However, it never remains peaceful for long. In book one of the series, Don't Pay the Ferryman, a mysterious ferry owner comes to town, and shortly thereafter, a string of disappearances begin to occur. Local residents, Dave "Bucky" Morgan and Roger Fasick, decide to unite their efforts in investigating the bizarre happenings that have transpired since the ferry service entered their lives. In the second novel of the "Carthage Chronicles" trilogy, it seemed as though the town was becoming quiet and tranquil once again; unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Don't Fear the Reaper picks up the story five years later and finds the town experiencing a new threat in the form of destructive fires sweeping through the community as well as the appearance of a Grim Reaper-type individual. Before the town is completely destroyed, they must find out if the Reaper a ghost, a demon, or one of the local townspeople. Or worse yet, has the ferryman returned from the dead to wreak more havoc? The third installment of the series, Revenge of the Reaper, picks up right where the original Reaper story left off. After discovering that one of the townsfolk was the Reaper, a final battle ensued atop the historic Buckley Building, which resulted in the villain falling to his demise. However, three days after the felon's apparent death, his body disappears from the morgue and a ghostly Reaper has been spotted once again. As the death toll continues to rise, the town is left to wonder if the murderer has been resurrected from the dead to seek revenge, if the culprit is a copycat killer, or if the shadowy figure is the REAL Grim Reaper of Death - stalking the streets of Carthage to claim some souls for his own!

GAINES AWARD FOR LITERARY EXCELLENCE “With this splendid debut, Steven Wright announces his arrival as a major new voice in the world of political thrillers. I enjoyed it immensely.” —John Grisham A blistering and thrilling debut—a biting exploration of American politics, set in a small South Carolina town, about a political operative running a dark money campaign for his corporate clients Dre Ross has one more shot. Despite being a successful political consultant, his aggressive tactics have put him on thin ice with his boss, Mrs. Fitz, who plucked him from juvenile incarceration and mentored his career. She exiles him to the backwoods of South Carolina with $250,000 of dark money to introduce a ballot initiative on behalf of a mining company. The goal: to manipulate the locals into voting to sell their pristine public land to the highest bidder. Dre arrives in God-fearing, flag-waving Carthage County, with only Mrs. Fitz’s well-meaning yet naïve grandson Brendan as his team. Dre, an African-American outsider, can’t be the one to collect the signatures needed to get on the ballot. So he hires a blue-collar couple, Tyler Lee and his pious wife, Chalene, to act as the initiative’s public face. Under Dre’s cynical direction, a land grab is disguised as a righteous fight for faith and liberty. As lines are crossed and lives ruined, Dre’s increasingly cutthroat campaign threatens the very soul of Carthage County and perhaps the last remnants of his own humanity. A piercing portrait of our fragile democracy and one man’s unraveling, The Coyotes of Carthage paints a disturbingly real portrait of the American experiment in action.

