Book excerpt: The Cats Be Unemployed A Millennial’s Topsy-Turvy Chase for Gainful Employment; or, A Generation’s Catalog of Conundrums When we are young and un(der)employed, we may find ourselves in desperate or humorous situations trying to chase some cash. We become curious about ourselves and our society and question what it really means to be an “adult.” We begin to compare ourselves to others...or to cats: living back at home, sleeping all day, going crazy, not wearing pants, pawing at that mouse. We are always on the hunt. We are constantly put in boxes. We are frustrated by closed doors. The Cats Be Unemployed takes you through one Millennial’s topsy-turvy chase to find gainful employment after cat walking right into the Great Recession. Kristin’s twenties are spent precariously enduring unemployment five times within a six year span, while fighting through bait and switch scams, unreliable jobs and gig work, questionable policies, rocky relationships, and her own “quarter life crisis.” Through a collection of essays combining personal stories, extensive research, and humor, she examines the socioeconomic landscape this generation lives with, but has the potential to change. She provides insightful analysis on disconnects that surround education, health care, pay rates, company culture, and our perceptions versus realities of the working world. Join Kristin in an eye-opening discovery of the catalog of conundrums aspiring adults face after graduation. The Cats Be Unemployed reflects on and examines socioeconomic issues that aspiring adults encounter constantly: • Grievances and hilarities of being un(der)employed • Disconnects between education and the actualities of the workplace • Counterproductive company cultures • Scams that target the vulnerable • Company drug testing • Stagnating job growth, creation and pay rates • Effects on relationships when lost and broke • Health care options and dilemmas • Frustrations when working with recruiters • Kooky living situations • Coming of age with ever-changing technology and social media • The “Quarter Life Crisis”

Book excerpt: Experience the uplifting, "unforgettable" New York Times bestseller about an abandoned kitten named Dewey, whose life in a library won over a farming town and the world -- with over 2 million copies sold! (Booklist) Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. On the coldest night of the year in Spencer, Iowa, at only a few weeks old--a critical age for kittens--he was stuffed into the return book slot of the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most. As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming community slowly working its way back from the greatest crisis in its long history.

Book excerpt: A heartfelt, funny memoir about how a kitten rescue project changed one cynic’s life… Journalist Heather Green was finally putting down roots: in shiny, buzzing Manhattan. She loved her work and threw herself into sixty-hour weeks—once walking into a subway pole, getting a concussion, and still going to the office. Her new boyfriend Matt lived across the river in a New Jersey town that had none of the glamour of New York. She liked Matt—a lot—yet she wasn’t sure what to make of weekends in gritty, dilapidated Union City. But things changed the summer morning Heather discovered a beautiful stray cat and her three black-and-white kittens in Matt’s neighbor’s backyard. When she made eye contact with one of the kittens, she felt something she’d never felt before. She and Matt had to save the little animals. Because if they didn’t, who would? The crazy world of cat rescue soon drew Heather in. As she and Matt worked together to figure out how to trap, tame, and find homes for their foundlings, she began to question the life she had back in Manhattan. This is the story of how three furry beings taught one woman about love, community, and what truly matters in life.

Book excerpt: At a time when Don Holt's life was full of difficult problems to worry about and he endured many sleepless nights, he spent several hours each day praying, meditating, and writing in his journal. As he sat on the sofa writing, his cat, Katie, would join him, leap into his lap, rub against his pen, and sniff at his face. At first he was annoyed with this interruption of his important spiritual work. But one day she climbed onto his shoulder and went to sleep. It struck him that this was precisely the relationship he wished he had with God - that metaphorically he could just lay his head on the Divine Shoulder and get a good night's sleep. His collected reflections are presented in Praying with Katie, a profound commentary on the meaning of God, faith, and life.

She had the perfect man, the perfect job—hell, she had the perfect life—and there was no reason to think it wouldn't last. Or maybe there was, but Jen Lancaster was too busy being manicured, pedicured, highlighted, and generally adored to notice. This is the smart-mouthed, soul-searching story of a woman trying to figure out what happens next when she's gone from six figures to unemployment checks and she stops to reconsider some of the less-than-rosy attitudes and values she thought she'd never have to answer for when times were good. Filled with caustic wit and unusual insight, it's a rollicking read as speedy and unpredictable as the trajectory of a burst balloon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An extraordinarily informative scholarly history of the debate over working hours from 1920 to 1940." --New York Times Book Review For more than a century preceding the Great Depression, work hours were steadily reduced. Intellectuals, labor leaders, politicians, and workers saw this reduction in work as authentic progress and the resulting increase in leisure time as a cultural advance. Benjamin Hunnicutt examines the period from 1920 to 1940 during which the shorter hour movement ended and the drive for economic expansion through increased work took over. He traces the political, intellectual, and social dialogues that changed the American concept of progress from dreams of more leisure in which to pursue the higher things in life to an obsession with the importance of work and wage-earning. During the 1920s with the development of advertising, the "gospel of consumption" began to replace the goal of leisure time with a list of things to buy. Business, which increasingly viewed shorter hours as a threat to economic growth, persuaded the worker that more work brought more tangible rewards. The Great Depression shook the newly proclaimed gospel as well as everyone's faith in progress. Although work-sharing became a temporary solution to the shortage of jobs and massive unemployment, when faced with legislation that would limit the work week to thirty hours, Roosevelt and his New Deal advisors adopted the gospel of consumption's tests for progress and created more work by government action. The New Deal campaigned for the right to work a full time job--and won. "Work Without End presents a compelling history of the rise and fall of the 40-hour work week, explains bow Americans became trapped in a prison of work that allows little room for family, bobbies or civic participation and suggests bow they can free themselves from relentless overwork. [This book] is a sober reconsideration of a topic that is critical to America's future. It suggests that progress doesn't mean much if there is not time for love as well as work, and liberation is an empty achievement if the work it frees one to do is truly without end." --The Washington Post "Hunnicutt, with this excellent book, becomes the first United States historian to examine fully why this momentous change occurred." --The Journal of American History "Hunnicutt's achievement is to ask the questions, and to provide the first extended answer which takes in the full array of economic, social, and political forces behind the ‘end of shorter hours' in the crucial first half of the twentieth century." --Journal of Economic History "This thoroughly documented history [is] a valuable book well worth reading." --Libertarian Labor Review "This is an important book in the emerging debate about alternatives to full employment. Hunnicutt is a skilled historian who is on to an important issue, writes well, and can bring many different kinds of historical sources to bear on the problem." --Fred Block, University of Pennsylvania "Work Without End is a disturbing but impressive indictment of both big business and the New Deal program of Franklin D. Roosevelt.... Hunnicutt presents an unusual but persuasive description of a successful conspiracy to deprive American workers of their vision of a shorter-hours work week and the individual and societal liberation which would flow from it." --Labor Studies Journal
