Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Petroleum and Its Substitutes: A Practical Handbook It is impossible to read the excellent handbook on the Chemistry of Petroleum and its Substitutes, by Dr. C. K. Tinkler and Dr. F. Challenger, without being impressed with the scope which exists for the application of science in the treatment of petroleum. The conversion of the raw material into the various commercial products is ordinarily effected by rule-of-thumb processes devised without adequate preliminary study of the chemical nature of the hydrocarbons dealt with, and without recognition of the scientific principles by which the manufacturer should be guided. This has doubtless arisen from the abundance of the supply and the low cost of the raw material, from the facility with which products meeting the requirements of the consumer can be made, and in general from the manner in which the industry in petroleum has grown to its present vast dimensions. It is obvious, however, that these conditions afford no justification for wasteful, unscientific methods of procedure, especially in view of the circumstance that as our stores of petroleum are being rapidly depleted we are doing an injustice to our descendants in utilizing these stores otherwise than economically and to the best advantage. There is, happily, some evidence of increasing appreciation of the important help which science can afford in the refining of petroleum, and already there is a demand for highly-trained chemists in this branch of industry. Having regard to the large amount of British capital invested in petroleum enterprises, it is regrettable that it should be found necessary to seek abroad for men qualified for such positions. Book excerpt: With demand for petroleum products increasing worldwide, there is a tendency for existing refineries to seek new approaches to optimize efficiency and throughput. In addition, changes in product specifications due to environmental regulations greatly influence the development of petroleum refining technologies. These factors underlie the need for this fifth edition of The Chemistry and Technology of Petroleum, which continues in the tradition of the bestselling fourth edition, proving readers with a detailed overview of the chemistry and technology of petroleum as it evolves into the twenty-first century. The new edition has been updated with the latest developments in the refining industry, including new processes as well as updates on evolving processes and various environmental regulations. The book covers issues related to economics and future refineries, examines the changing character of refinery feedstock, and offers new discussions on environmental aspects of refining. It contains more than 300 figures and tables, including chemical structures and process flow sheets. A useful reference for scientists and engineers in the petroleum industry as well as in the catalyst manufacturing industry, this book introduces readers to the science and technology of petroleum, beginning with its formation in the ground and culminating in the production of a wide variety of products and petrochemical intermediates.
Book Synopsis Process Chemistry of Petroleum Macromolecules by : Irwin A. Wiehe
Download or read book Process Chemistry of Petroleum Macromolecules written by Irwin A. Wiehe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-06-20 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is a shortage of light petroleum, there is plenty of heavy petroleum rich in macromolecules available, creating an increasing interest for processes that can convert heavy oils to light oils. Process Chemistry of Petroleum Macromolecules provides the scientific basis for such processes, presenting methods to determine improvement potential. Topics include characterization, thermal kinetics, phase behavior, and separation. Revealing that the science of petroleum macromolecules is simpler and more exciting than imagined, it also discusses macromolecules that self-associate, liquid crystalline phases, reactions triggered by phase separation, and both dispersed and dissolved solutes.
