Book excerpt: Philosophy begins, Aristotle said, with wonder; it addresses the great questions of life. This process of self-discovery through philosophy leads one to ask questions not only about human existence but also about God. In Philosophy: The Quest for Truth and Meaning,Andrew Beards introduces readers to some key philosophical ideas 'the mind's ability to know truth and reality, metaphysics, ethics, and questioning life's ultimate purpose 'in order to guide them in philosophical reflection. By examining the development of philosophy, Beards demonstrates and makes a case for the interplay of faith and reason. Andrew Beards, PhD, is reader in philosophy and director of the distance-learning B.A. Philosophy and the Catholic Tradition program at Maryvale Institute, an international institute for philosophy and theology based in Birmingham, UK.
Book Synopsis A 21st Century Christian's Quest for Truth by : Lowell JK Davis
Download or read book A 21st Century Christian's Quest for Truth written by Lowell JK Davis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any book that attempts to assert basic truth about the origins, nature and relationship of humankind with the Earth and universe we live in is inherently controversial. Throughout human history truth claims have been based on authority, faith, and observed evidence. Each of these sources of truth have changed truth claims over time. Only about 500 years ago any fool could observe that the earth was a flat surface (not a sphere spinning at about 700 miles per hour at the equator) with a sun that traveled above the surface of the earth about every 24 hours(23 hrs and 56 min). In a very short period of human history our evidence or observation based truth claims have expanded exponentially as we have advanced our unaided human observations. Examples include: space based instruments that transmit vast amounts of information about an unimaginably large universe; atom smashers that provide knowledge of the smallest element or force within an unimaginably small atom; seismographic instruments that can analyze and map deep inside the Earth; glacial ice core analysis that tell us a lot about annual climates and major earth events on a year by year basis over hundreds of thousands of years in the past; recent advances in radiocarbon and radiometric and other dating methods that provide a reliable chronology of Earth and plant and animal life over the past 4.65 billion years; oceanographic vehicles that explore the extreme depths of the oceans that cover the majority of the earth’s surface; and, instruments that allow humans to study the very basic sub-microscopic elements (DNA) that make up plant and animal life. This book does not claim to be a fully documented scientific or religious text. It is based on one persons extensive research of authoritative sources. Even research requires evaluation of sources and subsequent conclusions. Thus, this book is proposed as an editorial opinion based on one person’s “quest for truth in the 21st Century”.

Download or read book Beyond the Cave written by Peter Christian Vardy and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth is increasingly marginalized. Powerful news interests, social media and political orators all seem to point to the idea that the days of absolute Truth are past. Religions have always claimed to stand for a transcendent dimension to reality and to the idea of an absolute claim to Truth but, in the West, religion has been and is declining in influence. Fundamentalism is on the rise and this, combined with relativism, contributes to the current malaise. Peter Vardy has a passionate commitment to helping people think about key issues deeply, yet writes in a lucid and clear style. In Beyond the Cave he explains why claims to absolute Truth have become severely eroded but he also charts a way forward.

Download or read book Saving Truth written by Abdu Murray and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Christians defend truth and clarity to a world that rejects both? Increasingly, Western culture embraces confusion as a virtue and decries certainty as a sin. Those who are confused about sexuality and identity are viewed as heroes. Those who are confused about morality are progressive pioneers. Those who are confused about spirituality are praised as tolerant. Conversely, those who express certainty about any of these issues are seen as bigoted, oppressive, arrogant, or intolerant. This cultural phenomenon led the compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary to name "post-truth" their word of the year in 2016. It's popularity and relevance has only increased since then. By accurately describing the Culture of Confusion and how it has affected our society, author Abdu Murray seeks to awaken Westerners to the plight we find ourselves in. He also challenges Christians to consider how they have played a part in fostering the Culture of Confusion through bad arguments, unwise labeling, and emotional attacks. Ultimately, Saving Truth provides arguments from a Christian perspective for the foundations of truth and how those foundations impart clarity to the biggest topics of human existence: Freedom. Human dignity. Sexuality, Gender, and Identity. Science and Faith. Religious pluralism and Morality. For those enmeshed in the culture of confusion, Saving Truth offers a way to untangle oneself and find hope in the clarity that Christ offers.
Book Synopsis A Quest for Truth and Wisdom by : Robert Wilson
Download or read book A Quest for Truth and Wisdom written by Robert Wilson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth to some may be what is seen in the natural universe. Truth to some may be what is expressed by some individual who seems to be successful or charismatic. Truth to some may be what the Bible says. Truth to some may span a complex variety of issues, and to others, to be quite simple. Webster's Dictionary says to attain wisdom a person must have good sense, good judgment, insight, and knowledge. Does that limit the number of persons who can have wisdom? This search for truth and wisdom comes from the perspectives of Western culture, scientific approach, logic, reason, and monotheistic philosophies. Monotheism encompasses Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and some other lesser-known belief systems. This subject might be treated differently from the perspectives of Eastern cultures, emotion, mysticism, or more spiritual concepts and polytheistic religious philosophies. The latter perspectives are not discussed here. This work addresses some aspects of the concepts of truth. Questions are asked and answers are suggested. Original Greek scripture is referenced rather than any translation or interpretation that could have been influenced by a particular theological philosophy, organized church, church tradition, or seminary. I propose a third concept to add to Evolution and Creation, or Intelligent design--the Eternal or Forever concept--everything has simply always been and always will be. No beginning and no end. I discuss aspects of the nature of man. I discuss intelligence, intellectualism, and education. I discuss global intelligence and terrorism in the world of today. I discuss dualisms in American culture. I discuss science and our limited view in space and time. I discuss difficult or significant passages in the Bible, with emphasis on the original Greek.

