Book excerpt: The need for long-term energy sources, in particular for our highly technological society, has become increasingly apparent during the last decade. One of these sources, of tremendous poten tial importance, is controlled thermonuclear fusion. The goal of controlled thermonuclear fusion research is to produce a high-temperature, completely ionized plasma in which the nuclei of two hydrogen isotopes, deuterium and tritium, undergo enough fusion reactions so that the nuclear energy released by these fusion reactions can be transformed into heat and electricity with an overall gain in energy. This requires average kinetic energies for the nuclei of the order of 10 keV, corresponding to temperatures of about 100 million degrees. Moreover, the plasma must remain confined for a certain time interval, during which sufficient energy must be produced to heat the plasma, overcome the energy losses and supply heat to the power station. At present, two main approaches are being investigated to achieve these objectives: magnetic confinement and inertial con finement. In magnetic confinement research, a low-density plasma is heated by electric currents, assisted by additional heating methods such as radio-frequency heating or neutral beam injection, and the confinement is achieved by using various magnetic field configurations. Examples of these are the plasmas produced in stellarator and tokamak devices.

Book excerpt: The first Born approximation with both the proton-proton and proton-electron interaction is used to calculate the high energy electron capture cross section. It is shown that the high energy proton-nucleus amplitude has a dominant peak for backward scattering (centre-of-mass system). As a consequence of this peak, if the protons are treated as distinguishable particles, the cross section depends upon the impact energy E as E(3- ) in contrast to the commonly accepted E(6- ) dependence. When the protons are treated as indistinguishable particles, the electron capture cross section is not defined at sufficiently high energies. This same cross section is also calculated using the distorted wave approximation as developed by Bassel and Gerjuoy in 1960. It is shown that the proton-nucleus amplitude is only cancelled in the forward direction, and consequently the electron capture cross section is again not defined at high energies. (Author).

Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years significant progress has been made in calculating the vast amounts of relativistic atomic data that are required to model heavy element, non-LTE plasmas. A number of the relevant processes, including electron-impact excitation, photoionization, autoionization and electron-impact ionization, involve the computation of continuum electron wavefunctions. If the plasma consists of ions with sufficiently high charge, then the distorted-wave approximation is valid and can be used to compute these continuum orbitals and the corresponding cross sections. An overview of the relativistic distorted-wave approach is provided with an aim toward underscoring the similarities and differences with the longer established, nonrelativistic and semi-relativistic approaches. An example for extending the distorted-wave approach to less highly charged systems via the inclusion of resonance contributions to the cross sections is provided. Related topics, such as the top-up contribution, the high energy (Bethe) cross section limit, the Breit and Moller interactions, and transitions among magnetic sublevels are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The rapid relativistic distorted wave method of Zhang et al for excitation, which uses the atomic structure data of Sampson et al, has been extended to ionization. In this approach the same Dirac-Fock-Slater potential evaluated using a single mean configuration is used in calculating the orbitals of all electrons bound and free. Values for the cross sections Q for ionization of various ions have been calculated and generally good agreement is obtained with other recent relativistic calculations. When results are expressed in terms of the reduced ionization cross section Q{sub R}, which is proportional to I2Q, they are close to the non-relativistic Coulomb-Born-Exchange values of Moores et al for hydrogenic ions except for high Z and/or high energies. This suggests that fits of the Q{sub R} to simple functions of the impact electron energy in threshold units with coefficients that are quite slowly varying functions of an effective Z can probably be made. This would be convenient for plasma modeling applications. 24 refs., 2 tabs.
