We are created to speak, and we can both speak up for ourselves and speak out on behalf of others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful book, Walter Brueggemann moves the discussion of Old Testament theology beyond the dominant models of previous generations. Brueggemann focuses on the metaphor and imagery of the courtroom trial in order to regard the theological substance of the Old Testament as a series of claims asserted for Yahweh, the God of Israel. This provides a context that attends to pluralism in every dimension of the interpretive process and suggests links to the plurality of voices of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koreans are one of the fastest-growing visible minority groups in Canada today. However, very few studies of their experiences in Canada or their paths of integration are available to public and academic communities. Korean Immigrants in Canada provides the first scholarly collection of papers on Korean immigrants and their offspring from interdisciplinary, social scientific perspectives. The contributors explore the historical, psychological, social, and economic dimensions of Korean migration, settlement, and integration across the country. A variety of important topics are covered, including the demographic profile of Korean-Canadians, immigrant entrepreneurship, mental health and stress, elder care, language maintenance, and the experiences of students and the second generation. Readers will find interconnecting themes and synthesized findings throughout the chapters. Most importantly, this collection serves as a platform for future research on Koreans in Canada.

Book excerpt: Korean North American women live with a legacy of severe oppression, which has been passed down through generations. In Korea, women suffered under prevailing religious beliefs and cultural practices. When they immigrated to North America, they remained dominated and subordinated, due to barriers such as racism, classism, and sexism. Grace Ji-Sun Kim asks, what is the "good news" for these women, and how can they come to understand God is with them? Kim's visionary work is also a pioneering effort -- Korean North American women's theology is in an early stage of development and she is one of only a few Korean North American women theologians. Kim exposes an additional layer of oppression for Korean North American women -- an accumulation of han. She characterizes han as a prevalent sense of unresolved resentment against injustice suffered and a sense of helplessness because of the overwhelming odds against them. The Grace of Sophia proposes that linking Jesus with Sophia can be a meaningful way of portraying Christ to Korean North American women. The biblical figure Sophia, understood in conjunction with wisdom elements of Asian religious tradition, will offer a liberating and healing Christology for these women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different ethical situations require different homiletical responses. John McClure organizes recent literature on ethics and preaching into four ethical approaches. Does your situation require public moral leadership? Then a communicative ethic is best. Does your situation require the development of countercultural moral character? Then a witness ethic is best. Does your situation require ethical consciousness-raising and organizing for social justice? Then a liberationist ethic is best. Does your situation require genuine moral conversation and the discernment of shared commitments in spite of our differences? Then a hospitality ethic is best. Each ethical approach is briefly and carefully explored, correlated with appropriate contexts and situations, and demonstrated with model sermons. The result is a useful handbook for quickly discerning what ethical approach is needed, how to preach that approach, and what to expect as a result.

Among these people on the move are those who take up residence away from their place of origin-the "diaspora"-who are the focus of this study. This book is an interdisciplinary study on the 21st century demographic reality that led to the development of "diaspora missiology" as a new missiological paradigm, and the need to practice "diaspora missions" as a new mission strategy.

Book excerpt: Explores the possibilities and challenges of Asian immigrant Christian leadership in the United States. In A Postcolonial Leadership, Choi Hee An explores the interwoven relationship between Asian immigrant leadership in general and Asian immigrant Christian leadership in the United States. Using several current leadership theories, she analyzes the current landscape of US leadership and explores how Asian immigrant leaders, including Christian leaders, exercise leadership and confront challenges within this context. Drawing upon postcolonial theory and its analysis of power, Choi examines the multilayered dynamics of the Asian immigrant community and Christian congregations in their postcolonial contexts, and offers a new liberative interpretation of colonized history and culture in order to propose postcolonial leadership as a new leadership model for Asian immigrant leaders. “This book includes a wide variety of historical, contemporary, and cross-cultural understanding of leadership theories; in particular, it provides a unique understanding of the challenges and possibilities of Asian American leadership in immigrant communities and churches. Anyone interested in the topic will appreciate the depth and breadth that this work provides.” — Sangyil Sam Park, author of Korean Preaching, Han, and Narrative

Book excerpt: Troubling Jeremiah presents essays by Jeremiah scholars who are troubled by the biblical book and give the scholarship on Jeremiah trouble in turn. Essays seek to move beyond the Duhm-Mowinckel source criticism of the book to address matters of metaphor, final form, intertextuality, and the relationship of the book to various audiences of readers. Taken together, the 24 essays in this volume press for an end to 'innocent' readings of Jeremiah inasmuch as current models prove inadequate for troubling the very Jeremiah they have already helped to reveal.
