Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Career of a Cobbler: The Life Story of William Carey A chattering monkey or two frisked overhead in the palm trees which skirted the village market-place, deserted now that the sun was setting. But to your eyes and mine the objects of conspicuous interest would have been two turbans, like gaudy tulips of gold and scarlet, nodding in the slow, unhurried conversation of the East, as their owners sat at the edge of the bazaar facing the sunset. "Now, concerning the white sahib, it is to be admitted that he died full of good works," agreed Chunder Singh with complacent indifference. "You must indeed admit it," said he of the golden-yellow turban, "although his death was as nothing compared to his life. I that speak unto you have made inquiries, and surely no hero in all India, no god in all our sacred books performed such deeds as his. Book excerpt: Many students complete their secondary schooling unsure of the career path they wish to pursue. Still very few complete post-secondary education knowing their chosen career path. Information to guide students on choosing their career paths is not readily available locally. The few career guidance showcases put on by the school system falls short of providing meaningful information for students. The importance of knowing at an early stage the pathway to a chosen career is invaluable as it saves time, worry, anxiety and financial resources. This is where Dawn French and her Careers series come in. Whether you are a parent, a student or someone looking to a new career, this series provides invaluable information on the common career pathways in Saint Lucia. The information presented is simple to understand and straight to the point. The series provides information on academic qualifications/skills requirements, educational institutions, scholarship/financial aid opportunities, an interview primer and potential employment opportunities. I encourage everyone interested in pursuing a career to get their hands on a copy of their chosen Career book. This little investment will pay off huge dividends in the long term as it will guide you in pursuing your chosen career.

Book excerpt: The man behind the iconic shoe brand recounts his rise to the top, struggle with addiction, time in prison, and ultimate recovery in this candid memoir. Everyone knows Steve Madden’s shoes, but few are familiar with the man behind the brand. Over the past thirty years, Madden has taken his eponymous shoe company from a fledgling startup he founded with a mere $1,100 to a global, multibillion-dollar enterprise. But Madden’s mistakes, from his battle with addiction to the financial shortcuts that landed him in prison, are as important to his story as his most iconic designs. In this raw, intimate, and ultimately inspiring book, Madden holds nothing back as he shares how he got where he is and the lessons he’s learned along the way. From his unconventional hiring strategies to his slavish devotion to product, Madden offers a business perspective that is as unique as his style. In The Cobbler, readers are treated to the wild ride though Madden’s meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and stunning comeback. But they will also walk away uplifted by a man who owns up to his mistakes, determined to give back and use his hard-won platform to create positive change.

Book excerpt: November 2015. As police and the national press investigated the 'missing millions' loaned by local government - for an unfinished stand - and the borough council understandably demanded their money back, things were looking bleak at Northampton Town Football Club. With staff unpaid and fans demanding answers in vain, HMRC's winding-up order threatened to send the club into administration or even oblivion. Against a backdrop more fitting for a soap opera, there emerged a unique, almost surreal story of solidarity and success. Five months later - shattering a host of club records in the process - the Cobblers were champions before any other League club had even sealed promotion. The Year of the Cobbler reflects upon life as a lower division football fan and, more specifically, a season which both nightmares and sweet dreams are made of... 'Forget Leicester - Northampton Town are English football's story of the season.' (The Sun)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many groups of Chinese who migrated from their ancestral homeland in the nineteenth century, none found a more favorable situation that those who came to Hawaii. Coming from South China, largely as laborers for sugar plantations and Chinese rice plantations but also as independent merchants and craftsmen, they arrived at a time when the tiny Polynesian kingdom was being drawn into an international economic, political, and cultural world. Sojourners and Settlers traces the waves of Chinese immigration, the plantation experience, and movement into urban occupations. Important for the migrants were their close ties with indigenous Hawaiians, hundreds establishing families with Hawaiian wives. Other migrants brought Chinese wives to the islands. Though many early Chinese families lived in the section of Honolulu called "Chinatown," this was never an exclusively Chinese place of residence, and under Hawaii's relatively open pattern of ethnic relations Chinese families rapidly became dispersed throughout Honolulu. Chinatown was, however, a nucleus for Chinese business, cultural, and organizational activities. More than two hundred organizations were formed by the migrants to provide mutual aid, to respond to discrimination under the monarchy and later under American laws, and to establish their status among other Chinese and Hawaii's multiethnic community. Professor Glick skillfully describes the organizational network in all its subtlety. He also examines the social apparatus of migrant existence: families, celebrations, newspapers, schools--in short, the way of life. Using a sociological framework, the author provides a fascinating account of the migrant settlers' transformation from villagers bound by ancestral clan and tradition into participants in a mobile, largely Westernized social order.
