Book excerpt: Based upon Bandura's (1977) concept of self-efficacy expectations, Taylor and Betz (1983) constructed the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CDMSE) to measure self-efficacy expectations related to 50 career decision-making tasks. They hypothesized that individuals with low self-efficacy would avoid tasks necessary to make career decisions and those with high self-efficacy would approach tasks. The current study was designed to examine the construct and concurrent validity of the CDMSE Scale (Taylor & Betz, 1983) adapted to include the variable salience. One purpose of the study was to evaluate the factor structure of the scale. It had previously failed to differentiate between the five career choice competencies (cited in Crites, 1978) upon which its subscales were based. The second purpose was to examine the ability of the items to differentiate between students who were decided or undecided on a major, and those who sought career planning assistance or did not. A sample of 140 freshmen and sophomore university students were administered the CDMSE scale adapted, and demographic questionnaires that included questions related to their degree of decidedness on a major. Factor analysis failed to confirm the five postulated subscales. Results confirmed previous research findings that higher levels of CDMSE are negatively related to vocational indecision, and found the CDMSE scale total and individual items are able to differentiate between decided and undecided students. Perceived salience of the tasks was not found to be significant. These findings suggest that the CDMSE scale is a valid instrument to use in assessment of vocational indecision. It can also provide the basis for evaluating and planning specific career interventions.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between family functioning and career decision-making self-efficacy among first year Malaysian undergraduate students at the University of Malaya during the 2005/2006 academic session. The study also examined the relative contributions of family functioning to the prediction of career decision-making self-efficacy. Finally, the study investigated whether there are differences in family functioning and career decision-making self-efficacy among students by gender, ethnicity, and academic majors. A final sample consisting of 925 participants was selected through a modified, stratified random sampling. The instruments used in the study are a demographic information sheet, the Malay Version of the Family Assessment Device (FAD), and the Malay version of the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale Short-Form (CDSE-SF). Pearson product-moment correlation was used to assess the degree of relationship between family functioning subscales (i.e., problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control, and general functioning) and career decision-making self-efficacy subscales (i.e., self-appraisal, occupational information, goal selection, career planning, and problem solving). Simultaneous multiple regression analysis was used to assess the relative effects of family functioning subscales on career decision-making self-efficacy. Two-Way Analyses of Variance were used to determine differences in family functioning and career decision-making self-efficacy among students by gender, academic major, and ethnicity. The findings of the study show that the relationships between family functioning subscales and career decision-making self-efficacy subscales were between small and moderate. The study also found that each family functioning subscale contributed less than 15% of the variance in career decision-making self-efficacy. The total variance accounted for by the six family functioning subscales was small (32%). Important findings of the analyses of variances include: (a) male students perceived their families as more dysfunctional than female students; (b) Chinese students perceived their families as more dysfunctional than Malay and Indian students; (c) students in science majors perceived their families as more dysfunctional than students in art and social science majors; (d) there were significant interaction effects between gender and ethnicity on career decision-making self-efficacy; and (e) there were significant interaction effects between academic major and ethnicity on career decision-making self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The researcher examined the effect of a System of Interactive Guidance and Information (SIGI PLUS) on career decision making and career decision making self-efficacy in freshman male athletes and non-athletes. Thirty freshman male athletes and thirty non-athletes were recruited from Springfield College, Sprinfield, Massachusetts. The subjects were randomly placed in one of two groups: 15 freshman male athletes and 15 non-athletes in the control group (without SIGI PLUS), and 15 freshman male athletes and 15 non-athletes in the experimental group (with SIGI PLUS). All subjects received the Career Decision Scale and The Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy Scale. Results of this study failed to support the hypothesis that SIGI PLUS would have a greater effect on freshman male athletes than the non-athletes. However, SIGI PLUS did have an effect on athletic status in the career decision making group. Freshman male non-athletes had a better score after using SIGI PLUS than the freshman male athletes. A significant effect was also found in the career decision making self-efficacy group.
