Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Occupation of Africa: The Proceedings of a Conference of Mission Boards Engaged in Work in the Continent of Africa, Held in New York City, November 20, 21, and 22, 1917, Together With the Findings of the Conference The Chairman: A religious convention was being held a while ago at which one of the speakers remarked, We ought to do something for the poor. Whereupon an enthusiastic man in the audience rose and said, I propose that we give them three cheers. We are gathered here in order that we may do something for the poor - the Lord's poor, the poorest of the poor, a whole continent of men who have been passed by and neglected more than any other people of the earth. We meet to give them good cheer, but it is the cheer not of words but of definite, practical plans looking to their betterment. I think we meet in the consciousness that more than of our fellow beings may be benefited by what God may say to us and lead us to do as Societies engaged in missionary work in behalf of the A'fricans. I want that we shall feel the presence of that dusky multitude in all of our deliberations, as well as the presence of the invisible Father and Friend. At this point the chairman read the following letter from Mr. J. H. Oldham, Secretary of the Edinburgh Continuation Committee, which he commended as most timely and as an appropriate introduction to the Conference. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Ecumenical Movement with particular emphasis on Africa's impact on the making of ecumenical mission mandates during the formative years, 1900-1958. Previous studies have mainly focused on the Continents of Europe, North America, and Asia, with Africa seen as inactive during these years. By contrast Dr. Utuk concentrates on the problems which helped to give birth to the Movement, with Africa seen as an indispensable ecumenical partner. This fresh perspective emerges through an analysis of sixteen conferences based on six fascinating themes, including the role played by several, hitherto unknown, native African and African-American pioneer ecumenists. Utuk's evidence and arguments will be of great interest to historians, social scientists and all those concerned with the future of Christianity and ecumenism in our modern world.
