Book excerpt: Michigan is truly a "Great Lake State": the two peninsulas, many islands, and 3,100 miles of shoreline on four of the Great Lakes give the state a unique location and a diverse physical environment. The natural landscape is largely the result of erosion and deposition of surface materials during the Great Ice Age. Glacial ridges alternate with till plains and lake bottoms to give Michigan a varied topography and great contrasts in soil fertility. The book, through the use of text, photographs, and maps (drawn especially for this volume by Sherman Hollander), stresses the relationships between this varied natural resource base and the economic, social, and political geography of Michigan. Emphasis is placed on the demographic character, the historical background, and the natural and human resources that have led to Michigan becoming one of the principal manufacturing states in the United States. The book also looks at agriculture and recreation and tourism, which, along with manufacturing, are the major bases of the state's economic development. The regional coverage focuses on the urban dominance of Detroit. This comprehensive overview of Michigan geography closes with an analysis of some of the major quality of life issues in the state and a short glimpse into the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reverend Dominik Kolasiński (1838-1898) left Detroit an enduring legacy in St. Albertus's and Sweetest Heart of Mary's, two of the city's most magnificent churches, but his ecclesiastical career was turbulent and controversial. Because he believed that he had been unjustly suspended as a pastor of St. Albertus's, Kolasiński undertook a successful struggle for vindication and reinstatement which caused almost a decade of turmoil in the Polish immigrant community. Loved by many and despised by some, Father Kolasiński through his activities focused public attention on the new Polish Americans and their way of life, as well as on the sometimes strained relationship between the Polish Roman Catholic parishes and the non-Polish diocesan authorities. Lawrence D. Orton, making extensive use of the accounts in contemporary newspapers, tells the story of what came to be known as the Kolansiński Affair with insight and objectivity. He also includes a detialed survey of the beginnings, expansion, and consolidation of Detroit's Polish community in the nineteenth century, paying particular attention to the attitudes and perceptions of "native" Detroiters. His study attests to the peasant immigrants' efforts to maintain their own traditions in an urban and sometimes hostile environment and to their establishment of religious and cultural institutions that facilitated their adjustment to their new lives. Profusely illustrated with contemporary drawings, photographs, and a map of the nineteenth-century Polish quarter, this volume makes a substantial contribution both to the history of Detroit and to the history of Poles in the United States. -- from dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last, rootless decade families, neighborhoods, and communities have disintegrated in the face of gripping social, economic, and technological changes. Th is process has had mixed results. On the positive side, it has produced a mobile, volatile, and dynamic society in the United States that is perhaps more open, just, and creative than ever before. On the negative side, it has dissolved the glue that bound our society together and has destroyed many of the myths, symbols, values, and beliefs that provided social direction and purpose. In A History of the Polish Americans, John J. Bukowczyk provides a thorough account of the Polish experience in America and how some cultural bonds loosened, as well as the ways in which others persisted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some music styles gain mass popularity while others thrive in small niches? Banding Together explores this question and reveals the attributes that together explain the growth of twentieth-century American popular music. Drawing on a vast array of examples from sixty musical styles--ranging from rap and bluegrass to death metal and South Texas polka, and including several created outside the United States--Jennifer Lena uncovers the shared grammar that allows us to understand the cultural language and evolution of popular music. What are the common economic, organizational, ideological, and aesthetic traits among contemporary genres? Do genres follow patterns in their development? Lena discovers four dominant forms--Avant-garde, Scene-based, Industry-based, and Traditionalist--and two dominant trajectories that describe how American pop music genres develop. Outside the United States there exists a fifth form: the Government-purposed genre, which she examines in the music of China, Serbia, Nigeria, and Chile. Offering a rare analysis of how music communities operate, she looks at the shared obstacles and opportunities creative people face and reveals the ways in which people collaborate around ideas, artworks, individuals, and organizations that support their work.

Cooper charts the course of competition, conflict, and camaraderie among American cigar makers during the two decades that preceded mechanization of their work. In the process, she reconstructs the work culture, traditions, and daily lives of the male cigar makers who were members of the Cigar Makers' International Union of America (CMIU) and of the nonunion women who made cigars under a division of labor called the "team system." But Cooper not only examines the work lives of these men and women, she also analyzes their relationship to each other and to their employers during these critical years of the industry's transition from hand craft to mass production."
