The ambiguity of human existence should lead us not to arrogance but to humility. We must do the best we can with the terrible choices before us. But no nation, not even Sweden with its amazing self-righteousness in international affairs, can afford the luxury of waiting for the absolutely right decision. There isn't any. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 25: March-April, 1968 Most people now think of war as a man-made evil contrary to God's will. The ancients had the reverse View; they believed that war was God's will. Conscience operated in the opposite direction to our own, with the result that when men had vindictive and bestial impulses it was because the deity meant them to do the things these impulses resulted in. The ancient soldier (whose morale problems were rendered far more acute by primitive conditions) tended to unleash all his frustrations and fears in a savage violence spurred by the belief he was doing the deity's work. Great imperial cities such as Boghazkoy, Nineveh, Babylon, could disappear and remain undiscovered for centuries, but a Hiroshima now rises again quickly. I would rather take my chances with a nuclear icbm any day in the week than with an Assyrian conqueror. Not even our two global wars of this century can quite equal the ferocity of ancient hordes coming down like the wolf on the fold, burning, torturing, killing, utterly obliterating everything in the way. Our own Old Testament has horrifying re ections of that spirit in such passages as Joshua or the last verse of Psalm 137. Book excerpt: Essays on morality, mortality, and much more from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion. This early collection of essays from renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins is an enthusiastic declaration, a testament to the power of rigorous scientific examination to reveal the wonders of the world. In these essays, Dawkins revisits the meme, the unit of cultural information that he named and wrote about in his groundbreaking work, The Selfish Gene. Here also are moving tributes to friends and colleagues, including a eulogy for novelist Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy; correspondence with fellow biologist Stephen Jay Gould; commentary on the events of 9/11; and visits with the famed paleoanthropologists Richard and Meave Leakey at their African wildlife preserve. Ending with a vivid note to Dawkins’s ten-year-old daughter, reminding her to remain curious, ask questions, and live the examined life, A Devil’s Chaplain is a fascinating read by “a man of firm opinions, which he expresses with clarity and punch” (Scientific American).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging collection presents thirty essays by Muslim chaplains reflecting on their experiences as spiritual caregivers. Through their first-hand accounts, they impart how they skillfully apply the mercy and compassion of the Prophet Muhammad to the people in their care. They also share how their faith informs their service, how they navigate the obstacles of a predominantly Christian profession, and how they administer to the spiritual needs of people of different faiths or of no faith at all. Working in a variety of settings—including hospitals, prisons, universities, and the armed forces—Muslim chaplains encounter unique challenges on a daily basis, requiring them to call upon the resources of their Islamic faith with wisdom and tenderness. The contributors to this volume explore these circumstances vividly and honestly. Their personal stories are instructive of how Islamic principles can be employed with spiritual insight to bring strength and comfort to the sick and suffering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of religion in public life continues to be a much-debated topic in Western nations. This book charts the changing role of hospital chaplains and examines through detailed case studies the realities of practice and the political debates which either threaten or sustain the service. This second edition includes a new introduction and updated material throughout to present fresh insights and research about chaplaincy, including in relation to New Atheism and the developing debate about secularism and religion in public life. Swift concludes that chaplains must do more to communicate the value of what they bring to the bedside.
