Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Drawing Course: Elementary Freehand, Object, Constructive and Perspective Drawing A new subject is now introduced, that of Elementary Perspective, treated in the simplest manner and applied to the drawing of single objects. In the lessons on constructive and model drawing the pupils have been taught to represent objects by drawing one side at a time, making a separate drawing for each side that required to be shown. Such representation is called geometrical, and is necessarily used in all plans, or drawings made to a scale, from which measurements are to be taken. Usually, however, in looking at anything we see more than one side, and we observe that its apparent form changes with every change of position. An object drawn thus, not as it actually is, but as it appears to the eye, is said to be drawn in perspective. In Book 3, page 4, geometrical views are taken of the side, back, and end of a book, these three views being required by the geometrical method to represent its form. One perspective drawing, as illustrated on page 8, will give even a clearer idea of the appearance of the book, but will not give its size, nor the measurement of its parts. The same principle is illustrated by the perspective views of a chest on the same page and of a table on page 18, which are geometrically represented by two and three views, respectively, in Book 3, pages 3 and 10. The fundamental principles of perspective are I. An object appears to become smaller as it recedes from the eye of the spectator. 2. An object, other than a spherical one, changes its apparent form with every change of position. I. A man, a waggon, a boat, or a railway train, moving away from us appears to become smaller and smaller until we lose sight of it. The same objects in coming towards us appear larger as they approach. Book Synopsis From Drawing to Visual Culture by : Harold Pearse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Drawing to Visual Culture takes a sweeping view of the role of visual art in Canadian education, from its roots as industrial drawing in the early nineteenth century to its important but often ambiguous position in contemporary schools. Art education and cultural history scholars consider practices in public schools, post-secondary schools, and non-school settings. The essays, many illustrated, range from focused surveys of particular eras or regions, to theoretically based analyses of movements or trends, to case studies that examine art education theory and practice in specific times and places. Contributors show that the nature and character of art education in Canada reflects the influence of ideas and practices in art and education and their interaction with various aspects of culture, language, religion, government, and geography. Contributors include F. Graeme Chalmers (British Columbia), Roger Clark (Western Ontario), Robert Dalton (Victoria), Suzanne Lemerise (Quebec à Montreal), E. Lisa Panayotidis (Calgary), Leah Sherman (Concordia), J. Craig Stirling (independent scholar and researcher, Montreal), Wendy Stephenson (PhD candidate, British Columbia), William Zuk (Manitoba).

Book Synopsis Beginning Drawing Atelier by : Juliette Aristides
Download or read book Beginning Drawing Atelier written by Juliette Aristides and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a well-known artist and best-selling art-instruction author with almost rock-star popularity in the contemporary world of representational art, Beginning Drawing Atelier, with its unique workbook/sketchbook approach, and high-quality paper, offers a comprehensive and contemporary twist on traditional Atelier art instruction practices. Atelier education is centered on the belief that working in a studio, not sitting in the lecture hall, is the best place to learn about art. Every artist needs to learn basic drawing skills. In this elegant and inspiring workbook, master contemporary artist and best selling author Juliette Aristides breaks down the drawing process into small, manageable lessons; presents them progressively; introduces time-tested principles and techniques in the Atelier tradition that are easily accessible; and shares the language and context necessary to understand the artistic process and create superior, well-crafted drawings. What makes this approach unique is the fact that it includes blank pages for copying and practicing within each lesson, facilitating traditional Atelier methods. Ateliers have produced the greatest artists of all time--and now that educational model is experiencing a renaissance. These studios, in a return to classical art training, are based on the nineteenth-century model of teaching artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. Students begin by copying masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. Beginning Drawing Atelier is like having an atelier in a book--and the master is Juliette Aristides, a classically trained artist. On every page, Aristides uses the works of Old Masters and today's most respected realist artists to demonstrate and teach the principles of realist drawing and painting, taking students step by step through the learning curve yet allowing them to work at their own pace. Unique and inspiring, the approach in this new book offers serious art courses for serious art students.
