Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Canadian Question Where the subject is so complex and so disjointed, to devise a satisfactory arrangement is not easy. Writers and readers of the history of the Dominion too well know how wanting it is in unity. For the special purpose of this work, which is neither elaborate description nor detailed history, but the presentation of a case and of a problem, it seemed best first, briefly to delineate the Provinces, which are the factors of the case, then to sketch their political history, leading up to Confederation, then to give an account of the Confederation itself, with its political sequel, up to the present time, and finally to propound the problem. The general reader, if any one answering to that description ever takes up this work, may skip the chapter on the Federal polity, the subject of which to the reader specially interested in Colonial institutions will probably seem the most important of all. To impart anything like liveliness to a discussion of the British North America Act one must have the touch of Voltaire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summary of Canadian History: With Questions Adapted to Each Paragraph Many histories of Canada have been written, but there is not one which, while comprehending in brief space the story of our three historic centuries, is not either confused and fragmentary in arrangement, or disfigured by gross blunders; while some are remarkable for a union of both defects. To supply a deficiency, therefore, the present little summary has been written. It aims at giving, in small compass, a full as well as accurate and connected relation of the chief incidents pertaining to Canadian History, from the time of Cartier's discovery to the present day. Many omissions have been supplied, many superfluities retrenched, many errors corrected, which deform popular text-books on this subject. The general arrangement adopted is that which has been naturally suggested by the progress of events. The questions appended to each chapter will be found available in the schoolroom. It is hoped that a book has thus been produced which will mainly serve for the instruction of Canadian youth in their country's history, and may be useful also as a manual of reference to all classes of readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disallowance The Disallowance Question, as it is popularly called, cannot be treated by Parliament as a party question. Whatever ardent politicians may desire, the people of Canada decline to range themselves in party attitude on a question of such moment to the commercial future of the country; and the will of the people may be expected to find suitable expression in a Canadian Parliament. The question before the people of Canada to-day is a simple but a momentous one. Not since the foundations of our Confederation were laid have graver issues been presented for final settlement. Seldom in our history as a people are we likely to be called upon to deal with a question bearing so intimately and so seriously upon our commercial and political future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Canadian Questions: Studies in Preparation for the First Canadian National Student Conference, December 28th-January 2nd, 1923 Those of us who have worked together in the Student Chris tian Movement have great faith in a corporate and fearless search for truth undertaken in all humility and devotion by ordinary peo ple who will dare to act on their discoveries. We believe that the Kingdom of God can only be discovered through such search. We aim in this conference at an examination of phases of Canadian life that we may see where lies their strength and their weakness and may gain more light on how the Spirit of Christ may dominate that life and how Canada may join with other peoples in the universal fellowship of the Kingdom of God. The responsibility for this conference as for all else in the Student Christian Movement rests on the members. Its value will depend on preparation and results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen's and Canada Co-education, so far as university life in Canada is con cerned, began in Queen's. Women were admitted, to begin with, to the Faculty of Arts. The question then arose why they should not be allowed to study Medicine. The thing had not hitherto been done in Canada, but it was done here. The very novelty of the scheme attracted a singularly able group of women. There were, however, difficulties not a few in the carry ing on of a medical school for men and women where the schoolitself was small. Consequently, when the University of Toronto opened the doors of its medical faculty to women, Queen's decided to restrict its work in this field to men. The Extra-mural system, which has been of such benefit to teachers throughout the Dominion, began almost by accident. Students with the long summer vacation before them used to ask their professors for guidance in their reading. Gradually this counsel came to be increasingly important till the question arose, as to whether credit might not be given for such reading provided the student possessed the necessary academic require ments for entering upon a course of university study, followed the University curriculum in his reading, and passed the same examinations as the student attending the classes in Queen's. The idea was not in itself new. London University had shown the Way. But the conditions in Canada made the problem largely new, and the regulations governing it have been modified con siderably as the result of the long years of trial. The system, however, has been of the greatest value to the Dominion. Every where one meets men in high positions in the educational world who received their opportunity through the Extra-mural system.
