Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a talent for storytelling and metaphors flowing from the deepest level of her mind, Sabrina’s poems are powerful at awakening change within the reader. It is said that poetry forms a bridge from the unconscious to the conscious part of the mind, allowing emotions and thoughts to emerge for healing and deep self-reflection. The poems within this book are designed to invite communication and reconnection, first and foremost with yourself but also with others. Each piece of writing is designed for self-reflection and can be used as a tool for gaining insight into what is most important to you at this point in time, right in this moment. As you read each poem, allow your innermost voice to emerge and simply listen so that you may hear what it is telling you about where you are right now.

Book excerpt: Extravagantly opaque, willfully vaporous - Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II, released by the estimable British label Warp Records in 1994, rejuvenated ambient music for the Internet Age that was just dawning. In the United States, it was Richard D. James's first full length on Sire Records (home to Madonna and Depeche Mode) under the moniker Aphex Twin; Sire helped usher him in as a major force in music, electronic or otherwise. Faithful to Brian Eno's definition of ambient music, Selected Ambient Works Volume II was intentionally functional: it furnished chill out rooms, the sanctuaries amid intense raves. Choreographers and film directors began to employ it to their own ends, and in the intervening decades this background music came to the fore, adapted by classical composers who reverse-engineered its fragile textures for performance on acoustic instruments. Simultaneously, “ambient” has moved from esoteric sound art to central tenet of online culture. This book contends that despite a reputation for being beatless, the album exudes percussive curiosity, providing a sonic metaphor for our technologically mediated era of countless synchronized nanosecond metronomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the films inspired by Orson Welles's lifelong involvement with Shakespeare, the greatest is Chimes at Midnight (1966). It is a masterly conflation of the Shakespearean history plays that feature Falstaff, the great comic figure played by Welles himself in the film. For Welles, the character was also potentially tragic: the doomed friendship between Falstaff and Prince Hal becomes an image of the end of an age. To this epic subject Welles brings the innovative film techniques that made him famous in Citizen Kane, The Lady from Shanghai,"and Touch of Evil. This volume offers a complete continuity script of Chimes at Midnight, including its famous battle sequence. Each shot is described in detail and is keyed to the original Shakesperian sources, thus making the volume an invaluable guide to Welles as an adaptor and creator of texts. The first complete transcription of the continuity script of Chimes is accompanied by the editor's critical introduction on Welles's transformation of Shakespeare; a special interview with Keith Baxter, one of the film's principal actors, which discusses its production history; reviews and articles; and a biographical sketch of Welles, a filmography, and a bibliography.

Book excerpt: Do you enjoy samples, say a box of chocolates, filled with assorted samples to pick from? Here is a box set of cozy mysteries and cozy paranormal mysteries to try out. Each book is the first in the series to give you a taste of what the series will be like. I've set all the books in tropical South Florida, where the beautiful beaches hold more than sunny days of fun. There is plenty of murder and mystery, pets, and amateur sleuths following the clues. Mist At The Beach House brings Morgan Seaver to her childhood home only to be blamed for the murder of her aunt, and a family legend of mermaids and revenge that must be sorted out. Along with a mysterious Kitten from the mist, Morgan begins to unravel the past. Killer Focus finds Piper Avery having a bad day, an awful day. A pink slip, her 50th birthday, and being notified her mother and mother-in-law have bought the house across the street are only the start. Because the next thing she knows, she has discovered a body on the beach. Add in a new dog, a bit of a diva, and Piper's life begins to change. Whispered Voices are what Mac now hears after a dangerously close hit by a bolt of lightning. But these aren't the friendly voices of friends or family. No, she can now hear the voices of killers as they plan the next murder. Mac must listen to the voices in her head to solve the mysteries before it's too late. And she must accept that not all fairy-tales are make-believe. Murder for Neptune's Trident is about Megan Cassidy's witnessing a brutal murder and her efforts to figure out why the young man was killed--before his killers find her. Along with the help of her clue sniffing beagle, Barney, Megan finds out that the past can really haunt you.

Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging study, Josephine McDonagh examines the idea of child murder in British culture in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Analysing texts drawn from economics, philosophy, law, medicine as well as from literature, McDonagh highlights the manifold ways in which child murder echoes and reverberates in a variety of cultural debates and social practices. She places literary works within social, political and cultural contexts, including debates on luxury, penal reform campaigns, slavery, the treatment of the poor, and birth control. She traces a trajectory from Swift's A Modest Proposal through to the debates on the New Woman at the turn of the twentieth century by way of Burke, Wordsworth, Wollstonecraft, George Eliot, George Egerton, and Thomas Hardy, among others. McDonagh demonstrates the haunting persistence of the notion of child murder within British culture in a volume that will be of interest to cultural and literary scholars alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 - The Root: Foundation Modern literacy education in African music has hitherto focused more on observed context studies. The philosophical rooting and the psychological and therapeutic force that ground African indigenous musical arts have not been much discerned or integrated. Much needed in contemporary education, then, are integrative studies and literature materials that represent the intellectual base of the knowledge owners and creators, and which will ensure cognitive understanding of the indigenous musical arts systems of Africa. There is as yet no comprehensive, learner-centred book that fosters African indigenous knowledge perspectives and rationalisation about the musical arts. The concern over the years has been for the production of research-informed books for modern, systematic education in African musical arts that derive in essence from the original African intellectual perspectives about the sense and meaning of music - indigenous to contemporary. The five volumes of the musical arts study series derive from 36 years of research and analytical studies in African musical arts. The volumes address the pressing need for learning texts informed by the indigenous African musical arts systems that target tertiary education. The texts incorporate knowledge of conventional European classical music as they relate to the unique features of African musical arts thinking and theoretical content. The contemporary African musical arts specialist needs secure grounding in his/her own human-cultural knowledge authority in order to contribute with original intellectual integrity to African as well as global scholarship discourse and knowledge creation.
