Book Synopsis Ancient Methone, 2003-2013 by : Sarah P. Morris
Download or read book Ancient Methone, 2003-2013 written by Sarah P. Morris and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 1518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations at ancient Methone since 2003 by the Greek Ministry of Culture have uncovered remains from the Late Neolithic period through the fourth-century B.C. destruction by Philip II of Macedon. These discoveries extend the history of the city, a colony of Eretria (Euboia) since the late eighth century B.C., by nearly three thousand years into Greek prehistory. This volume presents results of the project in selected artefacts, burials, and structures representing the chief phases of the city, in chronological order. An introduction covers historical sources, excavations from 2003 to 2013, and the unique location of Methone. Part I details the prehistoric settlement at Methone, from the fourth millennium to 1000 B.C., and the Bronze Age burials. Part II focuses on the copious artifacts and ecofacts from the Early Iron Age "Hypogeion" shaft. Part III presents artifacts and architecture from the Archaic and Classical periods, through the final daysof the siege of the city in 354 B.C. The significance of this work lies in its interdisciplinary methods, combining stylistic analysis of artifacts and source-critical philology with natural history, bioarchaeology, materials analysis, and geochemistry, whose results reveal the long-term history of a site crucial to the economic and political history of Classical Greece and the north Aegean.

Book Synopsis A History of Yugoslavia by : Marie-Janine Calic
Download or read book A History of Yugoslavia written by Marie-Janine Calic and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Yugoslavia fall apart? Was its violent demise inevitable? Did its population simply fall victim to the lure of nationalism? How did this multinational state survive for so long, and where do we situate the short life of Yugoslavia in the long history of Europe in the twentieth century? A History of Yugoslavia provides a concise, accessible, comprehensive synthesis of the political, cultural, social, and economic life of Yugoslavia—from its nineteenth-century South Slavic origins to the bloody demise of the multinational state of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Calic takes a fresh and innovative look at the colorful, multifaceted, and complex history of Yugoslavia, emphasizing major social, economic, and intellectual changes from the turn of the twentieth century and the transition to modern industrialized mass society. She traces the origins of ethnic, religious, and cultural divisions, applying the latest social science approaches, and drawing on the breadth of recent state-of-the-art literature, to present a balanced interpretation of events that takes into account the differing perceptions and interests of the actors involved. Uniquely, Calic frames the history of Yugoslavia for readers as an essentially open-ended process, undertaken from a variety of different regional perspectives with varied composite agenda. She shuns traditional, deterministic explanations that notorious Balkan hatreds or any other kind of exceptionalism are to blame for Yugoslavia’s demise, and along the way she highlights the agency of twentieth-century modern mass society in the politicization of differences. While analyzing nuanced political and social-economic processes, Calic describes the experiences and emotions of ordinary people in a vivid way. As a result, her groundbreaking work provides scholars and learned readers alike with an accessible, trenchant, and authoritative introduction to Yugoslavia's complex history.

Book Synopsis North-Western Thrace from the Fifth to First Centuries BC by : Nikola Theodossiev
Download or read book North-Western Thrace from the Fifth to First Centuries BC written by Nikola Theodossiev and published by British Archaeological Reports. This book was released on 2000 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a variety of sources of evidence and over-coming many difficulties with the data, this study provides a good factual account of the Late Iron Age in North-West Thrace. It is at this time that the Thracian tribes reached the peak of their cultural development and Nikola Theodossiev assesses the major events and achievements of this period. Her reconstruction of cultural and historical development focuses on the archaeological and written evidence, and on the subjects of spatial organisation and territories, chronology, mortuary practices and settlement. The evidence is collated and interpreted, frequently with statistical analysis, and is well presented.
