Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Art. Sculpture. With commentary by Jon Wood. In 1972, artist Garth Evans welcomed the opportunity to create a public sculpture in Cardiff, Wales, as part of the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation's City Sculpture Project. Concerned that the increasing demand for his work served only to reinforce the political, social, and economic status quos, Evans hoped to unsettle this dynamic by making a sculpture that would connect with an audience outside of the art world. The morning after the installation of his sculpture, Evans recorded the responses of passersby. The Beckettian transcript of the Cardiff interviews is presented here, framed by Evans's introduction and reflection. Art historian Jon Wood contextualizes THE CARDIFF TAPES within contemporaneous debates about sculpture and public space. These writings explore ideas about the social responsibilities of art and artists, and make a cogent argument for the value of "difficulty" in sculpture.

Book excerpt: "In 1972, artist Garth Evans installed a public sculpture in Cardiff, Wales, for six months as part of the UK-wide City Sculpture Project. The next morning, he stood beside the sculpture and recorded responses to it from passersby. After being reminded decades later of the long-since forgotten tapes, he published the transcript of these responses in 2015, and he was curious: how would people respond to the sculpture in the present, nearly 45 years after its original presentation? He set out on a mission to return the work to the same location in Cardiff in order to make a second recording, and in 2019, he succeeded in doing both. Yet, while he had taken pains to replicate the making of the transcript in exactly the same manner as in 1972, everything else had changed-from cultural understandings about contemporary art; to the sculpture's physical context; to the passersby, the artist, and the work itself. The Cardiff Tapes (2019) presents the transcript of responses to the reinstalled sculpture, along with Evans' reflections on the experiment and art historian Ann Compton's discussion of the issues around the redisplay and the task of contextualizing it within public art practice since 1972. Raising questions about artistic success and failure, this book asks what the stakes are in artistic re-dos and whether they are ever really possible"--

Book excerpt: Once confined solely to literature and film, science fiction has emerged to become a firmly established, and wildly popular, television genre over the last half century. The Essential Science Fiction Television Reader provides insight into and analyses of the most important programs in the history of the genre and explores the breadth of science fiction programming. Editor J. P. Telotte and the contributors explain the gradual transformation of the genre from low-budget cinematic knockoffs to an independent and distinct televisual identity. Their essays track the dramatic evolution of early hits such as The Twilight Zone and Star Trek into the science fiction programming of today with its more recent successes such as Lost and Heroes. They highlight the history, narrative approaches, and themes of the genre with an inviting and accessible style. In essays that are as varied as the shows themselves, the contributors address the full scope of the genre. In his essay "The Politics of Star Trek: The Original Series," M. Keith Booker examines the ways in which Star Trek promoted cultural diversity and commented on the pioneering attitude of the American West. Susan George takes on the refurbished Battlestar Galactica series, examining how the show reframes questions of gender. Other essays explore the very attributes that constitute science fiction television: David Lavery's essay "The Island's Greatest Mystery: Is Lost Science Fiction?"calls into question the defining characteristics of the genre. From anime to action, every form of science fiction television is given thoughtful analysis enriched with historical perspective. Placing the genre in a broad context, The Essential Science Fiction Television Reader outlines where the genre has been, where it is today, and where it may travel in the future. No longer relegated to the periphery of television, science fiction now commands a viewership vast enough to sustain a cable channel devoted to the genre.

Book excerpt: Details of every UK release on the Purple Records label from 1971 to 1978 with full colour, high quality photography throughout of labels, sleeves and inserts along with detailed analysis and identification of the crucial 1st pressing details of every album and single. Essential reading for collectors of Purple Records. Following in the footsteps of Frank Zappa, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple's entrepreneurial management team founded the band's own 'vanity' record label in 1971. The brainchild of Tony Edwards and John Coletta, and, along with additional Purple companies, served to control virtually every business and financial aspect of Deep Purple's musical output, including management, promotion, publishing and of course recording. The label signed a diverse range of additional artists with an eclectic mix of styles, some of which would seem to be incongruous with Deep Purple's own 'hard rock' genre. The most comprehensively detailed book on the Purple Records label.

Bringing into mutual proximity the ecological, public health, political, and spiritual crises that came to the fore in 2020, this book considers these compounding events and how they impact one another and asks with critical optimism what can happen in this moment of transition.

Book excerpt: Prepare yourself. This true story strains the limits of human understanding.'Souls Speak' details the astonishing paranormal investigation into the fate of three boys believed lost in the vast caves beneath historic Hannibal, Missouri. A year-long investigation involving three evidential clairvoyants independently identified the boys as the earliest victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, many years before the madman's 1972-1978 Chicago murder spree claimed the lives of thirty-three young men and boys. The boys vanished on May 10, 1967 and their disappearance sparked the largest cave search in US history, the topic of Wingate's previous book, "Lost Boys of Hannibal." It had been believed the boys were victims of a cave collapse, but the astounding preternatural probe documented in "Souls Speak" brings into question the long-believed cause of their disappearances, and asks where their bodies might eventually be found.