Dave "Bucky" Morgan and Roger Fasick, two friends and lifelong residents, know something is very wrong in their town. Especially since a peculiar and mysterious man has opened a ferry service; a man with no past and questionable credentials. He travels with an attendant, a man of few words and chilling personality, who is just as mysterious as his mentor. Unable to understand the change in many of the townspeople's attitude, Bucky and Roger decide to investigate the bizarre happenings and disappearances that have been occurring since the ferry service entered their lives. For as peaceful as the ferry service may seem, be careful what you are agreeing to when you consent to pay the Ferryman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a boy at school, if I remember rightly, our sympathies were generally with the Carthaginians as against the Romans. Why they were so, except that one generally sympathizes with the unfortunate, I do not quite know; certainly we had but a hazy idea as to the merits of the struggle and knew but little of its events, for the Latin and Greek authors, which serve as the ordinary textbooks in schools, do not treat of the Punic wars. That it was a struggle for empire at first, and latterly one for existence on the part of Carthage, that Hannibal was a great and skilful general, that he defeated the Romans at Trebia, Lake Trasimenus, and Cannae, and all but took Rome, and that the Romans behaved with bad faith and great cruelty at the capture of Carthage, represents, I think, pretty nearly the sum total of our knowledge. I am sure I should have liked to know a great deal more about this struggle for the empire of the world, and as I think that most of you would also like to do so, I have chosen this subject for my story. Fortunately there is no lack of authentic material from which to glean the incidents of the struggle. Polybius visited all the passes of the Alps some forty years after the event, and conversed with tribesmen who had witnessed the passage of Hannibal, and there can be no doubt that his descriptions are far more accurate than those of Livy, who wrote somewhat later and had no personal knowledge of the affair. Numbers of books have been written as to the identity of the passes traversed by Hannibal. The whole of these have been discussed and summarized by Mr. W. J. Law, and as it appears to me that his arguments are quite conclusive I have adopted the line which he lays down as that followed by Hannibal. In regard to the general history of the expedition, and of the manners, customs, religion, and politics of Carthage, I have followed M. Hennebert in his most exhaustive and important work on the subject. I think that when you have read to the end you will perceive that although our sympathies may remain with Hannibal and the Carthaginians, it was nevertheless for the good of the world that Rome was the conqueror in the great struggle for empire. At the time the war began Carthage was already corrupt to the core, and although she might have enslaved many nations she would never have civilized them. Rome gave free institutions to the people she conquered, she subdued but she never enslaved them, but rather strove to plant her civilization among them and to raise them to her own level. Carthage, on the contrary, was from the first a cruel mistress to the people she conquered. Consequently while all the peoples of Italy rallied round Rome in the days of her distress, the tribes subject to Carthage rose in insurrection against her as soon as the presence of a Roman army gave them a hope of escape from their bondage. Had Carthage conquered Rome in the struggle she could never have extended her power over the known world as Rome afterwards did, but would have fallen to pieces again from the weakness of her institutions and the corruption of her people. Thus then, although we may feel sympathy for the failure and fate of the noble and chivalrous Hannibal himself, we cannot regret that Rome came out conqueror in the strife, and was left free to carry out her great work of civilization.

Book excerpt: From Lynne Gentry comes this e-short prequel to The Carthage Chronicles and her upcoming novel, Return to Exile, shedding light on the love story of Ruth and Caecilianus and the beginnings of the church in Carthage and their relationship with the young Roman noble, Cyprian. Before Dr. Lisbeth Hastings took her unexpected tumble into third-century Carthage and found herself amidst the persecuted church, future bishop Caecilianus, then a famous dyer of imperial purple, was visiting the tapestry shop in the low-rent district every Tuesday. It may have been a part of his duties as the deacon tasked to check upon the widows and their families, but deep down, he knew it was because of Ruth, the widow's lovely daughter who was so very determined to get the family back on their feet of her own accord. Can Caecilianus break through Ruth's single-minded focus to show her the freedom of surrender? Or will Ruth's dogged self-sufficiency push away the man who loves her?

Book excerpt: This epic retelling of the legendary Carthaginian military leader’s assault on the Roman empire begins in Ancient Spain, where Hannibal Barca sets out with tens of thousands of soldiers and 30 elephants. After conquering the Roman city of Saguntum, Hannibal wages his campaign through the outposts of the empire, shrewdly befriending peoples disillusioned by Rome and, with dazzling tactics, outwitting the opponents who believe the land route he has chosen is impossible. Yet Hannibal’s armies must take brutal losses as they pass through the Pyrenees mountains, forge the Rhone river, and make a winter crossing of the Alps before descending to the great tests at Cannae and Rome itself. David Anthony Durham draws a brilliant and complex Hannibal out of the scant historical record–sharp, sure-footed, as nimble among rivals as on the battlefield, yet one who misses his family and longs to see his son grow to manhood. Whether portraying the deliberations of a general or the calculations of a common soldier, vast multilayered scenes of battle or moments of introspection when loss seems imminent, Durham brings history alive.
