Book excerpt: When well functioning national welfare states are put under pressure, also the tasks of civic society and citizens' mutual responsibility are being re-defined. Hence, the significance of the civic society organisations in one of the most successful and stable circumstances of welfare states - in Northern Europe - is of great interest. This publication gives a first comprehensive overview of existing research on civic society organisations in the area of welfare services in the five Nordic countries. Besides a comparative Nordic analysis, focussed national contributions are provided. Finally, leading European researchers connect the Nordic debate in to a stimulating European context. How far are the Nordic welfare traditions still of significance, since all welfare states are similarly challenged by the global market economy? Can welfare organisations provide opportunities even for the most vulnerable groups to achieve full citizenship?

This book was released on 2020-11-21 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a background of increasing inequality and a rising tide of nationalism and populism, this book raises concerns that curriculum is being shaped by powerful non-academic, non-accountable forces and that populism – and its manifestations – represent a grave challenge to learning. It explores the extent to which curriculum and learning methods in higher education should respond to this challenge. Using problem based learning as a case study it draws on crossdisciplinary studies to examine how regional, national and organizational perspectives emphasize different aspects of PBL. It questions whether PBL provides an effective response to external influences and a ‘populist’ highereducation agenda. In conclusion the book poses an uncomfortable question whether graduates reflect the external forces shaping curriculum and hence may be as vulnerable to populist rhetoric as non-graduates precisely because the curriculum and learning methods do not engage with the challenges. This book will appeal to scholars of problem based learning, as well as populism and therole of higher education in society.

Book excerpt: Global Themes and Local Variations in Organization and Management: Perspectives on Glocalization offers a broad exposition of the relations between the global and the local with regard to organizational and managerial ideas, practices, and forms. This edited volume forges ahead to capture the complexity of modern management and organization that results from the processes of glocalization. Universality is among the core underlying principles of the management of organizations, as well as of organization and management science itself. Yet, reality reveals enormous variation across social and cultural contexts. For instance, multinational corporations must adjust their management practices to adhere to national regulation and local standards; manufacturers and service providers routinely tailor their products to suit the local preferences of consumers; and non-profit organizations amend their advocacy agenda to appeal to local sentiments. The work assembled here goes beyond merely describing such patterns of variation and adaptation in organization and management; research and commentary engage directly with the tensions between homogeneity and heterogeneity, convergence and divergence, global and local. With contributions from leading scholars in the field of comparative organization studies, this collection offers a substantive contribution to the investigation of organization and management, as well as providing a valuable resource for students of organization studies, international business, and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presents twenty specially commissioned case studies of farmer participatory approaches to agricultural innovation initiated by NGOs in Asia. Beginning with a broad review of institutional activity at the grassroots, the authors set the case material within the context of NGO relations with the State and their contribution to democratisation and the consolidation of rural civil society. Specific questions are raised: how good/bad are NGOs at promoting technological innovation and addressing constraints to change in present agriculture?; how effective are NGOs at strengthening grassroots organizations? and how do/will donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the State? This title is part of a series on Non-Governmental Organizations co-ordinated by the Overseas Development Institute. To complete this comprehensive review and critique there are two other regional case study volumes on Africa and Latin America and an overview volume, Reluctant Partners?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cereals for Food and Beverages Recent Progress in Cereal Chemistry and Technology covers the proceedings of an international conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 13-17, 1979. It summarizes the chemistry and technology of the major cereals related to their usage in food and beverages. This book is organized into 28 chapters that focus on various cereals, including wheat, maize, barley, oats, rye, sorghum, rice, and millet. It briefly discusses a range of fluorescence methods for visualizing major grain reserves, and then outlines the advantages of the methods over conventional microscopy. Considerable chapters are devoted to the chemistry of wheat as related to water activity, particle analysis, dietary fiber, proteins, and properties in breadmaking. A chapter also covers the milling technology of wheat for bread and soft wheat production. Discussions on maize science include a protein concentrate, starch, and protein chemistry. Chapters on maize technology cover the progress in sugar production by enzymes from starch, germ products in baked foods, and utilization in brewing. Subsequent chapters on barley studies include its morphology and physiology in malting; proanthrocyanidin-free barley in beer; and the basic science of hordein. Chemistry and technology of oats are covered in two chapters, followed by chapters on sorghum, rice, millet, soy sauce production, and hydrolyzed vegetable proteins. This book will be a useful reference for students, scientists, technologists, and manufacturers who are involved in any facet of food and beverage production.
