Book excerpt: This thesis described the development of new catalytic system for the conversion of natural gas (methane) to liquid products such as methanol and formaldehyde. This technology can allow the exploitation of small and medium size gas fields without the need to build an expensive gas to liquid plants or long pipelines. The technology is based on a concept of non-separating membrane reactor where an inorganic membrane paper serves as a catalyst support through which a reaction mixture is flowing under mild conditions and short residence times.

Book excerpt: In this study a catalyst that works at low temperature and atmospheric pressure for the oxidation of methane to methanol and formaldehyde was developed. Catalyst preparation was based on the fact that the higher activity and selectivity to the desired products obtained over supported catalysts, compared to bulk oxides, can be attributed to the formation of easily reducible supported metal oxide phases.

A cooling tube introduced coaxially inside a tubular membrane reactor quenches the product stream rapidly so that further oxidation of CH3OH is inhibited. Selectivity for CH3OH formation is significantly higher with quenching than in experiments without quenching. For CH4 conversion of 4% to 7% CH3OH selectivity is 40% to 50% with quenching and 25% to 35% without quenching.

Davy, in his attempt in 1817 to understand the science associated with the safety lamp he had invented a few years earlier, undertook a series of studies that led him to make the observation that a jet of gas, primarily methane, would cause a platinum wire to continue to glow even though the flame was extinguished and there was no visible flame. Dobereiner reported in 1823 the results of a similar investigation and observed that spongy platina would cause the ignition of a stream of hydrogen in air. Based on this observation Dobereiner invented the first lighter. His lighter employed hydrogen (generated from zinc and sulfuric acid) which passed over finely divided platinum and which ignited the gas. Thousands of these lighters were used over a number of years. Dobereiner refused to file a patent for his lighter, commenting that "I love science more than money." Davy thought the action of platinum was the result of heat while Dobereiner believed the ~ffect ~as a manifestation of electricity. Faraday became interested in the subject and published a paper on it in 1834; he concluded that the cause for this reaction was similar to other reactions.

Book excerpt: Objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a catalytic membrane reactor (ceramic membrane combined with catalyst) to selectively produce methanol by partial oxidation of methane. None of the membranes tested in a high pressure system could selectively remove methanol, until a cooling tube was inserted inside the membrane reactor to quench the product stream; this effectively increased methanol selectivity 2[times] during methane oxidation. For both conditions, combined selectivity for methanol and CO is constant, 85%. The remaining product is CO[sub 2]. The membranes were broken when removed from the system; this was remedied when a cooling tube with a smaller diameter was used.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a catalytic membrane reactor for the partial oxidation of methane. The specific goals are to demonstrate that we can improve product yield, demonstrate the optimal conditions for membrane reactor operation, determine the transport properties of the membrane, and provide demonstration of the process at the pilot plant scale. The last goal will be performed by Unocal, Inc., our industrial partner, upon successful completion of this study.

Book excerpt: The research focus, for the development of a radial flow catalytic membrane reactor for studying methane coupling, concentrated on understanding the effects of pore size, catalyst loading and catalyst distribution inside the membrane, on the hydrocarbon selectivity. The experimental results from the catalytic studies of oxidative coupling of methane in the radial flow membrane reactors are summarized in this report and the reactor performances of three radial flow reactors with pore sizes of 0.02[mu]m are interpreted by the energy dispersive X-ray digital mapping (EDX) technique. A conventional fixed bed catalytic reactor was set up and run under the same conditions as were used for the radial flow reactor studies. Two sources of samarium oxide catalysts were used in these experiments and their performances were compared in terms of C[sub 2] selectivity at same methane conversion. Compared to the monoclinic form of samarium oxide, the catalyst with cubic form was more active and selective for methane oxidative coupling. A general reactor model for oxidation reactions with distributed feed of oxygen and product removal strategies was proposed. Six types of feeding modes were analyzed and their feed distributions were optimized such that the desired product yields at the reactor outlet were maximized.

Book excerpt: This study reports the development of a new process to convert methane and carbon dioxide into syngas from non-oil resources. The process uses membrane catalytic systems (MCS) that support heterogeneous catalytic reactions in gaseous phase in membrane channels. An active surface of the catalysts formed inside the micro- channels is low in term of area, but it is characterized by a high value of the catalyst surface/volume ratio, which induces a high efficiency of heterogeneous catalysis. Such MCS, having 10⌃8 pores per cm2 of surface, can be considered as a set of nano reactors. MCS are formed from alkoxy derivatives and precursor metal complex containing between 0.008 and 0.055% by weight of nano- components mono-and bimetallic active distributed evenly in the channels. For systems La-Ce/Ni-Al and Pd-Mn/Ni-Al, productivities of 10500 and 7500 l/h∙dm3 were respectively obtained at 650°C with a composition of syngas H2/СО ranging from 0.63 to 1.25 and a conversion rate of 50% with a CH4/СО2 (1/1) feed. Thus MCS is an order of magnitude more efficient than a fixed bed reactor of the same catalyst. A catalytic synergy has been demonstrated for the system Pd-Mn.
