Book Synopsis Organic Acids in Man by : R. Chalmers
Download or read book Organic Acids in Man written by R. Chalmers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing of this book was prompted by the need for a comprehensive of current data on organic acids suitable for both newcomers and collection established researchers in this field. The only previous text of the kind was the excellent review by Nordmann and Nordmann (1961), and at that time the main method of analysis was paper chromatography with liquid chromatography being used in a limited way. Only three diseases in which organic acids accumulate were known (primary hyperoxaluria, phenylketonuria and alcaptonuria). Since then, with the development of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and the further development ofliquid chromatography, knowledge concerning the nature of the organic acids in physiological fluids has been greatly extended. At the same time, the number of organic acidurias has increased dramatically, there being now some 40-50 known diseases of this type. During the past 15 years or so, there have been several reviews, dealing with either specific diseases or groups of diseases (Gompertz, 1972, 1974; Tanaka, 1975), or presenting the proceedings of symposia (Stern and Toothill, 1972) or workshops (Marner et al. , 1974). This present text deals comprehensively and in detail with the organic acids in human physiological fluids in health and in disease states, and is particularly concerned with the methods necessary for their separation, determination and indentification.
Book Synopsis Hypervalent Iodine in Organic Synthesis by : A. Varvoglis
Download or read book Hypervalent Iodine in Organic Synthesis written by A. Varvoglis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1996-11-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fascinating chemistry of the many kinds of organic compounds of hypervalent iodine. Each chapter deals with a particular iodine compound or families of compounds which have been used as reagents in a plethora of useful transformations. These include assorted oxidation, such as with the precious Dess-Martin reagent as well as with a wide range of further reactions. Prominent features of hypervalent iodine reagents derived from iodobenzene are: ready availability, operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and high efficiency. They are environmentally safe and can be recycled. New species may be easily prepared by introducing substituents in the benzene ring or changing the ligand attached to iodine. Their combination with other reagents broadens considerably their synthetic potential. Today, no synthetic chemist can afford to ignore the valuable hypervalentiodine reagents. Features up-to-date coverage of a wide range of topics Includes many tables featuring a diversity of reactivity, and a comprehensive index Acts as a comprehensive, up-to-date reference on all aspects of hypervalent iodine chemistry Contains a section on unusual efficiency of hypervalent iodine reactions
Book Synopsis Detection and Identification of Organic Compounds by : Miroslov Vecera
Download or read book Detection and Identification of Organic Compounds written by Miroslov Vecera and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American edition of our monograph is not a mere translation of the Czech edition, which appeared some five years ago. We have had to respect the fact that even such a short period has sufficed for progress in this field, and that the field of application of methods of organic analysis has widened. We have therefore revised a number of chapters in Part 1, the general part of the monograph-mainly those devoted to chromatographic methods, which have been extended and complemented by methods of thin-layer chromatography and electrophoresis. The chapters on the theory of color reactions and on analytical literature have also been extended; the chapter on spectral methods has been extended by including the use of proton magnetic resonance in organic analysis, and the list of references has been enlarged by adding books of importance for organic analysis. In Part 2, the part dealing specifically with various elements and chemical groups, we have extended the chapters on solubility and on acids and bases. The methods for the detection and identification of given classes of compounds have also been supplemented by references to recent papers.

Book Synopsis Lead: Its Effects on Environment and Health by : Astrid Sigel
Download or read book Lead: Its Effects on Environment and Health written by Astrid Sigel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 17, entitled Lead: Its Effects on Environment and Health of the series Metal Ions in Life Sciences centers on the interrelations between biosystems and lead. The book provides an up-to-date review of the bioinorganic chemistry of this metal and its ions; it covers the biogeochemistry of lead, its use (not only as gasoline additive) and anthropogenic release into the environment, its cycling and speciation in the atmosphere, in waters, soils, and sediments, and also in mammalian organs. The analytical tools to determine and to quantify this toxic element in blood, saliva, urine, hair, etc. are described. The properties of lead(II) complexes formed with amino acids, peptides, proteins (including metallothioneins), nucleobases, nucleotides, nucleic acids, and other ligands of biological relevance are summarized for the solid state and for aqueous solutions as well. All this is important for obtaining a coherent picture on the properties of lead, its effects on plants and toxic actions on mammalian organs. This and more is treated in an authoritative and timely manner in the 16 stimulating chapters of Volume 17, which are written by 36 internationally recognized experts from 13 nations. The impact of this recently again vibrant research area is manifested in nearly 2000 references, over 50 tables and more than 100 illustrations (half in color). Lead: Its Effects on Environment and Health is an essential resource for scientists working in the wide range from material sciences, inorganic biochemistry all the way through to medicine including the clinic ... not forgetting that it also provides excellent information for teaching.
Book Synopsis The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates by : Jiří Starý
Download or read book The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates written by Jiří Starý and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates is a comprehensive account of the solvent extraction (liquid-liquid extraction) of metal chelate complexes. Topics covered include the composition and stability of metal chelates; analytical applications of the solvent extraction of metal chelates; and selective extraction procedures for metals. A theoretical treatment of the solvent extraction of metal chelates is also given. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins with an overview of solvent extraction and how it can be used to solve important theoretical problems concerning the composition and stability of soluble and insoluble metal complexes. The next chapter examines the composition and stability of metal chelates based on the assumption that only uncharged complexes are dissolved and extracted by the organic solvents. A theory of the solvent extraction of metal chelates is then described, paying particular attention to a variety of factors that influence the extraction of metal chelates, including acidity, solubility and instability of the metal chelate, and organic solvent. Some analytical applications of the solvent extraction of metal chelates are also considered. The last two chapters deal with systems and selective extraction procedures for metals. This monograph will be of particular value to inorganic and analytical chemists.
