Those who are familiar with his works, the titles of which are quoted in my list Of authorities, will readily see how much I owe to him. Wherever possible I have gone to original sources, Spanish, Latin or Arabic, but I have found that to differ from him was rash, to improve upon his work impossible. I trust I shall not be accused of presumption in giving my own translation of some passages from Arabic authors quoted in his works. I am aware that as an Arabic scholar he was unrivalled, but it has seemed to me that English often admits of a more literal rendering than French. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cid Campeador: A Historical Romance The "Cid Campeador" has been for centuries the great popular hero of Spain. He takes the same place in that country as King Arthur does in England, Roland, or Rolando, in France, and William Tell in Switzerland; and, like them, his life and exploits are, to a great extent, founded on popular traditions. In English-speaking countries there is very little known respecting him, and the translator ventures to place before the public a work which is considered by Spaniards to be one of the best historical romances in their literature. It is founded on a large number of ballads and other poetical pieces, extant in Spain for centuries, and on a very old work named "The Chronicle of the Cid." The Author writes in his Introduction: "The Cid is the most popular of the Castilian heroes, and not without reason, for in him are personified all the virtues of the citizen and of the soldier. Book excerpt: Excerpt from El Cid Campeador: An Opera in Three Acts, Eight Scenes Around the personality and the exploits of Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, El Cid Campeador, have clustered more ballads and legends and folk lore than have fallen to the lot of any other Spanish hero of romance. The Cid is the national hero of Spain and he flourished and wrought mighty deeds in that golden era when knighthood was in flower, when chivalry was at its height, the age of the crusades, when Moor and Spaniard contested for possession of the Iberian peninsula. There is such a wealth of legend and chronicle and ballad, as well substantiated as such tradi tions can be, that the dramatist is reluctantly put to it to leave out much that is thrilling and ro mantic and even theatrical, instead oi - as is usually the case - having to search for available material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Chronicle of the Cid Every nation has its hero or heroes, and the hero of the Spanish people is Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, called El Seid or Cid (the Chief). He was a historic person who really lived and died in the eleventh century, when the provinces of Spain were under different rulers and the country was continually harassed by the Moors, who were not finally driven out until 1609. About fifty years after the death of Ruy Diaz there was written a long poem called the Poema del Cid, telling of his great deeds as a leader against the Moors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lay of the Cid: Translated Into English Verse The importance of the Cid as Spain's bulwark against the Moors of the eleventh century is exceeded by his importance to his modern countrymen as the epitome of the noble and vigorous qualities that made Spain great. Menendez y Pelayo has called him the symbol of Spanish nationality in virtue of the fact that in him there were united sobriety of intention and expression, simplicity at once noble and familiar, ingenuous and easy courtesy, imagination rather solid than brilliant, piety that was more active than contemplative, genuine and soberly restrained affections, deep conjugal devotion, a clear sense of justice, loyalty to his sovereign tempered by the courage to protest against injustice to himself, a strange and appealing confusion of the spirit of chivalry and plebeian rudeness, innate probity rich in vigorous and stern sincerity, and finally a vaguely sensible delicacy of affection that is the inheritance of strong men and clean blood. This is the epic Cid who in the last quarter of the eleventh century was banished by Alphonso VI of Castile, fought his way to the Mediterranean, stormed Valencia, married his two daughters to the Heirs of Carrion and defended his fair name in parliament and in battle. The poet either from ignorance or choice has disregarded the historical significance of the campaigns of the Cid. With three hun dred followers, he left the kingdom of Alfonso, a banished man. He offered his services first to the Count of Barcelona. They were declined; He then made his way to' the Moorish King of Saragossa, by whom he. Was eagerly welcomed. Eight years he fought for him or his successors, against Moor or Christian alike, winning great renown by his daring and success, and having, by Virtue of his importance, almost royal authority. During this time he made numerous attempts at reconciliation with Alfonso, but without success. At length in 1094 he won his greatest victory, the capture of Valencia, known to this day as Valencia del Cid. It was the richest city of Spain, and there was not a King, Moor or Christian, who did not long to possess it. The Arab historians say that the Cid declared that none of his family had ever possessed a kingdom, and that from the moment when he first beheld Valencia he made up his mind to repair this omission on the part of fortune. At the head of seven thousand men, he marched against it. Destroying the suburbs, he attempted to carry it by assault, but failed, and settled down to reduce it by famine. An army of Almoravides, a fresh inroad of Moors from Africa, marched to its relief, but unavailingly, and after nine months the city yielded. In it the literature of Spain springs into life at once, strong and vigorous, without passing through an infancy of rhyming chronicle or monkish hymn or legend and it is in no small degree characteristic of a literature in which chivalry and romance play so leading a part, that, traced back to its remotest source, we should find it flowing from the achievements Of the popular national hero. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Cid Campeador A Historical Romance: Look inside the book: A good son, he avenges the insults offered to his father by bravely fighting with the Count of Gormaz: a good cavalier and faithful lover, he gives his hand and heart to the daughter of the man whom he had slain in fair combat: a good monarchist, he risks the anger of King Alfonzo by compelling him to take an oath that he was not guilty of a crime which would stain the throne of Fernando the Great: a good soldier and a good vassal, he conquers, with his invincible sword, hostile realms and Moorish kings, and lays at the feet of his Pg vi sovereign, who had unjustly banished him, the spoils which he had won and the countries of which he had made himself master: a good patrician, loving the glory and the preponderance of his native land, he proceeds to Rome, enters the Church of St. ...Peranzures, Arias Gonzalo, and Diego Lainez bent their knees and kissed the hand of the king, in order to thank him for the great favours which he had conferred on them, as was their duty as good and grateful subjects; De Gormaz, however, when his turn came, gave loose reins to the anger which had been accumulating in his heart whilst the other cavaliers were being thus addressed, especially De Vivar, who appeared to him to have been unjustly favoured by the king, whose coldness towards himself he attributed to the evil counsels of the honoured old man, who indeed was far from deserving such a suspicion. About Ant??nio de Trueba, the Author: To earn his daily bread he discharged the duties of a clerk in a small commercial house, but all the while he beguiled his leisure and his moments of regret by writing little poems and tales redolent of the yearnings and sympathies of a Basque transplanted to the busy cosmopolitan center. ...His popularity was fixed by the appearance of his first collection of lyrics, the Cantares (Madrid, 1852), and for the next eleven years he was absorbed by journalistic work, the best of his contributions being issued under the titles of Cuentos populares (1862), Cuentos de color de rosa (1864), and Cuentos campesinos (1865).

From 1826 to 185 3 he was the editor of the Quarterly Review.
