Book excerpt: This study, "Survival Through Adaptations: The Chinese Red Army and the Extermination Campaigns, 1927-1936," analyzes the Chinese Red Army from 1927 to 1936 to determine how the Red Army survived attacks from external military forces and also successfully overcame the threats to its existence posed by changing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) policies. During this period, the CCP attempted to develop, expand, and professionalize the Chinese Red Army as a way to defend Communist base areas from a series of Kuomingtang (KMT) Extermination Campaigns. Also during these years, changes in the CCP leadership often placed the Red Army in dangerous situations by underestimating the KMT military threat and overestimating Red Army capabilities. This re-examination of the origin and development of the Chinese People's Liberation Army looks at the Chinese Red Army's strategy, tactics, organization, and training and identifies four themes that helped it adapt and survive: a pragmatic strategy focused on long-term success; creating local populace support through adaptation; strong soldier recruiting, training, and retention; and a comprehensive officer development system.
Book Synopsis The Chinese Communist Armed Forces by : Kenneth R. Whiting
Download or read book The Chinese Communist Armed Forces written by Kenneth R. Whiting and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the history and present state of the Chinese Communist military forces are not as well covered as those of the Soviet Union, nevertheless, there is a relatively large number of books, articles, and source collections available in English. Then why this study. The answer is simply that this is an attempt to tell the story of the Chinese Red Army in as concise a form as possible without compressing the narrative to the point of distortion. The study may seem overstuffed with facts, or what pass for facts, but the author can assure the reader that he did his best to eliminate all but those he considered essential. The historical approach has been used for the simple reason that like any other organism the Chinese Red Army is a melange of strengths and weaknesses rooted in its evolution.

Book Synopsis A Military History of China by : David Andrew Graff
Download or read book A Military History of China written by David Andrew Graff and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaining an understanding of China's long and sometimes bloody history can help to shed light on China's ascent to global power. Many of China's imperial dynasties were established as the result of battle, from the chariot warfare of ancient times to the battles of the Guomindang (KMT) and Communist regimes of the twentieth century. China's ability to sustain complex warfare on a very large scale was not emulated in other parts of the world until the Industrial Age, despite the fact that the country is only now rising to economic dominance. In A Military History of China, Updated Edition, David A. Graff and Robin Higham bring together leading scholars to offer a basic introduction to the military history of China from the first millennium B.C.E. to the present. Focusing on recurring patterns of conflict rather than traditional campaign narratives, this volume reaches farther back into China's military history than similar studies. It also offers insightful comparisons between Chinese and Western approaches to war. This edition brings the volume up to date, including discussions of the Chinese military's latest developments and the country's most recent foreign conflicts.
Book Synopsis Desire and Fictional Narrative in Late Imperial China by : Martin W. Huang
Download or read book Desire and Fictional Narrative in Late Imperial China written by Martin W. Huang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this new study of desire in Late Imperial China, Martin Huang argues that the development of traditional Chinese fiction as a narrative genre was closely related to changes in conceptions of the fundamental nature of desire. He further suggests that the rise of vernacular fiction during the late Ming dynasty should be studied in the context of contemporary debates on desire, along with the new and complex views that emerged from those debates.Desire and Fictional Narrative in Late Imperial China shows that the obsession of authors with individual desire is an essential quality that defines traditional Chinese fiction as a narrative genre. Thus the maturation of the genre can best be appreciated in terms of its increasingly sophisticated exploration of the phenomenon of desire."
