Currently all detectors in the system are operating at or near design levels. The performance of the combined silicon system is excellent in the context of CDF tracking algorithms, and the first useful physics results from the innermost Layer 00 detector have been recently documented. Operational and monitoring efforts have also been strengthened to maintain silicon efficiency through the end of Run 2 at the Tevatron.

The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX-II) and Layer 00 will be fully replaced at the end of Run IIa. The Run IIb silicon tracker has a baseline design that safely achieves the required radiation tolerance by using single sided sensors that are actively cooled. The new Run IIb castellated layout contains more silicon surface area and has a more uniform radial distribution. It minimizes the number of hybrid and sensor varieties providing quick construction and assembly. The total mass in the tracking volume is reduced by eliminating unnecessary the passive material from the CDF volume.

The precision measurement of the track impact parameter will allow triggering on B hadron decay vertices and thus investigating important areas in the B sector, like CP violation and B{sub s} mixing. In this paper we briefly review the architecture and the tracking algorithms implemented in the SVT and we report on the performance of the system achieved in the early phase of CDF run II.

Book excerpt: The authors describe the operation and performance of the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX'), which replaced the CDF SVX detector for run lb of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The new features of the SVX' include AC coupled readout, Field OXide Field Effect Transistor (FOXFET) biasing and radiation hard front end electronics. The authors expect the detector to survive beyond the 100 pb[sup -1] of data taking anticipated for the present CDF physics run. Preliminary results from the collider data show that the detector has a resolution of about 12 [mu]m. This provides a powerful tool to do top and bottom physics.

Book excerpt: The CDF Run II silicon detector with its 8 layers of double- and single-sided silicon microstrip sensors and a total 722,432 readout channels is one of the largest silicon detector devices currently in use by a HEP experiment. We report our experience commissioning and operating this complex device during the first 4 years of Run II. As the luminosity delivered by the Tevatron increases, we have observed measurable effects of radiation damage in studies of charge collection and noise versus applied bias voltage at many different integrated luminosities. We discuss these studies and their impact on the expected lifetime of the detector.
