Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war of the three realms begins here… In the heart of the Samtoy Nation during the pre-colonial era of Philippine history, the world of Filipino heroes, deities and mythological monsters collide in an ambitious re-telling of a classic Filipino epic. Our story begins with Namongan, a healer and midwife from an isolated village in the Ilocos Region who discovers that she is destined to bear a child blessed by the Poon deities. This child is Lam-ang and he is the first Lakandian. Maturing at a rate unheard of amongst mere mortals, Lam-ang also possesses the strength of a hundred men and was trained to be the greatest warrior for good the mortal realm has ever seen. Together with Mangmankik, an anito spirit assigned to look after him by the Poons, Lam-ang sets out on a quest to find the missing pieces of the Gayaman Amulet and rescue his father who was abducted by the insidious night creatures on the night that he was born. This book covers the first half of the life of Lam-ang, derived from the Ilocano epic Biag ni Lam-ang. The story follows the adventures of our hero as he uncovers the truth about himself as well as the truth about his role in the war between the forces of good and evil that threatens not just the fate of the world of men but all the realms of the spirit world as well.

Book Synopsis The Children of China's Great Migration by : Rachel Murphy
Download or read book The Children of China's Great Migration written by Rachel Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In China in 2018 over 200 million rural migrants worked away from their home villages, fuelling the country's rapid economic boom. In the 2010s over sixty-one million rural children had at least one parent who had migrated without them, while nearly half had been left behind by both parents. Rachel Murphy draws on her longitudinal fieldwork in two landlocked provinces to explore the experiences of these left-behind children and to examine the impact of this great migration on childhood in China and on family relationships. Using children's voices, she provides a multi-faceted insight into experiences of parental migration, study pressures, poverty, institutional discrimination, patrilineal family culture, and reconfigured gendered and intergenerational relationships.

Download or read book Children's Transitions in Everyday Life and Institutions written by Mariane Hedegaard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a team of international contributors and featuring case studies from a range of educational settings in Australia, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, and the USA, this edited book is the first in the field of early childhood and youth studies to draw on Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory to give insights into transitions in childhood, what they are and how they are differently experienced. Transitions are explored holistically so the chapters not only focus on the person transitioning but also the institutions in which the person is transitioning from and to, with a focus on schools and daycare. The contributors look at how societal values and policies impact these transitions and comparison are drawn between international settings. The book includes chapters on expatriate families, immigrant children, home-school transitions, the role of play and communities. Through interviews, case studies and the analysis of empirical material from fieldwork, Children's Transitions in Everyday Life and Institutions reflects on the best ways to engage children so that they may emerge as competent actors in their new settings and transition well.

Book Synopsis Tribes Education and Gender Question by : Sanjay K. Roy
Download or read book Tribes Education and Gender Question written by Sanjay K. Roy and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite 58 years experimentation with the policy of protective discrimination and planned development a large majority of the 80.2 million tribal people languish in abject poverty, landlessness, powerlessness, illiteracy and malnutrition. Being caught in the hangover of the strong patriarchic tradition the women of nearly 700 marginalized tribal communities find themselves highly exploited, subjugated and voiceless. The present book, first of its kind on tribes living in northern districts of West Bengal (popularly known as North Bengal), explores the areas of subjugation of tribal life and particularly that of the tribal women and analytically presents the case of tribal women in a tea garden locale in the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district. The focus of the study has been education, i.e. how the tribes in general and tribal women in particular are doing in the field of education. The field of education is chosen because it is generally considered the most important force of empowerment, enlightenment and social transformation and because it provides us with a field to explore the areas of gender discrimination subsumed in tribal patriarchy. The book has approached the problem of tribal education and the gender question in education against the backdrop of the dialectics of dominant-subordinate relationship between the state and the dominant society on the one hand and the marginalized tribes on the other. The uniqueness of the book lies in its critical approach to the state-sponsored development strategies and its emphasis on a ‘cultural approach’ for a better understanding of the problem and for working out alternative development strategies for improving the educational status of the tribal communities. Sanjay K. Roy, Reader, Department of Sociology, North Bengal University, West Bengal, had his Ph. D. from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University, and pursued post-Doctoral research at the University of Sussex (UK) and University of Wollongong (Australia). Dr Roy has edited a volume on Refugees and Human Rights (2001) and contributed a good number of research papers to the leading journals, volumes and to national and international seminars/workshops. His areas of interest include sociological theories, urban poor, refugee studies, political sociology and gender studies. Dr Roy has completed a number of research projects; the latest being Gender Profile of Tribes of North Bengal, which has been carried out for the Centre for Women’s Studies, North Bengal University.
