Book excerpt: For more than forty years, the mantra of the eight women in the Bridge Club has been "one for all and all for one." Beginning their monthly soiree in the psychedelic Sixties, unpredicted twists of fate weave through the good times and strong friendship they share as the years pass. The constant from one decade to the next is loyal and nonjudgmental support, even when agreeing to disagree is the final solution. From the exhilarating cultural changes of their early times together through the "zoomer" years, their connection never falters. As they celebrate turning sixty (give or take a year) at a group birthday weekend, each woman recalls a challenging time in her life when the Bridge Club came to the rescue. After tossing around ideas mixed with a generous helping of common sense and a large dose of laughter they decide to refer to that time as their "SOS." Eight chapters document each one's story. Everything is put into perspective and the strength of their friendship is truly tested when one of these women faces a life-altering decision. Her choice profoundly affects all members of the group, pushing the limits of their beliefs and values. The unique alliance they share is confronted with a crisis none of them might have imagined.

Book excerpt: Neither of them wants romance. Too bad that's what they desperately need. Rachel Taylor's freelance business barely pays her own bills, let alone her mother's. Her social life is confined to one friend working at the neighborhood coffee shop. And her love life? Duds and heartbreakers. Then hot, young, and artistically talented Zachary Feldman walks into her life. Too bad she's just made a vow of celibacy. Sometimes what an old, broken heart needs is a second chance at love. Playboy Zack, third son of the affluent Feldman Steel empire, doesn't have a lot expected of him. Which is why he spends his whole day on his yacht when he's not pursuing his next artistic endeavor. Women are amusements. And no one amuses him more than Rachel, the beguiling woman he meets in a quiet coffee shop. "I'm not ashamed to say I'm halfway to loving you." A game of hard to get culminates with Rachel agreeing to one thing: being "just friends" with a man who has made his intentions clear. Set on the serene waters, in the creative studio, and beneath the hot lights of a bangin' Indian wedding, JUST FRIENDS is the perfect way to end your summer romance reading.

Download or read book Westward Bound written by Lesley Erickson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, European expansionism found one of its last homes in North America. While the American West was renowned for its lawlessness, the Canadian Prairies enjoyed a tamer reputation symbolized by the Mounties’ legendary triumph over chaos. Westward Bound debunks the myth of Canada’s peaceful West and the masculine conceptions of law and violence upon which it rests by shifting the focus from Mounties and whisky traders to criminal cases involving women between 1886 and 1940. Lesley Erickson reveals that judges’ and juries’ responses to the most intimate or violent acts reflected a desire to shore up the liberal order by maintaining boundaries between men and women, Native peoples and newcomers, and capital and labour. Victims and accused could only hope to harness entrenched ideas about masculinity, femininity, race, and class in their favour. The results, Erickson shows, were predictable but never certain. This fascinating exploration of hegemony and resistance in key contact zones draws prairie Canada into larger debates about law, colonialism, and nation building.
