Book excerpt: This volume provides researchers and students of religion with an indispensable reference work on the history, cultural impact, and reshaping of Christianity in Japan. Divided into three parts, Part I focuses on Christianity in Japanese history and includes studies of the Roman Catholic mission in pre-modern Japan, the 'hidden Christian' tradition, Protestant missions in the modern period, Bible translations, and theology in Japan. Part II examines the complex relationship between Christianity and various dimensions of Japanese society, such as literature, politics, social welfare, education for women, and interaction with other religious traditions. Part III focuses on resources for the study of Christianity in Japan and provides a guide to archival collections, research institutes, and bibliographies. Based on both Japanese and Western scholarship, readers will find this volume to be a fascinating and important guide.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Movement in Japan, 1912, Vol. 10 With this issue the Christian Movement enters upon a new period of its history. Up to the present tintie it has been very largely the work of Dr. D. C. Greene, who, when in Japan, has carried for the most part the burden of Editorship. The earlier volumes were almost exclusively the work of his gifted pen, and while later assisted by Prof. E. W. Clement and Mr. G. M. Fisher, as well as by an increasing number of contributors, it is mainly due to his ability and pains taking labor that the Annual has gained the place that it holds to-day. The loss occasioned by the necessary change of editors is in some measure compensated for by Dr. Greene's kind consent to prepare for the present issue the opening Chapter on General Survey in which as in former years he gives a clear and com prehensive review of the events of the past year. The other Associate Editors have also prepared im portant chapters which required such wide research and careful study as no one man could find time for in addition to his regular work. The editor-in-chief has confined himself for the most part to the work of compilation, believing that the best results could only thus be secured. The editor wishes to draw attention to the comparative totals for the Protestant churches, including Formosa, for 1905, 1910, 1915 and 1920, respectively. The total Christian constituency has increased from in 1905; in 1910; 118, 150 in 1915 to in 1920, not including the Salva tion Army force of Christians Soldiers. The total givings for all purposes in the Japanese churches have increased from in 1905; in 1910; in 1915; to in 1920. Other comparisons Show equally gratifying progress. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese Christian leader Takakura Tokutaro, 1885-1934, is the focus of this exhaustive historical and theological study. Takakura's life spanned a critical period in developing Japan, a new member of the "modern family of nations." At the age of 21, through the preaching of the immensely influential church leader Uemura Masahisa, Takakura converted to the Christian faith. He later spent over two years in the West, reading extensively in British and German theology. Takakura thus faced the challenge of absorbing numerous lines of influence and re-articulating the Christian faith within his own generation's distinctly Japanese linguistic and religio-cultural context. His personal religious experience was a microcosm of the universalization of Christian theology during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Despite having played important leadership roles within the Protestant Church in Japan during the 1920s and early 1930s, Takakura's name is scarcely known outside limited Japanese theological circles. This study lends recognition to his influential role in the Christian Church. It also utilizes Takakura's example to provide further insight into the universalizing trend in Christian thought that continues even today.

Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly treatment of nineteenth-century Christianity to discuss the subject in a global context. Part I analyses the responses of Catholic and Protestant Christianity to the intellectual and social challenges presented by European modernity. It gives attention to the explosion of new voluntary forms of Christianity and the expanding role of women in religious life. Part II surveys the diverse and complex relationships between the churches and nationalism, resulting in fundamental changes to the connections between church and state. Part III examines the varied fortunes of Christianity as it expanded its historic bases in Asia and Africa, established itself for the first time in Australasia, and responded to the challenges and opportunities of the European colonial era. Each chapter has a full bibliography providing guidance on further reading.

Watanabe was not forthcoming in time to be published in this volume. Perhaps the most unsatisfactory section of the book is the statistical record. The manner of tabulating statis tics differs So greatly in the various churches that it is exceedingly difficult to make this part of the book absolutely reliable. The missionary directory has been corrected up through May and is therefore as accurate as it can be made under the circumstances. Unstinted thanks are due to all who have gladly contributed of their time and energy towards the compilation of this volume.
