Book excerpt: Wang has gathered contributions from an impressive cohort of the world’s most respected experts on longhorned beetles. Chapters review both basics of cerambycid taxonomy, mor- phology, and behavior (feeding, reproduction, and chemical ecology), as well as more applied concerns, such as laboratory rearing, pest control, and bio- security. Overall, this volume is a valuable contribution to the literature as a "one-stop shop" for readers seeking a comprehensive overview of longhorned beetles... It represents a tremendous effort on the part of Wang and the authors, and has resulted in a much-needed update to the literature. This volume is the only work of its kind available at this time, and is a valuable addition to the library of any scientist studying wood-boring beetles. - Ann M. Ray, Biology, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio in The Quarterly Review of Biology, Volume 94, 2019 There are more than 36,000 described species in the family Cerambycidae in the world. With the significant increase of international trade in the recent decades, many cerambycid species have become major plant pests outside their natural distribution range, causing serious environmental problems at great cost. Cerambycid pests of field, vine, and tree crops and of forest and urban trees cost billions of dollars in production losses, damage to landscapes, and management expenditures worldwide. Cerambycidae of the World: Biology and Pest Management is the first comprehensive text dealing with all aspects of cerambycid beetles in a global context. It presents our current knowledge on the biology, classification, ecology, plant disease transmission, and biological, cultural, and chemical control tactics including biosecurity measures from across the world. Written by a team of global experts, this book provides an entrance to the scientific literature on Cerambycidae for scientists in research institutions, primary industries, and universities, and will serve as an essential reference for agricultural and quarantine professionals in governmental departments throughout the world.

This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longhorn Beetles — Cerambycidae are one of the most easily recognised groups of beetles, a family that worldwide encompasses over 33,000 species in 5,200 genera. With over 1,400 species classified in 300 genera, this is the sixth largest among 117 beetle families in Australia. These beetles often attack and kill living forest or orchard trees and develop in construction timber (like European House borer, introduced to WA), causing serious damages. Virtually all Cerambycidae feed on living or dead plant tissues and play a significant role in all terrestrial environments where plants are found. Larvae often utilise damaged or dead trees for their development, and through feeding on rotten wood form an important element of the saproxylic fauna, speeding energy circulation in these habitats. Many species are listed as quarantine pests because of their destructive role to the timber industry. This volume provides a general introduction to the Australian Cerambycidae with sections on biology, phylogeny and morphology of adult and larvae, followed by the keys to the subfamilies and an overview of the 74 genera of the subfamily Lamiinae occurring in Australia. All Lamiinae genera are diagnosed, described and illustrated and an illustrated key to their identification is provided. A full listing of all included Australian species with synonymies and bibliographic citations is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation In an isolated pine forest on the eastern edge of Central Texas, there lies an island of abundant and diversified life known as the Lost Pines, the western-most stand of the loblolly pine. This 100,000-acre island includes portions of Bastrop and Buescher state parks. It was here that Stephen Welton Taber and Scott B. Fleenor encountered insect life of astonishing diversity. Setting out to identify and describe the insects and related animals most readily observed in the Lost Pines, they also discovered some hidden, rare, and never-before-described species. The result is this book, a bestiary of more than 280 species of invertebrates including insects, millipedes, centipedes, spiders, scorpions, mollusks, and worms. Each species description includes common and scientific names; information on biology, distribution, and similar species; and the authors' special remarks. The next time you visit Bastrop State Park, turn over a few logs, look at the ants, and don't swat the flies. Take along this newguide and open up a world of life in one of Texas' most unique and popular landscapes.

Book excerpt: This work provides a hypothesis of evolutionary relationships within the Neotropical genus Sparganothina and between this genus and other lineages of Sparganothini (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Nineteen species are considered to belong to Sparganothina. Ten additional species are placed in "Sparganothina" and five in "Coelostathma" pending a better phylogenetic understanding of Coelostathma and related genera. Thirty species are described as new.

Covering the period 1758 to 1995, it contains entries for approximately 8,000 publications on the taxonomy, evolution, and comparative biology of ants. Most of the literature citations have been carefully verified and precisely dated. An introductory chapter discusses the problems associated with dating a citation of taxonomic literature. A list of all serials cited (more than 1,300 titles) and their abbreviations accompanies the bibliography.

This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cladistic analysis based on internal male female reproductive characters and external characters is used to group exemplar taxa in the carabid tribe Platynini. A classification, key to genera in North America, and a key to species groups of Agonum in North America north of Mexico are presented. The Agonum extensicolle species group comprises seven species: A. cyanope (Bates); A. extimum Liebherr, n.sp.; A. parextimum Liebherr n. sp.; A. texanum (LeConte); A. extensicolle (Say); A. decorum (Say); A. elongatulum (Dejean). Analyses of infraspecific geographic variation show: 1 ) A. texanum is biometrically uniform over the center of its range whereas individuals from outlying populations deviate in several measurements; 2) A. extensicolle is a variable species, with clinal changes in biometry and color ocurring across its range; 3) A. decorum is polymorphic for color and setation, and clinally variable in biometric characters. Across the group, flight apparatus development is inversely correlated with the amount of genetic heterogeneity measured by starch-gel electrophoresis. Electrophoretic, qualitative morphological, and biometric data are used to estimate phylogenetic relationships in the A. extensicolle group. The electrophoretic and morphological data produce compatible estimates of phylogeny. The biometric data are incompatible with the other data and are judged less useful for estimation of affinities. Distributional data are utilized in conjunction with the proposed phylogeny to investigate speciation events in the group. The principal mechanism is allopatric speciation brought about by vicariance across the lowlands of southeastern Arizona; the Cochise filter barrier. A second pattern involves a peripheral isolate of Antillean stock diverging on the Florida peninsula. A third speciation event involves a habitat shift in which a lowland desert form produced a species which now inhabits the pine-oak zone in the Sierra Madre Occidental. The area-taxon relationships are compared with those in other groups. Based on an electrophoretic clock calibrated using data from Drosophila, the timing of the initial speciation event in the group is estimated at 6-12 million years b.p. Other speciation events occurred throughout the Pliocene and Pleistocene, with the most recent divergence of A. decorum and A. elongatulum estimated at less than two million years b.p.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most abundant and diverse organisms that inhabit our planet and are found in all the world’s forest ecosystems. Many feed and/or breed on parts of trees. Some perform important functions, such as pollination or break-down of dead vegetation. Others weaken, deform or kill trees, and compete with humans for the many goods and services that trees and forests provide. Forest Entomology: A Global Perspective examines forest insects in a global context and reviews their dynamics, interactions with humans and methods for monitoring and management of species that damage forests. Also provided are 235 profiles of forest insects, worldwide. A series of tables provides summaries of the distribution and hosts of many more species. Included are those that damage forests, others that are simply curiosities and some that are beneficial. This book is designed as a reference for students, practicing foresters and forest health specialists, especially for those who work internationally or are concerned with species that have the potential to expand their ranges via international trade, travel or environmental changes.
