Book excerpt: The classical accounts of Greek and Roman writers; and subsequently; the works of Chinese pilgrims portrayed the splendour of civilization in ancient India. By the seventh century; the world scenario had altered significantly with the advent of Islam and the attendant era of Arab expansion. The age of Arab travellers; geographers; merchants and historians commenced with the Islamic ascendancy. India was then at a high point in her intellectual and cultural attainments. The Arabs transmitted knowledge of Indian numerals; mathematics; philosophy and logic; mysticism; ethics; statecraft; military science; medicine; astronomy and astrology to the outside world. Arab travellers described the grandeur and wealth of the kings of India; singling out for special mention the Palas; the Gurjara Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas. Politically; while north India was being subjected to Arab and Turkish invasions which culminated in the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate in A.D. 1206; the south moved on a different trajectory. In the last quarter of the tenth century; the mighty Cholas on the Coromandel Coast replaced the Rashtrakutas as the paramount kings of India. By A.D. 1200; the Chola kingdom had withered away. In A.D. 1336; was established the Vijayanagar kingdom; which stood as a bulwark against Muslim attacks from the north for over two centuries. Meanwhile; several European missions and missionaries undertook the journey to China; visiting India en route; or on their return journey. European merchants took advantage of the land routes opened by the Mongol conquests and some of them managed to visit India. Besides the works of European travellers; traders and merchants; several Chinese accounts of India are also available from the twelfth century. Book excerpt: Sir Charles Eliot's "Hinduism and Buddhism, An Historical Sketch, Vol. 2" is a gigantic work that provides a comprehensive analysis of the origins, development, and historical circumstances of Hinduism and Buddhism. This scholarly masterwork demonstrates Eliot's remarkable comprehension of both of the main Asian religions and their effect on Indian and global cultures and society. Volume 2 dives into Hinduism's ancient roots, chronicling its development from the earliest Vedic traditions to the diverse and multifaceted belief systems which developed over time. He explores Hinduism's philosophical, mythical, and ritual parts, providing readers an in-depth knowledge of its many customs and beliefs. Furthermore, the book exhaustively traces Buddhism's rise, its founder, Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), and the spread of this transforming spiritual movement throughout Asia. Eliot investigates not only the tenets and customs of Buddhism, but also its historical relationships with Hinduism and the larger social milieu. Some stories are brutal and weird, while others creep up on you and draw you in slowly. This version of "Hinduism and Buddhism, An Historical Sketch, Vol. 2" is both modern and legible, with an eye-catching new cover and professionally typeset manuscript.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope, Struggle and Defeat: The Communist International and the Global Fight for Freedom The Communist International was the first organised attempt to bring about worldwide revolution and left a lasting mark on 20th-century history. The book offers a new and fascinating account of this transnational organisation founded in 1919 by Lenin and Trotsky and dissolved by Stalin in 1943, telling the story through the eyes of the activists who became its “professional revolutionaries.” Studer follows such figures as Willi Münzenberg, Mikhail Borodin, M.N. Roy and Evelyn Trent, Tina Modotti, Agnes Smedley and many others less well-known as they are despatched to the successive political hotspots of the 1920s and ’30s, from revolutionary Berlin to Baku, from Shanghai to Spain, from Nazi Germany to Stalin’s Moscow. It traces their journeys from revolutionary hope to accommodation, defeat or death, looking at questions of motivation and commitment, agency and negotiation, of life and love, conflict and frustration. In doing so, it reveals a forgotten Comintern, the expression of a multi-dimensional revolutionary moment, which attracted not only working-class but feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial and anti-imperialist activists, highlighting the role of women in the Comintern and the centrality of anti-colonialism to the Communist project. The book concludes with a reflection on the ultimate demise of a historically unique undertaking.
