Book excerpt: We cannot afford to miss the remarkable rise of Chinese business ecosystems. Alibaba and their peers Baidu, Tencent, Xiaomi, and LeEco showcase unprecedented growth and success in China and are expanding their impact globally. With a combined market capitalization of close to 600 billion USD, incubating over 1,000 new ventures and an average annual growth of over 50%, they have become a force to reckon with for the likes of Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and IBM. 'Business ecosystem' is a frequently used concept to describe the unique competitive advantages of the American technology giants. This book explores not only the application of a business ecosystem approach in the Chinese context but also deals with the key strategic question: How did these five Chinese business ecosystems grow so rapidly and successfully? The book takes the growth and transformation of Alibaba's business ecosystem as a focus case in comparison with Baidu, Tencent, Xiaomi, and LeEco. These business ecosystems developed in less than 20 years and transformed from organic growth to rapid expansion by investment and acquisition, entrepreneurship and incubation of new ventures, continuous innovation, and internationalization. This book brings insights and practical lessons on leading, creating, and disrupting markets for corporate executives and professionals in global business, a comparative case study for researchers and students of management, and food for thought on Chinese ways of doing business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A business ecosystem may be defined as a dynamic group of largely independent economic players that create products or services that together constitute a coherent solution for customers. Business ecosystems are high on the agenda of many business leaders. They are now highly prevalent, frequently disruptive, and all companies should add the required capabilities to their strategy toolbox. Business Ecosystems is based on more than three years of research by the BCG Henderson Institute, their work with dozens of companies on their ecosystem strategies, and hundreds of conversations with academics, managers, investors, entrepreneurs, and government employees. Part I reviews the fundamentals of business ecosystems – definition, design, success factors, governance, strategies. Part II elaborates on special topics, such as trust and data, industry applications, and their potential for sustainability. Ecosystems might not be a solution for all problems, but they are also not a transitory phenomenon. The field is evolving fast and as the success factors for creating, managing and participating in business ecosystems are increasingly accepted and understood, many established and emerging companies have the opportunity to put themselves in a position to unlock great innovation and value creation potential by engaging in ecosystem business models. This book will support business professionals and executives on this journey.

From traditional companies--like Huawei and Midea--that have transitioned through mergers and acquisitions, to other enterprises--such as Haier and HLA--that have evolved by embracing internet technologies and new business models, this book explores how private Chinese companies have changed to sustain growth and even serve as a roadmap for companies elsewhere looking to adapt to the interconnected new economy. With its pulse on the Chinese economy, this book also looks at startups, like Ucommune, Tujia and Alibaba's Hema Fresh, which are adapting and localizing ideas for China, while innovating beyond the original concept to create a better model for the new business ecosystem. Addressing financing of businesses, the book examines how Qihoo 360 leveraged American and Chinese capital markets, while Alibaba's Ant Financial leveraged the Internet, to redefine funding and open up new opportunities for businesses. Finally, it highlights how a non-profit institution, Adream Foundation, rethinks charity and education by integrating business management models in its social work.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,00, Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to identify business ecosystem’s embedded factors as potential drivers for business model innovations, and thus to contribute to an expansion of innovation opportunities. In the context of the consideration of different ecosystem concepts, first, their characteristics and roles are presented, to make a precise distinction related and traditional structures (e.g. value network, supply chain). Innovation ecosystems, business ecosystems, and platform ecosystems are considered in this study and empirically examined employing a multiple case study. To ensure the value of the study, only companies that have implemented a business model innovation within one of the defined ecosystems were included. Innovations within the value chain of a single company can no longer fully satisfy new and dynamic customer needs. It is, therefore, appropriate to intensify the network of relationships outside the company. This is remedied by the value contribution resulting from the companies' ecosystems, which is higher than that of individual companies. However, in the ecosystem’s environment, the success of a company is strongly dependent on the success of its diverse and changing collaborations with other companies of different sizes and types. Due to the embedding in different ecosystems, the understanding of a company as an independent strategic actor is no longer appropriate in every case.

Book excerpt: Fortune Makers analyzes and brings to light the distinctive practices of business leaders who are the future of the Chinese economy. These leaders oversee not the old state-owned enterprises, but private companies that have had to invent their way forward out of the wreckage of an economy in tatters following the Cultural Revolution. Outside of brand names such as Alibaba and Lenovo, little is known, even by the Chinese themselves, about the people present at the creation of these innovative businesses. Fortune Makers provides sharp insights into their unique styles--a distinctive blend of the entrepreneur, the street fighter, and practices developed by the Communist Party--and their distinctive ways of leading and managing their organizations that are unlike anything the West is familiar with. When Peter Drucker published Concept of the Corporation in 1946, he revealed what made large American corporations tick. Similarly, when Japanese companies emerged as a global force in the 1980s, insightful analysts explained the practices that brought Japan's economy out of the ashes--and what managers elsewhere could learn to compete with them. Now, based on unprecedented access, Fortune Makers allows business leaders in the United States and the rest of the West to understand the essential character and style of Chinese corporate life and its dominant players, whose businesses are the foundation of the domestic Chinese market and are now making their mark globally.
