Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tumours of the Cerebellum This work is based on the careful analysis of a large number of record cases, all of which were proved to be cerebellar tumours, either by operation or postmortem examination. The anatomical notes are derived from the best English text-books, and those on physiology are the opinions of men distinguished in that science. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to the writings of, among others, Sir William Gowers, Drs. Ferrier and James Taylor. If my little effort in the way of book-writing is found to be of any service to students about to face the ordeal of their final professional examination, I shall have had my reward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology and Pathology of the Cerebellum T he first theory originated with Gall, and, though it met with great opposition when it was promulgated, and though it is still vigorously cqmbated, there is a good deal of evidence in its favor. Doubtless much of the odium in which it is held is due to the fact that numerous ignorant pretenders to science have embraced it. This, however, should not prevent us investigating its pretensions with fairness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. The whole of the Nervous System, including the sympathetic and peripheral nerves, as also various epithelia and structures, --are derived from the first of the three blastodermic layers, --theEpiblast, Mesoblast, and Hypoblast, with which the student of embryology has to become so familiarized. The principal reason why people who approach the study of the brain and its functions go away disappointed, discouraged, and appalled at the immensity of the subject, is because they allow themselves to be deluded in the first instance into a short but altogether wrong method of research. They begin at the wrong end and fondly hope they will be able to master the subject by taking somewhat of a retrospective view of its tenets, rather than a progressive one. Briefly, the Cerebellum may be described as consisting of two hemispheres or lobes connected centrally by elongated processes termed Versiform. In addition to such connection, there is that of the middle crus--the greater portion of the Pons Varolii being included in it. The remaining adjacent connections are the superior and inferior crura; the former, with theVieussens'Valve, forming a junction with it and the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy of the Brain and Spinal Cord This little book, first written whilst a student at the earnest request of students, has now reached a third edition, and has become a favourite, perhaps undeservedly, with those for whom it was originally intended. Although fully conscious of its many defects, I fear that my time, now so much occupied with teaching, leaves me no chance of remodelling the book in a way that more mature years and experience would suggest. It must practically remain in the same garb, however imperfect, in which it first appeared. This the student, at least, will probably not regret. In this edition my work has been confined to the removal of the more glaring blemishes and errors, and to the rewriting and bringing up to date some of the sections. As the book is now much used by senior students and by practitioners, a general summary, for their special use, has been added at the end.