Book Synopsis Berkouwer and Catholicism by : Eduardo Echeverria
Download or read book Berkouwer and Catholicism written by Eduardo Echeverria and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer (1903-1996) was a great master of dogmatic and ecumenical theology. He was a Reformed Protestant thinker, with roots in Dutch neo-Calvinism, a holder of the Chair in Dogmatics (1945-1974) at the Free University, Amsterdam, a position previously held by his two illustrious neo-Calvinist predecessors, Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) and Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). Echeverria provides a much needed in-depth analysis and critique of his theology, particularly his evolving relationship with Catholicism in light of Vatican II. His contention is that Berkouwer’s careful and nuanced examination of Catholic theology—as well as possible responses to his critiques—offers important clues for the contemporary ecumenical project.

Book Synopsis Toward a Humean True Religion by : Andre C. Willis
Download or read book Toward a Humean True Religion written by Andre C. Willis and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hume is traditionally seen as a devastating critic of religion. He is widely read as an infidel, a critic of the Christian faith, and an attacker of popular forms of worship. His reputation as irreligious is well forged among his readers, and his argument against miracles sits at the heart of the narrative overview of his work that perennially indoctrinates thousands of first-year philosophy students. In Toward a Humean True Religion, Andre Willis succeeds in complicating Hume’s split approach to religion, showing that Hume was not, in fact, dogmatically against religion in all times and places. Hume occupied a “watershed moment,” Willis contends, when old ideas of religion were being replaced by the modern idea of religion as a set of epistemically true but speculative claims. Thus, Willis repositions the relative weight of Hume’s antireligious sentiment, giving significance to the role of both historical and discursive forces instead of simply relying on Hume’s personal animus as its driving force. Willis muses about what a Humean “true religion” might look like and suggests that we think of this as a third way between the classical and modern notions of religion. He argues that the cumulative achievements of Hume’s mild philosophic theism, the aim of his moral rationalism, and the conclusion of his project on the passions provide the best content for this “true religion.”
Book Synopsis Seeking Wisdom from God by : Thomas H. Walker
Download or read book Seeking Wisdom from God written by Thomas H. Walker and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking Wisdom from God presents a fresh and unique look at some Biblical topics. Because knowledge increases faster than wisdom, we have an abundance of Biblical knowledge and a shortage of Biblical wisdom. Knowledge has increased, due to our advances in understanding the ancient Hebrew and Greek languages coupled with the dissecting of Scripture using historical, textual, and literary analysis. Tragically, Christianity looks nothing like its inception on the Day of Pentecost. Why are there over 20,000 different denominations? Why do I still sin daily? Have we replaced Divine Illumination with historical, literary and textual analysis? If Adam had not sinned, the worlds population would have reached 100 billion in 1,836 years. How are we all going to fit on this planet when eternity begins? Why did God plant a fruit-yielding tree in Eden and then forbid Adam and Eve from eating of its fruit? This was a very good book by a man of great wisdom Five Stars, LibraryThing Reviewer Its such an eye opener book Five Stars, LibraryThing Reviewer This is an excellent book for Bible study. It brings Biblical truths into a new perspective Five Stars, LibraryThing Reviewer a marvelous fusion of faith and scholarship First Editing
