Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catechism of John Hamilton: Archbishop of St. Andrews, 1552, Edited, With Introduction and Glossary A Quarter of a century ago, the Catechism of Archbishop I Hamilton was placed in my hands on the occasion of a visit to the Library of the University of Edinburgh, over which I had at the time the honour to preside in the office of Rector. I was at once struck with its great historical interest and importance, as a Manual issuing from the very highest authority of the National Church, intended to guide, or even to constitute, the teaching of every parish priest in the land, and exhibiting the shape in which it was desired to present religion to the people of Scotland, at a moment when in England Reformation was travelling at an unexampled pace. I ventured strongly to urge a fresh publication of the work; and a degree of connection between myself, and its modem presentations to the world may be taken as some apology for my presuming to prefix a few words to the admirable Introduction, supplied by the learning, care, and ability, of Mr. Law. It is natural to suppose that policy may not have been absent from the thoughts of those who, at so critical an epoch, fashioned the ideas and language of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catechism Set Forth by Archbishop Hamilton, Printed at Saint Andrews, 1551: Together With the Two-Penny Faith, 1559 The circumstances which led to the issuing of this Catechism and the purposes it was intended to serve, are set forth in the Canons of the Provincial Council of the Scottish Church, which met in Edinburgh on 26th January I 5 5 1 5 2. The only additional information we get regarding it is derived from the preface and con elusion of the book itself. The canonl informs us that the Council having before their eyes how the duty of preaching the word of God is commended to the pastors of the church by Jesus Christ the Prince of Pastors, and how important it was at that time that the flocks entrusted to their care should be well instructed, at least in the first rudiments of the Catholic faith, and con sidering that the inferior ecclesiastics and the prelates, for the most part, had not yet made such attainments in sacred learning as to be able by their own study to instruct the people in the Catholic faith and other things necessary to salvation - therefore they (the Council) statute and ordain that a certain book written in the common Scottish dialect, and after examination, approved by the wisest prelates, most learned divines, and other ecclesiastical persons present should be placed in the hands of the rectors, vicars, and curates, as well for their own instruction as for that of the Christian people.
