. All those intrigued by the mathematical process, nonacademics and professionals alike, will find this an enlightening, eye-opening, and entertaining work. High school algebra or geometry - and enthusiasm - are the only prerequisites. From the theorem that provided the impetus for modern computers to the calculations that sent the first men to the Moon, these breakthroughs have transformed our lives. Casti illustrates each theorem with a dazzling array of real-world problems it has helped solve - how to calculate the shape of space, optimize investment returns, even chart the course of the development of organisms. Along the way, we meet the leading thinkers of the day: John von Neumann, L. E. J. Brouwer, Marston Morse, and Alan Turing, among others. And we come to understand the combination of circumstances that led each to such revolutionary discoveries as the Minimax Theorem, which spawned the exciting field of game theory, and the Simplex Method, which underpins the powerful tools of optimization theory.

Book excerpt: One of the most significant books to have been written by a New Zealand business leader. Phillip Mills, the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year and a global exporter of fitness programmes to 71 countries, has spent the last year forming his views on health and fitness and sustainability into an engaging and challenging book, Fighting Globesity. All New Zealanders should read it. As Phillip jokes, "What would a couple of gym bunnies know about climate change and sustainability?" As it turns out, rather a lot. Phillip has done wide reading and research in this area over the last few years. From that he has distilled a carefully argued message: we need to get fit and stay fit, we need to consume fewer resources, we need to urgently engage with health and climate change issues - and we can make a difference. In this he may well be a step ahead of many other business thinkers. Accompanied by exercise and training programmes, nutritional information, recipes and more, FIGHTING GLOBESITY is a perfect health, fitness and philosophy package. FIGHTING GLOBESITY - A Practical Guide To Personal Health And Global Sustainability combines the Mills's experience to create a cutting-edge lifestyle prescription which will be sustainable for both the individual and the planet.
