Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first interpretive history of Central America by a Central American historian to be published in English. Anyone with an interest in current events in the region will find here an insightful and well-written guide to the history of its five national states—Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Traces of a common past invite us to make generalizations about the region, even to posit the idea of a Central American nation. But, as Hector Perez-Brignoli shows us, we can learn more from a comparative approach that establishes both the points of convergence and the separate paths taken by the five different countries of Central America. The author offers a concise overview of the region's history from the sixteenth century to the present, beginning with human and cultural geography in the first chapter and ending with the present crisis in the last. He deals with the fundamental themes and problems of the area: the characteristics of the colonial heritage, independence and the crisis of the Federal Republic, the formation of nation-states during the nineteenth century, and the development of export agriculture based on coffee and bananas. The narrative moves finally into the twentieth century to look at the growing impoverishment that multiplies inequalities and leads to the shipwreck of liberal democracy. The case of Costa Rica, exceptional in more ways than one, receives special attention.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Five Republics of Central America: Their Political and Economic Development and Their Relations With the United States This volume by Dr. Dana G. Munro on the history and economic conditions of the five Central American Republics was undertaken for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace as one of a series of studies intended to present similar conditions in others of the Latin American Republics. The general purpose of the studies is to acquaint our own people with conditions as interpreted by a student and critic from among ourselves, in order that we may get a better and more sympathetic understanding of the ideals and conditions of life of our Central and South American neighbors. It is our hope also that such presentation may be helpful to the peoples of these countries themselves as a sympathetic attempt by friends to understand them and to let them see how things appear through the eyes of friendly outsiders. Dr. Munro's volume is the result of several months of study on the ground. He traveled by all the usual means of locomotion through the countries he describes, getting his information, as far as possible, at first hand. His account may be relied on as a correct presentation of the life of the people as seen by an outsider. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central America constitutes a fascinating case study of the challenges, opportunities and characteristics of the process of transformation in today’s global economy. Comprised of a politically diverse range of societies, this region has long been of interest to students of economic development and political change. The Handbook of Central American Governance aims to describe and explain the manifold processes that are taking place in Central America that are altering patterns of social, political and economic governance, with particular focus on the impact of globalization and democratization. Containing sections on topics such as state and democracy, key political and social actors, inequality and social policy and international relations, in addition to in-depth studies on five key countries (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala), this text is composed of contributions from some of the leading scholars in the field. No other single volume studies the current characteristics of the region from a political, economic and social perspective or reviews recent research in such detail. As such, this handbook is of value to academics, students and researchers as well as to policy-makers and those with an interest in governance and political processes.
