It is starred with Pentecostal features, which seem rejected but are now gradually being recovered. It raises the questions of dialogue among Christians in Nigeria, particularly with the Pentecostals. The many healing ministries run by some Catholic priests are an open invitation to be understood and enculturated within Nigeria’s Catholic Christianity. It is a book to be reckoned with read with deep interests by students and teachers, and appreciated by Catholic and non-Catholics.
Book Synopsis A Time to Break Silence by : Joseph F. Mali
Download or read book A Time to Break Silence written by Joseph F. Mali and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Time to Break Silence, Joseph F. Mali argues that given the complexity of Nigeria as a multiethnic society, and in view of the volatile situation in the country, especially the relentless bloodshed in the northern region, there is an urgent need to amend the current process for selecting Catholic bishops in Nigeria. Presently episcopal appointments are the prerogative of the hierarchy and a few influential players. Nigerian Catholics, Mali maintains, are the best judge of their worsening situation. They deserve a chance to choose church leaders who can effectively tackle their social, political, and religious problems. Hence Mali calls on the Catholic bishops, priests, and laity to expand their views beyond the present method of nominating bishops and pave the way for all the clergy and laity to play a role in the selection process. This, according to Mali, is for the common good of the suffering church of Nigeria. Drawing on the New and the Old Testament, Mali explains the biblical foundation of the election of leaders by the people. Citing the good old saying, vox populi, vox Die (the voice of the people is the voice of God), and referring to Saint Augustine of Hippo, a distinguished African bishop who became a priest and a bishop by the will of the people, Mali concludes that Nigerian Catholics are capable of choosing priests who would make good bishops.

Book Synopsis The Bishop Wears No Drawers: A Former Catholic Missionary Priest Remembers Africa by : Michael Barrington

This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this spellbinding and riveting memoir, Barrington provides a brutally honest and gripping portrayal of his life as a young missionary priest. A racist alcoholic pastor nurses him through his first bout of malaria fever. Stood up to be shot by a group of drunken soldiers, a whiskey-drinking "John Wayne type" priest then shows real caring. Devastated by the death of a twelve years old school girl he was mentoring, he then has to bury her. Set during a pivotal period in the history of the Catholic church and bloody civil war in Nigeria, The Bishop Wears No Drawers is a true-to-life "survivor" tale replete with adrenaline-pumping adventures, daunting challenges and the added dimension of one priest's profound religious struggle to find his true self. Combined with warm humor, moving insights and personal testament Barrington offers an unfettered glimpse into the rarely entered domain and closed doors of the highest level of church management.
Book Synopsis The Institution of the Seminary and the Training of Catholic Priests in South-Eastern Nigeria (1885-1970) by : Angelo Chidi Unegbu
Download or read book The Institution of the Seminary and the Training of Catholic Priests in South-Eastern Nigeria (1885-1970) written by Angelo Chidi Unegbu and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, we can no longer hide under the pretence that the grace of God alone suffices to make one a good priest. A close study of the history of priestly formation has shown that not just the training of priests can ensure an authentic priest-product, rather a continuous effort to adapt the training to the current world situation so that priests would be in the position to discharge their duties effectively. Such readiness to adaptability should, of course, not lose sight of the meaning and function of the priest as revealed in the person of Jesus: a service to the world. In the bid to assess the models for the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria, the author using a historical-critical method traced the history of the models and events that shaped the current modules for the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria. At the end of the historical research, he proffered some suggestions for improvement, amendment and solidification of the training of priests in the area. As one of the younger African churches, the examination of the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria will also serve as a paradigm or typology for understanding the dynamics and the process of training of priests in other African countries, since most of these local churches share relatively similar historical, cultural, economic and socio-political circumstances.

Download or read book The Future of Catholic Priesthood in Igboland written by Cornelius Uche Okeke and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A well-researched work! Fr. Cornelius has put so much time, energy and skill into this book and it is my sincere wish that bishops, priests, formators, and seminarians get a copy of this book for both informative and formative study. I hope it will not just form part of our already bulky libraries but will be seriously and conscientiously read in view of formation towards transformation. A million thanks to the author for this soul-searching contribution towards an integrated formation for our seminarians in Igboland. If this challenge is taken seriously, the face of the priesthood in Igboland shall be renewed. Sr. Theresa Eke Clinical Psychologist & Formator, Daughters of Charity, Eleme, Portharcourt The Future of the Catholic Priesthood in Igboland: Dangers and Challenges Ahead is a compelling book on the problems of the Catholic priesthood. The book makes it clear that as in Europe and America, priests in Nigeria sometimes constitute a source of great worry to the Church. The main reasons for priestly misbehavior among Igbo priests are wrong motive, as well as deficient training. The book calls for purity of intention among aspirants to the priesthood. Only Jesus Christ's ideal of the priesthood as service is the true model. In it, Fr. Cornelius combines two apparently opposing styles of a bestseller and a research work. Let this book be read by all who want to see a drastic improvement in the quality of priests. Rev. Fr. Dr. Augustine Oburota Rector, Pope John Paul II Major Seminary, Okpuno, Awka
Book Synopsis The Relationship Hermeneutics in the Context of Pastoral and Catechesis - Locus for Dialogue with Culture in the Missio Ecclesiae by : Kingsley Anagolu
Download or read book The Relationship Hermeneutics in the Context of Pastoral and Catechesis - Locus for Dialogue with Culture in the Missio Ecclesiae written by Kingsley Anagolu and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authority-oriented pastoral/catechetical planning method, which characterizes the African mission transmission, has been problematic as it subtly neglects in its pedagogy the culture and daily life of the subject. Hence, the people operate a Christian/cultural double standard. This book proffers an alternative as the author makes the concept of the relationship hermeneutics model to a creative writing that aims towards an empirical application in the theology of inculturation, which is a subject-oriented and dialogical method that draws its strength from the incarnation prototype.
