Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

They controlled a vast colonial empire that stretched across the Americas and the Pacific, and held considerable territories in Europe, centring on the so-called 'Spanish Road'. The Dutch War of Independence (also known as the 80 Years' War) was a major challenge to their dominance. The Dutch army created by Maurice of Nassau used innovative new tactics and training to take the fight to Spain and in so doing created a model that would be followed by European armies for generations to come. The second in a two-part series on the Dutch armies of the 80 Years' War, focuses on the cavalry, artillery and engineers of the evolving armies created by Maurice of Nassau. Using specially commissioned artwork and photographs of historical artefacts, it shows how the Dutch cavalry arm, artillery, and conduct of siege warfare contributed to the long struggle against the might of the Spanish Empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dagomar Degroot offers the first detailed analysis of how a society thrived amid the Little Ice Age, a period of climatic cooling that reached its chilliest point between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The precocious economy, unusual environment, and dynamic intellectual culture of the Dutch Republic in its seventeenth-century Golden Age allowed it to thrive as neighboring societies unraveled in the face of extremes in temperature and precipitation. By tracing the occasionally counterintuitive manifestations of climate change from global to local scales, Degroot finds that the Little Ice Age presented not only challenges for Dutch citizens but also opportunities that they aggressively exploited in conducting commerce, waging war, and creating culture. The overall success of their Republic in coping with climate change offers lessons that we would be wise to heed today, as we confront the growing crisis of global warming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the 2009 Copenhagen climate conference, it became evident that no discernible global warming had occurred since 1998, despite a significant increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Consequently, the catastrophic man-made global warming hypothesis of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was conveniently rebranded as climate change. This book allows readers, with little or no understanding of the issues behind the climate change debate, to obtain an appreciation as to why so much doubt and suspicion has been cast over the IPCC and its gold standard climate science (IPCC Fourth Assessment Report) often referred to as the settled science backed by a consensus of scientists. This book reveals that what the public has been led to believe about man-made global warming alarmism, and about the IPCC, often is misleading or just plain wrong, and that the IPCCs climate alarmism is not actually backed by science but rather by shonky predictions from unreliable computer models. It also makes it evident that man-made global warming alarmism has been driven largely by politics and environmentalism using any means possible to justify action to halt catastrophic man-made global warming (climate change) warming that has not, in fact, been happening. This book will leave the reader better informed about the IPCC and its climate alarmism, and about carbon dioxide, the temperature data, climate model predictions and misleading claims, as well as about the efforts of sceptics in revealing why the hypothesis of the IPCC, and its alarmist claims, are not valid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shift in moral standards across the world has changed dramatically in the last eighty years. The shift has not been good for society, and the influence of Satan has grown. Once a God-fearing and loving society, we are now a God-ignoring and self-satisfying nation. The Ten Commandments, once considered vital, are now treated as less than ten suggestions. We have moved so far away from a God-centered world that I suspect He will do something dramatic to regain our attention. We have probably passed the point of no return in our relationship with our Creator. Mary and many Saints have warned that we need to return to Him, and I believe that only some divine intervention will bring us home to Him. My children and grandchildren didn't have the religious education we had. Most of them can't answer the question, "Why did God make you?" So I am asking you who had a solid religious education and belief to share that education with the young people. I have taken on the job of praying my children and grandchildren into heaven. If you agree, please join me. Ask the Father in Jesus's name to bring us home for eternity. Live and share the reason God made you. Tell the children what you learned; to know Him, to love Him, and serve Him. This is the purpose of our existence. Share it with the ones we love deeply. We live in His world. No matter what man tries to do, He is still, and always will be, in charge. In my judgment, the only power strong enough to coordinate all the confusion we've seen in the world today is Satanic power. Satan is constantly on the attack, but we have the power on our side to overcome his influence. In the end, Jesus will triumph coming in glory. His love and mercy is endless and will be shared by those who make an effort to do the will of the Father. The sisters taught us about the sacraments. Talk to your children and grandchildren about them. Encourage them to go to confession and to attend mass, and God will take care of them. Don't be afraid. He put us here and now for a reason, and I believe the reason is for us to help each other to know, love, and serve Him. Let's pray them into heaven with us. It has been two years getting this book to print. The changes in the world condition over that time has deteriorated significantly. Knowing the reason of our existence has become even more crucial than it was two years ago. The Russians have invaded Ukraine, and their action threatens world safety. Mary warned us of this threat over one hundred years ago. We are past time in listening to her words of warning. This week in March 2022, the Ukrainian bishops are pleading with the Pope to consecrate Russia to Mary. While we wait to see how the world situation unfolds, we might renew our own consecration to Mary and to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The world is praying for peace. I believe it is time to do more than to ask God for favors. It is time, past time, to add actions to our prayers taking Tom's example by the practice of fasting and other forms of self-sacrifice. I need to stop asking and to start doing. He doesn't need my sacrifice, but He loves my surrender. I witnessed a beautiful sign on the first Friday of March. The morning mass usually has thirty-five or so attendees. On this last first Friday, there were over 120. People are responding to Mary's call. If you haven't joined her yet, please do for your benefit, your children's benefit, and for the salvation of the world. Thank you again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twelve Years Truce of 9 April 1609 made a temporary end to the hostilities between Spain and the Northern Netherlands that had lasted for over four decades. The Truce signified a crucial step in the recognition of the Republic of the Northern Netherlands as a sovereign power. As the direct source of inspiration for the 1648 Peace of Munster the Truce is a crucial text in the formation of the early modern law of nations. As few other texts, it reflects the radical changes to the laws of war and peace from around 1600. The Twelve Years Truce offers a collection of essays by leading specialists on the diplomatic and legal history of the Antwerp Truce of 1609. The first part covers the negotiation process leading up to the Truce. The second part collects essays on the consequences of the Truce on the state of war. In the third part, the consequences of the Truce for the sovereignty of the Northern and Southern Netherlands as well as it wider significance for the changing laws of war and peace of the age are scrutinised.

The author identifies an emphasis on the quality of the product rather than strict adherence to stylistic norms and suggests that higher household incomes and the increased availability of commercial textiles have led to fewer individuals practising this art.
