Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Second Reader IF Heaven lies about us in our infancy the realm of poetry cannot be far distant. It is a significant, as well as a beautiful fact, that our poets have been so noble and true that we are glad to have the children learn of them. They have manifested, too, such a love of innocence and childhood in their home lives, that the little ones who never have had the privilege of looking into their faces may yet understand this beautiful relationship, and so, being drawn closer to their lives, appreciate and love their poems. In introducing the poets Longfellow and Whittier into the following pages the author has not undertaken any comprehensive account of their lives; but the purpose has been to picture them to the children in such a way as to make them real personages, and also to lead up to such of their poems as appeal to the little ones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones Second Reader The Second Reader makes a distinct advance from the First Reader of this series in the range and character of its vocabulary and in the difficulty of its subject matter. The attention of pupils may now be held through a longer narrative; and a much fuller treatment may now be given to ethical problems, looking toward the formation of ideals of life and conduct. Good literature correctly interpreted teaches its own lessons. When the child has learned to love good litera ture, he absorbs the life-giving elements from it as natu rally as he takes the health-giving portions from the air he breathes. The subject-matter of the Second Reader has been drawn from the various fields of thought and action which especially interest children. Care has been taken to have the ideas embodied in the subject-matter of sufficient variety to assist children to interpret nature and life as exemplified in their daily environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life in Tale and Fable: A Second Reader A taste for good reading is an essential part of an education. To develop this taste, while helping the child to learn to read, this book has been prepared. It is important, in the beginning, that the child should like What he reads, and that the lessons should not be so difficult as to mar his pleasure in reading. For this reason great care has been taken to make attractive lessons, Within the child's ability to read and understand. The stories, as the name of the book suggests, have been carefully selected from the legends, tales, and fables, which, by their genuineness and truth to life, have come to form a literature for children. The longer selections have been divided into parts of sufficient length for one lesson. By doing this it has been possible to introduce versions and adaptations of tales of real classical value. The more difficult words are placed at the head of the lessons, and are marked for pronunciation. A key to these marks is given and should be carefully studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eaton Readers: Second Reader The Second of the Eaton Readers is designed to furnish the child with reading matter adapted to the different seasons of the year and the holidays. A marked feature is the number of lessons referring to Special Days. The great festivals of the year, the days set apart for the promotion of patriotism and the birthdays of our country's most noted men are emphasized by stories, descriptions and poems. Stories, both old and new, furnish variety and awaken interest. The pleasures and experiences of the four children with whom the little readers of the First Reader have become acquainted appeal to the universal interest in a continued narrative. These stories of happy child life suggest amusements and games for the home and present in a natural manner the ethical ideas of kindness and unselfish giving. This book, like the first book of the same series, is written in accordance with the belief that a child's reading should increase his observation and love of nature as well as awaken a love for books. Both directly and indirectly many of the lessons supplement nature study and suggest appropriate language exercises. To the authors and publishers who have kindly granted the use of their beautiful selections, most grateful acknowledgments are rendered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Road to Reading Second Reader In this, the third book of the Easy Road to Reading series, the leading characteristic is the longer story, subdivided into convenient lesson units. The child ready to enter the Second Reader is now old enough to sustain interest for a longer time and to enjoy the working' out of a very simple plot. To this end, a few longer stories have been used, rather than many short stories of little point or interest. These have been varied by the introduction of short poems that are worth while - worth reading and worth remembering. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stepping Stones to Literature: A Second Reader HE lessons contained in this book are a product of experience in the schoolroom. They go forth in the hope of rendering some service to teachers and to children alike. Throughout the work, the child's point of view has been kept in mind as well as the teacher's; and the aim has been to prepare, first of all, a book which children will like to read. Every lesson centers about something in which children are interested. All teachers know that the labor of teaching is lessened when the interest of the pupils is assured. The name of the Series testifies to another aim of the book, - to lead to a love of literature. Many of the stories and poems herein contained will be found again and again by the children in the world's best books. A taste for good things, developed now, will lead the pupils to demand good things when free to choose. The value of these lessons will be greatly enhanced if the teacher reads to the children, in connection with the lessons, such selections as are suggested by the text. Many of Long fellow's poems, for example, should be read, and some should be committed to memory, after the lesson on Longfellow. It is hoped that many of the poems will be memorized as well as read by the children. Thus the words, as well as the thought, become their possession. Nearly every lesson suggests language lessons, which the skillful teacher will readily plan in connection with the reading. For example, a study of the turtle would naturally follow the lesson on Jack and Joe. The pictures, as well as the lessons, have been carefully prepared or selected with reference to accepted standards and to the children's tastes. They should be studied until some appreciation of their meaning is gained. Artists' names should become as familiar to the children as are the names of poets. Many forms of study have been indicated. The word study should demand thought, and result in added power to do in dependent work. The language lessons, rhyming exercises, and questions will help to form the habit of study. Attention is called to the script lessons, which present beautiful forms, as well as beautiful thoughts, for copying. They thus possess a double advantage for seat work. It assumes that they can read the usual vocabulary of a good primer, either of this series or of any other. It is, however, closely related to the American School Primer. The children and their pets, whose acquaintance was made in that book, appear again here, with new experiences, in the earlier pages. But the keynote of the book is children's lore. The characters of the primer appear less and less frequently and finally drop out altogether. The latter part of the book contains children's literature only. The authors believe that this literature is of so excel lent a quality that it will intensify the interest of chil dren in the reading book, and hence in learning to read, and will also implant the seeds of good literary taste. Carefully organized lists of words for phonic drill are given on pages 135 - 137. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
