Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral There are those to whom the characters in good fiction are far more real than the men and women whom we encounter in life: nor is this illusion confined to readers alone; it is shared by authors, who see in the children of their brain many of their own features, as their physical peculiarities are reproduced and at times exaggerated in their succeeding generations. To those who were fascinated by "En Route," Durtal, the hero, became living and true: we rejoice to meet him again, and recognize that his creator takes the same pride in his mental and spiritual development as a parent takes in those of his children, both when they repeat and differ from his own traits. In leaving Durtal at the close of "En Route," he stood at the parting of the ways, and it was uncertain whether he would drift back to his wallowing in the mire, or pursue the steep path of penance and virtue to the end. It is with a relief from tension and of satisfied hope that in "The Cathedral" are no signs of wavering, his change of life continues; he is occasionally wearied with the monotony of a provincial town; but he feels the hand of God is on him, turning his steps towards righteousness, his eyes and thoughts to mediaeval mysticism, to the rapt meditation of the cloister rather than to the more modern Catholicism which is ready to make a pact with the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral: A Novel Lady St. Leath asking him to dinner early next month; all these events were of too usual a nature to excite his triumph. No, there had descended upon him this afternoon that especial ecstasy that is surrendered once and again by the gods to men to lead them, maybe, into some especial blunder or to sharpen, for Olympian humour, the contrast of some swiftly approaching anguish. Brandon stood for a moment, his head raised, his chest out, his soul in flight, feeling the sharp sting of the raindrops upon his cheek; then, with a little breath of pleasure and happiness, he crossed the Green to the little dark door of Saint Margaret's Chapel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Building of a Cathedral This little book is sent forth in response to the ever-growing demand for more definite and detailed information concerning the Cathedral of ss. Peter and Paul in Washington. It has been a labour of love to write it; not only in grateful remembrance of those Cathedral workers in Washington, who have gone before us, but because the ideal of a cathedral, like its majestic watch tower, soars so high toward God and His Heaven above the crowded streets of the city and the noisy din of earthly life. And this ideal has been inspired by Christ Himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral in the American Church Having made this explanation, it may be right for him to state something of the way in which he has executed it. He has not indulged the least hesitancy in the freest use of what others have said. He has adopted their words when they have answered his pur pose, and their great names seemed to add authority to their Opinions; and he has appropriated their views when for any reason, such as brevity, he could not quote their language. He wishes here in this general way to disclaim all originality or pretense of it. At the same time, when the conditions of our country and generation have come into view he has expressed his own opinion with reference to them. Many matters which might well be given a place in a book on the subject have been passed over; others which might well be given a large place have been only touched upon. This has been necessary in the writer's view of the practical usefulness of the book. He has thought that next to such a book being written it was most desirable that it should be small. He hopes, however, that it may suggest to the interested reader more than is written out at length. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral: And Other Poems The Cathedral Against an evening sky of amethyst, Dim veiled in contemplation reverent, With sole intent to magnify the Lord, The bride of heaven on the bridegroom waits. Supreme the symbol! She doth wait, aware This too shall pass; - with calm gaze turned upon The far horizon of the last elect, Where flaming truth triumphant shall unite The paling ages of fidelity In one vast pleasure of the infinite. Above the plain she towers as the past; Before whose might the present is a babe; Nor hath the din of armies, clash of arms, Crusading legions or invading hordes, Thirst, pestilence or famine, love or hate, Avail, to swerve the prophet from the dream. Blood and oppression, peace and brotherhood Have sought the potent shadow of her arm; Within, - distracting wars of faith and doubt My rack her sore; - smiting the bold exterior Fierce storms of lashing hail and scourging wind Harass the valiant parapets in vain; While lightnings fork among the battled heights About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedral Pilgrimage To many minds both profound and cultured, to many natures that are both sensitive and appreciative, the English cathedrals make no special appeal. It is largely a matter of temperament. There are others to whom they have so much to say that it is overpowering. For them every stone has a voice, every aisle a message. The great, sombre towers bring them strength and healing; the soaring spires lift them above earth and its weariness into an atmosphere where all is peace. Destiny has forbidden to many such as these - true cathedral lovers - the delight of personal knowledge and intimacy. To bring to them the very faintest echo of this voice, this message, this breath of strength and healing and peace, is the sole object of this little book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shadow of the Cathedral: A Novel Sangre y Arena is a book of unexampled force and in that sort must be reckoned the greatest novel of the author, who has neglected no phase of his varied scene. The torrero's mortal disaster in the arena is no more important than the action behind the scenes where the gored horses have their dangling entrails sewed up by the primitive surgery of the place and are then ridden back into the amphitheatre to suffer a second agony. No color of the dreadful picture is spared; the whole thing passes as in the reader's presence before his sight and his other senses. The book is a masterpiece far in ad vance of that study of the common life which Ibaiiez calls La H orda; dealing with the horde of common poor and those accidents of beauty and talent as native to them as to the classes called the better. It has the attraction of the author's frank handling, and the power of the Spanish scene in which the action passes; but it could not hold me to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Visit the English Cathedrals The cathedral usually grew architecturally from age to age, or rose like a phoenix from the ashes of an earlier building. Not only is there built into a mediaeval cathedral the accumulated thought of all the men who had occupied themselves with building during the preceding centuries, but you have the dream and aspiration of the bishop, ah bot, or clergy for whom it was designed; the master mason's skilled construction; the work of the carver, the painter, the glazier, the host of men who, each in his own craft, knew all that had been done before them, and had spent their lives in struggling to surpass the works of their forefathers. It is more than this: there is not one shaft, one moulding, one carving, not one chisel-mark in such a building, that was not designed specially for the place where it is found, and which was not the best that the-experience of the age could invent for the purpose to which it is applied; nothing was borrowed; and nothing that was designed for one purpose was used for another. A thought or a motive peeps out through every joint; you may wander in such a building for weeks or for months together, and never know it all. Most English cathedrals are built in the form of a Latin cross, the arms of which are called the transepts. Over their point of intersection the central tower is usually erected. The part of the church running westward from this point to the entrance door is the nave and that running eastward to the high altar is the choir.
