Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The author deems it of sufiicient importance to add that it was designed to issue this edition, like the first, in the same handsome and rather costly form in which most of the works for children are now published. There is true philosophy in making books for children outwardly attractive, wrote the late Bishop Bowman when strongly recommending that this should not be forgotten even in the cheap edition. There is no doubt but that in being given a sensible importance, 8 book of this character would increase in spiritual influence. However, it has been thought best, in order to bring it within the reach of all, to diminish its size and cost by taking out the portions relating to the private Christian life of the child, and to readmit them in another issue to accompany this. For the same reason, although beauty of typography has been cared for, nearly all other ornament in printing and binding has been omitted. In its present form it goes before the Church for trial on its intrinsic merits alone, and may the blessing of God go with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School in Action: A Contribution to Some Phases of Religious Education, Especially for Parents, Pastors, and Sunday-School Workers Because of the increased interest and change of emphasis in Sunday-school work, I have for some time felt that I might, in a humble way, be helpful to parents, pastors, and Sunday-school workers, by putting into book form some information and practical suggestions, the result of experience, observation, and study. Some of these chapters have already appeared in Sunday-school publications and suggestive leaflets. I gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness to many different authors and writers and to all others who have in any way contributed toward making this book possible, particularly, the writer of the Introduction, my very dear friend and former teacher. Rev. W. O. Fries, D.D., now a member of the International Lesson Committee, and Editor of the Sunday-school literature of the United Brethren in Christ. As I pen these lines, I pause for a little while in silent communion with my Lord, the Great Teacher, and ask him, by his spirit of wisdom and power to bless these pages that they might inspire all who read them to greater activity, a more intelligent and orderly leadership in the great and grand work of the Sunday school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Lessons in Sunday-School Science: A Manual for the Use of Normal Classes This little book is designed to help Sunday-school teachers who, feeling the need of aid along lines of study lying outside of the text-book which they teach, but which are no less necessary to be followed, are willing to put forth definite and systematic efforts in the direction Whither they lead. Briefly these lines of study lead to questions concerning the Sunday school itself as an institution, the scholar as an immor tal being with a destiny dependent upon character, the teacher as circumscribed and limited by the nature both of the school and (f the scholar, and the work it self, as conditioned upon certain fixed-laws, and aided by certain necessary adjuncts. Most of the matter which is here presented is doubtless not new. Its form, however, is new, and is the result of many years of teaching and of study in both secular and Sunday schools. For convenience' sake, the topics discussed have been arranged in ten lessons, with the thought that they would thus serve' for ten consecutive morn ing or afternoon sessions at any of our Sunday-school assemblies. A synopsis of'each lesson precedes the lesson itself. It is suggested that all students should thoroughly master these synopses, if not by actual memorizing, by Some other equivalent process. In. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday-School Movement: And the American Sunday-School Union This work was not written to order; it has been a growth. My researches into the origin and principles of the modern Sunday-school began as a college graduate student in a pioneer service, about 1854. These researches have continued for an exceptionally long period of personal observation and service, in about every form and phase of the institution in America and Europe. Rare opportunities were providentially offered for years, especially by becoming the custodian of probably the largest and choicest collection of first-hand documents and material relating to the origin and early development of the movement that is to be found anywhere in America or the world. It is significant that the greatest growth of the modern Sunday-school has not been where it started, but in America. The membership in the United States is easily double that of Great Britain, and equals that in all the other countries of the world. A mass of historical material has been examined in collections in libraries and historical societies in the United States and Great Britain, and the important facts sifted for the benefit of the reader. Legions of excellent works have been issued on phases of the institution and along various educational, denominational, and other lines. These fragmentary treatises have increased the demand for a general work giving a comprehensive view of the institution: (1) as a great laymen's movement, (2) as promoting a spirit of Christian unity for service, and (3) as a great missionary agency for the universal spread of the gospel of Christ - making it a remarkable phenomenon in the progress of Christianity. The modem Sunday-school was not new in its teaching, but was so new in form as to require a long campaign of education and a practical test of its value for a generation before it won the confidence of the public and of the churches. From the first, however, it was advocated by Christian laymen of different creeds, aided here and there by clergymen who had the grace to perceive, and the grit and greatness to declare, that Christ's kingdom was larger and more important than any one or a score of sects into which Protestantism had divided. Its success in any community depended upon uniting existing Christian forces in its support. The founders were forced, therefore, to seek a basis of unity in Christian service. They found it in declaring for a positive teaching of the essential truths of the Bible as held by all Christians, and in a neutral attitude on those doctrines upon which they differed. The majority of the modern Sunday-schools in the early days were formed on this basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
