To these latter I have been permitted access, and have received invaluable assistance in examining them from the editor, Sir John Laughton. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign of Trafalgar, Vol. 2 of 2 Ever since Napoleon had realised with reluctant con viction that to pass his army across the Channel by stealth or its own force was impossible, he had been exhausting his strategical ingenuity to secure the temporary command. He had run the gamut of every device his predecessors had ever tried. No trick or compelling movement had been neglected to dissipate the force that barred his way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign of Trafalgar, Vol. 1 of 2: With Crafts and Diagrams Of these charts, which have now been constructed for the first time, and which are the necessary basis of all strategical criticism, it must be explained that they should not be taken as absolutely correct. Except where otherwise indicated the tracks are simply plotted between noon positions, and owing to the uncertainty of longitude observations, even these posi tions are sometimes only approximate. This is especially the case with the smaller cruisers, whose neglected movements are not infrequently vital to a correct view of fleet operations, such as Orde's retreat from Cadiz and Nelson's final decision to chase to the West Indies. In the important case, for instance, of the Iris, which observed Villeneuve's final movement from Ferrol, no one on board seems to have been able to work out a longitude at all. At least none are entered in her master's log, and m running down from Ushant she made Cape Pefias instead of Ortegal, nearly a hundred miles to the westward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Year of Trafalgar: Being an Account of the Battle and of the Events Which Led Up to It, With a Collection of the Poems and Ballads Written Thereupon Between 1805 and 1905 The Naval Campaign of 1805 has never yet been made the subject of a separate study in book form. This fact, however noticeable, does not, of course, prove the need for any fresh work of the kind. There are many Lives of Nelson and other historical books in which the Battle of Trafalgar and the events that led up to it fill a certain space and form an important element. If a new history is required, it will probably be supplied several times over during the present year by professional or well-qualified writers. The excuse for the appearance of the present little volume is that it aims at giving to the public something which is not very likely to be offered by anyone else, because it is the direct outcome of a personal point of view. There are some to whom Trafalgar is one of the ever-present scenes of the past, one of the worlds most poignant dramas, and Nelson a name of magic sound, a star of the first magnitude, that rose upon the earliest twilight of youth, and will burn until the dawn that puts all stars and candles out. This is, no doubt, a matter of temperament, but the temperament is not un-English and not uncommon among us: to foster it would be no small service to the Navy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Enemy at Trafalgar: An Account of the Battle From Eye-Witnesses' Narratives and Letters and Despatches From the French and Spanish Fleets We have all heard of what happened on our own side, and of the heroism that so many of our officers and men displayed. The incidents of Trafalgar on the enemy's side offer a situation that will be new to most of us, and should prove interesting, particularly at the present time. There were many fine fellows in the franco-spanish Fleet on the 2lst of October, 1805, and they did their duty to the utmost of their power. We, for our part, had Nelson, the greatest sailor since the world began, to lead us; our captains had wider experience, and our sailors were better trained at the guns than those opposed to them: that made the deciding difference to the fate of the day. This should be remembered. At Trafalgar the antagonists were hardly a match, in spite of the fact that the Combined Fleet counted six ships more than the British. The enemy were in no condition to give battle, as they themselves knew well and said before they put to sea. The Com bined Fleet was made up from two navies, each trained in its own way, and differing markedly in efficiency; belonging also to nationalities hardly at one in political sympathy. The Combined Franco Spanish Fleet sailed to fight a decisive battle with their ships for the most part inefficiently equipped. When we look at military history, we find that it contains a rich store of precedents which show most clearly what should be done and what should be avoided to attain success in war. Napoleon inculcated the study of history, and rightly so, for it is on the wealth Of precedents, the experience Of the past, that the education of all officers should be based. Book excerpt: Of the many campaigns in the long history of Britain, naval and otherwise, there have been few more momentous than the campaign in the Mediterranean in 1804-5 culminating in the battle of Trafalgar. They spawned a national hero in the figure of heroic lord Nelson, one-armed and blind in one eye, dying at the moment of his greatest victory over a more numerous enemy. However, the story of the battle, much less the campaign, was more complex than the story of one man, however great. It is this web of sailings, counter-sailings, orders, alliances, courage and genius that Corbett elucidates with his great naval knowledge and lucid text. Sir Julian Corbett wrote this most important of studies, drawing on not only his comprehensive archive material at the Royal Naval college, but also important sources from French and Spanish sources. He was a prolific author and authority on British warfare, and more particularly the naval aspects, as well as a lecturer in history to the Royal Naval College. Author — Sir Julian Stafford Corbett, LLM. (1854-1922) Illustrations – 5 maps and plans.
