Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carolina Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 16: September, 1934 A few states and still more municipalities have recently enacted statutes or regulations that limit the sale of contraceptives to registered drug stores. The reason for debarring other retail establishments from such sales is based upon the assumption that pharmacists will not allow the promiscuous purchase of such items to any and everybody, but will exercise discretion and deny sales to those who obviously should not be permitted to use such devices. In such statutes and regulations an implicit trust is placed in pharmacists while the definite objective is to prevent promiscuity in sex relationships. The idea of increasing the sales volume of drug stores is in no way hooked up with the intention of the statute. If pharmacists do not live up to this trust, do not play the game squarely, then they will have failed in their obligations as responsible agents and will eventually be penalized out of all proportion to the profits that accrue from the indiscriminate sales of items that should be limited to legitimate users. As matters now stand certain contraceptives can be got from slot machines, filling stations, pool rooms, and wherenot. Other sorts are almost as conveniently purchased. This state of things is obviously a social menace which should be curbed and controlled. We have faith enough to believe that if the pharmacists of North Carolina were intrusted with the sole responsibility of selling contraceptives they would meet the obligation squarely. Hence we suggest that the Legislative Committee of the Association have such a measure formulated and introduced at the next meeting of the General Assembly. - J.G.B. Values in Dime and Standard Packages Recently Mr. J. Lester Hayman, Secretary of the West Virginia Pharmacy Association, directed a study of the comparative prices and values of ten-cent size and standard size packages of well known proprietary medicine and cosmetics for the purpose of ascertaining whether the purchaser gets more or less for his money in buying the ten-cent package as opposed to the standard package. Every item studied was purchased in Morgantown, W. Va., and exact methods were used to determine the amount of product in each size package. In every instance the standard, or larger, packages were given their regular resale prices. This is important to keep in mind because the comparative values would be different if "Aqua Velva," for example, is cut to 39c from its regular 50c price.
