His best friend Keenan has been bugging him about it all year. "Since I was a little kid, I look forward to it all year! It's great! Don't even worry about the bears!" But Quinn was worried about the bears and all the animals with big teeth, like wolves. And what about all the bugs? What about being a new boy trying to fit in? What about girls, who might talk you into doing things that you've never done before! "Are you really saying you've never water-skied before? Or ridden a horse?" It's all part of The Camp Crowfeather Mystery! Why are these weird things happening? Are those really wolf legs? What happened to the scrambled eggs? Are there really giant squids in the lake? Quinn and the kids have got to do something! It's going to get exciting at The Camp Crowfeather Mystery!

This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War] “Eyewitness account of the fighting during the Crimean War. “While I was delivering the order, a round shot passed through my horse, close to the saddle, and rolled us over; while on the ground another canon shot passed through him. A sergeant of artillery ran to extricate me; he had just lifted from under the horse, and I was in the act of steadying myself on his shoulder, when a shot carried off his thigh and he fell back on me....This is a scene describes a narrow escape for Hamley during the bloody battle of Inkerman. The author of this remarkable book, a Gunner officer, served on the Artillery Staff, first as Adjutant to the First Division field artillery and then as ADC to the Commander Royal Artillery throughout the siege of Sevastopol, and as such he was well placed to make this record of the campaign. As he says in the introduction it was not his intention to indulge in fanciful rhetoric but to give a ‘round, unvarnished tale.' All was written in camp when he was off duty, in a tent or in a hut, and his descriptions of the fighting and the aftermath paint a grim and often gruesome picture. Disease and sickness ravaged the army; in Dec. 1854 and Jan. 1855 the sick returns amounted to 14,000. The pictures he paints, in his matter-of-fact narrative, reflect some appalling sights of the dead and dying on the battlefields. He takes us through the Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava to the fall of Sevastopol in Sep. 1855 which was the prelude to the peace talks a few months later. The siege of Sevastopol lasted a year and cost the British some 11,000 casualties, the French 12,000 and the Russians 50,000. There are some very good illustrations by the author himself. For the students of this dreadfully mishandled war (administration, logistics and medical) this book will be compulsive reading.”-Print Ed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you were a Confederate prisoner during the Civil War, you might have ended up in this infamous military prison in Chicago. More Confederate soldiers died in Chicago's Camp Douglas than on any Civil War battlefield. Originally constructed in 1861 to train forty thousand Union soldiers from the northern third of Illinois, it was converted to a prison camp in 1862. Nearly thirty thousand Confederate prisoners were housed there until it was shut down in 1865. Today, the history of the camp ranges from unknown to deeply misunderstood. David Keller offers a modern perspective of Camp Douglas and a key piece of scholarship in reckoning with the legacy of other military prisons.

Book excerpt: A Study of Army Camp Life is a description of the lives of soldiers in their camps during the American Revolution using primary documents such as letters, journals, and orderly books from soldiers and orderlies. Excerpt: "The war was on, the Lexington and Concord fray was over, Paul Revere had made his memorable ride, and the young patriots with enthusiasm at white heat were swarming from village and countryside leaving their work and homes. Where they were going they did not know, they were going to fight with little thought of where they were to live or what they were to eat and wear."

Book excerpt: From barrios and labor camps spring life and inspiration. The Red Camp weaves a deeply humane and moving tapestry of coming of age and of the mundane and ugly transformed into the beauty of feminine self-discovery. Amid the poverty, exploitation and discrimination, families set down roots, send children to school and raise them to become better ñAmericans,î all in the hopes of providing a better life. Evoking a location at the margins of both established society and our imagination, the Red Camp„once a labor camp, then a shanty town for migrant workers, and finally a barrio„is to Latino immigrants and laborers what New York tenements were to earlier generations. Debra Diaz has poetically recreated for us the life of one family struggling under the red roof of its shanty. The women of the Cruz family spin mesmerizing tales of hope, life, and inspiration. They describe the exquisite tension of male-female relationships, the sweet discovery of love, the high expectations and bitter disillusionment that husbands, wives, parents and children bear for each other, and the difficulties of life among a group of people caught between two cultures. In this richly textured and enchanting narrative, the voices of the Cruz family join in chorus to remember their trials and triumphs in the Red Camp. Hear the passionate music of an anniversary waltz, the haunting tale of a lost soul who murders her children and the call to a better life which in the end may not be as good as the family life shared in the Red Camp.

Book excerpt: As a fourteen-year-old Jewish boy who had rarely ventured outside his small, remote village, Moyshe Rekhtman may seem an unlikely escape artist. But his iron will and quick wit allowed him to survive when all seemed lost. Staging escapes from death camps and avoiding Nazi pursuit through the frozen Ukrainian countryside-all while facing the loss of his family, famine, constant threat of capture, torture, and execution - would be a monumental task for the strongest of men. Despite his mild manners, emaciated body, and poor vision, he evaded the death squads in Nazi-occupied Ukraine for four years. Moyshe's Holocaust memoir is a remarkable example of human fortitude during a time when many welcomed an end to their suffering.
