Furthermore, even though data shows a slight increase in Chicana/o doctorate production, these gains are small in relation to the dramatic population growth of Chicana/os in the U.S. from 1990 to 2000 (U.S. Bureau of the Census 2000). In considering this issue, the authors examine a distinct feature of Chicana/o doctorate production: nearly one-fourth of Chicana/o doctorates first attended a community college, more than two times the overall rate for all doctorates. In fact, studies show that about two-thirds of all Latina/o students begin their postsecondary career in community colleges (Ornelas 2002; Ornelas & Solorzano 2004). Indeed, community colleges have long provided three primary functions: (1) vocational education/certificate programs; (2) terminal Associate of Art/Science degrees; and (3) transfer opportunities to four-year institutions. Even though 71% of Latina/o students who enter a community college desire to transfer to a four-year institution, only 7% to 20% end up doing so (U.S. Department of Education 2001). Of the three, the transfer function best prepares students to continue on to four-year colleges with the possibility of then continuing on to graduate and professional school. This report is a first attempt to shed some light on this little-known path to graduate school for Chicana and Chicano students. (Contains 5 figures.) Chicanas' educational experiences in academia can provide a qualitative glimpse of the larger trends on college campuses across the United States. I explore the question: How have race, class, and gender inequalities shaped my experience as a Chicana graduate student? I use the method of testimonio to analyze my own experiences in graduate school while attending California State University, Sacramento. This narrative approach can inform and contribute to quantitative and qualitative research on Chicanas' graduate school experiences that analyze the effects of race, gender, and class inequities in higher education. Although testimonio is not a common research method in sociology, testimonio is a critical Latin American oral tradition that is a source of knowledge, empowerment, and political truth. This study employs the qualitative approach of testimonio to explain my graduate school experiences, and the data collected comes from documented and undocumented memories. I relate my primary data with empirical studies and theoretical frameworks to analyze my graduate school experiences.

It chronicles the struggles and triumphs of five Mexican American students in their first year of college, aided by a one-year scholarship and support program called the College Assistance Migrant Program. CAMP, a federally funded program, is designed to help college students from migrant and/or economically disadvantaged families complete their first year of college. CAMP’s principal objective is to put students on a trajectory toward completion of a bachelor’s degree. Laura, Christina, Luz, Maria, and Ruben, as the author calls them, had daunting challenges: difficulties with English, extremely low self-confidence, teenage motherhood, conflict between gender roles and personal desires, and a history of gang membership. Focusing on the importance of constructing a new identity as a successful student, Reynaldo Reyes III shares with readers the experiences of these marginalized students. Their stories, coupled with perspectives from instructors, CAMP staff and counselors, and the author’s own observations, illustrate the influence of past schooling, the persistence of culture, and the tensions and challenges inherent in developing a new identity.
